This beautiful girl is Zarah! She is an approximate 3-year-old, 45 lb., possible Border Collie mix. She is a delightful adult dog with a zest for life. She recently showcased her nurturing side by successfully weaning her nine adorable puppies. They came from Oklahoma on January 3. Now that her puppies are weened, Zarah is ready to focus on herself. Her sweet and playful nature is sure to brighten up any home. Zarah is not just playful, but she's also a smart cookie. She loves activities that stimulate her mind and body, like going for walks, playing fetch, and car rides. One of her unique traits is her love for singing. She may not hit all the right notes, but her enthusiasm is infectious. Zarah's intelligence, playfulness, and sweet nature make her an ideal companion. She currently lives with a cat and other dogs in her foster home and does well. Zarah is fully house trained and is able to free roam when left alone. She is ready to bring joy and companionship to a loving home. Adopt Zarah, and let her melodies fill your home with love and laughter! She would do best with another playful dog in the home. She has expressed some resource guarding in her foster home, but that has been resolved after her puppies were weaned and transferred to new foster homes.

Mother to 9 puppies Pepe Le Pew (M) Penelope (F) Flower (F) Honey Badger (F) David Bowie (M) Akela (M) Mochi (F) Kallik (F) Yeti (M). Her puppies are debuting at puppy yoga Sunday at Paws and Pints.

Max is an approximate 1 year old, 22 lb., male possible miniature Australian Shepherd mix.
This boy is such a sweetheart. He loves equally snuggling with his people and playing with the resident dogs. He is submissive and plays nicely. He is not overly energetic and loves to nap for long periods while his foster mom works. He would do best in a home with another dog to play and snuggle with because he loves companionship. He really seems to love being outside - even when it was very cold - chasing squirrels and romping around with the dogs. He can be an escape artist and should not be left alone until he's settled into his new home. He is doing well with the cats in his foster home and is interested in them but does not chase. Max does fine on a leash but could use more experience. He rides very nice in the car. He's a bit of a finicky eater - even turned his nose up at a pup cup! Max is working on crate training. He doesn't like it, but his foster is continuing to work on this with him. When Max first came to his foster home, he marked in the home, so he was put in belly bands. He was recently neutered so we hope he will stop the marking behavior, but this may be an ongoing issue for Max since he already had the behavior established. He has fairly nice manners, but he would benefit from formal training to learn commands.

If you are interested in meeting Max, please complete an online application at https://hopeanimalrescueofiowa.duplie.com/forms/196/dog-application Adoption fee is $250 which includes spay/neuter, microchip, and age-appropriate vaccines.

1/26 Goldie is pending adoption

Goldie is an approximate 4 year old spunky, silly, and super cute girl that loves watching squirrels and birds. She loves jumping around after any flying toys.

Goldie was a central Iowa intake via Iowa Stars for Animals. She came into rescue with front paws declawed already. She was reported to have been rehomed in June when her senior owners went into care and now needed to be rehomed because the new owners were over their pet limit and Goldie seems she would prefer a new home without a dog. They did report she was fine with their other calm cats. She is currently queen in her foster home without other pets.

Adoption fee is $75.00 which includes spay/neuter, age-appropriate vaccines/cares, and microchip. She is FIV/FeLV negative.

If you would like to meet, please complete an online application that can be found at: https://hopeanimalrescueofiowa.duplie.com/forms/198/hope-cat--application

Be their voice! With the dangerous cold forecasted overnight…Iowa code reminder!

“If you believe an animal is being neglected, please contact your local law enforcement. Be polite, but firm and persistent. Ask for your call to be elevated to a supervisor or make a call to your local municipal or county prosecutor if needed.

Here is a great way to start the conversation: "In case you and your department are not aware, Iowa’s legislature passed a new set of definitions and penalties for animal cruelty crimes in July 2020. The neglect code now contains much more clearly defined language for shelter, food, water, shelter, veterinary care, and grooming standards that must be met by pet owners."

