He’s handsome. He’s fluffy. He’s sassy. He’s cuddly. He’s Reid!!
Reid is a man with a plan and will accept nothing less than prefect. You want to sweep the floor? Reid wants attention. You want to work on your computer? Reid wants attention. You want to touch his belly? You better think again.
This fluffy boy is looking for a home and a family to rule over. In his kingdom, Reid would like no other four legged friends and would appreciate no young two legged friends. He likes things chill but will make sure that you never forget that he is around and does indeed have you wrapped around his finger. Stop by 3505 Mills Civic Parkway in West Des Moines anytime we are open to get the chance to see Reid in all of his glory. Our hours are 2-8 on the weekdays and 11-5 on the weekends.
We are happy to announce that Casey has been adopted and is enjoying his new home! Thank you for everyone who has been supporting him and giving him well wishes. It worked and he is now in a home that loves him for his shy self! His kitty sibling is very excited to show him the ropes of the family, and loves to lay close by and talk to him. Casey is feeling pretty comfortable with his new kitty sibling but is still getting used to to the humans, but the progress he has made in just a Horst time is super promising!
Have you ever seen anything so sweet?! We are looking for loving fosters for this Tafiti and her four babies, Moana, Maui, Pua, and Hei Hei, along with other cats and kittens in our care. Become a foster and change lives!

Theodore is looking for your help! Theodore has had such a difficult time finding a furever home💔 This sweet boy deserves to feel priceless and loved every day, and learn how safe it can feel to be loved in the right home. Theodore is very skittish and will do best in a home without children since he is fearful of sudden movements or loud noises. Once he understands that you are safe he is a big cuddler and just wants to lay in your lap. At only two years old Theodore has a lot of life left to him and needs a nice home to help open up the spunky boy we know is hiding in there. If you or someone you know could be his forever home, come see him any time we're open at Furry Friends Refuge and give him the new start he deserves!
Enjoy yourself a nice treat, and maybe get one for your dog too! Jovi (pictured below) loves her pup cup! Stop by Furry Friends Refuge to give Jovi a treat yourself (or take her home)!
Playgroups are the best part of our day, and the dogs have been loving this nice weather! If you are looking for someone to enjoy the nice weather with, stop by Furry Friends to learn about volunteering, fostering, or adopting!
Our volunteers and staff work hard every day to care for the animals in our care, even those that are scared or may be a bit standoffish. Lady Gaga is one that has taken us a while to crack but this weekend she showed her true colors! Some of our amazing volunteers worked with this girl to show her that life doesn’t have to be so bad here, and she showed us that she will be a sweet and loving kitty to a family that will give her patience. Want to make a difference in animals like Lady Gaga’s lives but can’t adopt?Become a volunteer with Furry Friends today at www.furryfriendsrefuge.org
Our boys Maverick and Mochi (available for adoption at our Mills Civic location) absolutely love the snow! Many dogs enjoy playing in the snow but please be careful with these low temperatures. Please monitor your pets carefully when outside during these dangerously low temps and limit the amount of time spent outside to keep them safe. If you see a pet without adequate shelter outside during extreme weather, call you local law enforcement or animal control for help. In Clive and Urbandale please call 515-222-3321
There are still lots of pets at our shelter dreaming of a home for Christmas. We are open today Christmas Eve until 5pm. We will do adoptions by scheduled appointment only on Christmas day. Come find someone to share the wonder of joy, family and love with today!
Rosie and Smokey are having a blast with each other here at the shelter but nothing beats a home. We have lots of amazing dogs including these two goofballs looking for a home or foster home right now! Stop by the shelter at ask questions to learn more.

Last night was incredibly busy for us. Some of the chaos was unavoidable and part of what animal rescue looks like—we took in 25 animals in the past 24 hours, including 20 from a house fire and several in need of emergency care. Other parts were caused by the poor decisions of city leaders in West Des Moines and is a sad reminder of why we are working to relocate our facilities we just recently worked so hard to build. The city of West Des Moines fireworks were lit off directly in front of our building—so close that debris from their display is present on our property and in our dog courtyards. We are so grateful to everyone who helped so many animals evacuate our building and move to foster homes and are moved by the care and compassion of the citizens. This shouldn’t have had to have happened, however, and the video here shows the trauma and crying of the animals we couldn’t move. The building literally shook. Because of the location of the city fireworks, many people set up on the shelter property and started lighting off their own fireworks on our property. (See videos in comments) Volunteers were outnumbered to prevent this as police focused on directing traffic at the city lot rather than address the fireworks being lit off in front of them at the animal shelter. The mayor Russ Trimble expressly supported the city’s decision. All other city council members (Greg Hudson, Matt McKinney, Kevin Trevillyan, Doug Loots and Renee Hardman) did nothing after our pleas last year. The city must do better for animals. While stray animals in Urbandale and Clive were reunified by our staff yesterday, West Des Moines residents who lost their animals Monday night were told they would need to wait until today to pick them up. Any stray animals being dropped off or picked up to the new city facility are required to have an appointment. We have already fielded complaints from citizens regarding this policy for which we have no control.

Buddha update: we have made it through two weeks of acupuncture and, along with meds and physical therapy, we are seeing pretty remarkable improvement. When Buddha originally came to the shelter after being found wrapped in a blanket on the side of the road he was unable to stand on his own let alone walk. He is looking for a foster home or permanent home who will be able to continue to support his progress. He is a big boy at 90 lbs and still needs assistance with initially standing and would do best in an environment with limited stairs. He visits the vet twice a week currently and will continue on that schedule for at least a couple more weeks to support progress in his mobility.