Iowa code says animals must be provided with:

WATER:
"Access to a supply of potable water in an amount reasonably sufficient to satisfy the animal’s basic hydration level to the extent that the animal’s health or life is endangered. Access to snow or ice does not satisfy this requirement."

SHELTER:
"Ventilated shelter reasonably sufficient to provide adequate protection from the elements and weather conditions suitable for the age, species, and physical condition of the animal so as to maintain the animal in a state of good health to the extent that the animal’s health or life is endangered. The shelter must protect the animal from wind, rain, snow, or sun and have adequate bedding to provide reasonable protection against cold and dampness. A shelter may include a residence, garage, barn, shed, or doghouse."

The above language is found in Iowa Code 717B: https://www.legis.iowa.gov/docs/ico/chapter/717B.pdf”

Copied from HSUS Iowa

Ask for a call back from the officer who performs the welfare check with findings and actions. If does not meet requirements, ask to speak to a supervisor. Be persistent and be their voice!

Perhaps we unleashed Pancho’s inner star yesterday with a spa session thanks to our friends at Woof Pack Resort & Spa!

Here’s what his foster mom says about him…Pancho is a delightful 3-year-old Spaniel mix weighing 28 pounds. Surrendered along with several other adult dogs from the Des Moines area at the end of June 2024, he quickly showcased his affectionate nature, eagerly snuggling up with his foster mom on the couch or bed at any opportunity. Once he settles into a new environment, he proves to be quite reliable with house training, although he may mark his territory during the initial days of adjustment (belly bands help). He adores being brushed and petted, and he is not shy about expressing his need for attention, ensuring that you never forget to shower him with love and affection. He does very well in a car and loves to go with his family as often as he can. Pancho is hesitant with new people and in new situations.

When first meeting new people, he does tend to bark nervously. It takes him a bit of time to relax and become comfortable. Once he is comfortable, he quickly bonds with people and attaches with a strong bond. This attachment can manifest as possessiveness, particularly when other dogs or people are nearby, as he feels the need to assert his dominance over his newfound human companions. This is a personality trait that will stay with Pancho and not something that can be "trained" out of him. He was adopted to a family in September of 2024 and did very well with the husband and wife for 3 months. When their adult daughter came to visit there was a bite incident when she attempted to kiss Pancho on the forehead. There has been no bite history with his foster family nor with the couple that adopted Pancho. He was returned to Hope at the end of December of 2024 at the urging of the adult daughter. Our partner, The Woof Pack Spa and Resort, has offered several training classes for the new owner of Pancho to help them understand Pancho's possessiveness and how to avoid putting him in situations that may result in unwanted, possessive behaviors or a physical reaction.

His foster mom is dedicated to helping him navigate the dynamics involved in his unwanted behaviors and reactions and is working diligently to foster a harmonious environment where he can flourish. Pancho's best fit family will be one that has no other animals or young children in the home. He is being fostered with a dog savvy; teenage girl and he has done very well with her for several months.

If you are interested in meeting Pancho, please complete an online application at https://hopeanimalrescueofiowa.duplie.com/forms/196/dog-application

Update on 1/24 she is pending adoption

Winnie is a 9.5-year-old, 13 lb., female, miniature Schnauzer. She was a local owner surrender. Winnie is a former breeder release that was adopted about 5 years ago from another local shelter. The owner's husband passed away a short time ago and she could no longer take care of Winnie. Upon moving to a family member's home with young children, Winnie began having issues with house training. She would have accidents despite her going outside to potty. This was believed to be stress induced due to the young children running around the house. She can be a bit timid and needs a quiet home where she can snuggle and bond with her family. Even though she is not a good fit for younger kids, she would likely do well with kids over 13 years old that will be calm and let her snuggle with them. She is the sweetest lop-eared dog you have ever seen. She sleeps in her kennel at night, knows to go outside for potty (she hasn't had any accidents in the week she has been in foster care), and she likes to walk on leash, but she could use some practice. She likes to sleep beside you all day long and she loves car rides. Winnie has been seen by our vet, and it is reported she is missing quite a few teeth, but she eats kibble just fine. If you want an easy dog to love ~she is your pick.
