Snuggle time!

Our coatimundi, Denali, enjoys interacting with people. She also loves to climb like a monkey and can leap with ease from one thing to another. Come out and meet her for yourself!

The coati, also known as the coatimundi, is a medium-sized, tree-climbing mammal found in South America, Central America, and south-western North America. Coatis have a long, rather pig-like snout which gives them the nickname “the hog-nosed raccoon.”

"Eye up"

So, what does it mean to "eye up" someone?

The dictionary definition is: To look over a person so as to evaluate and form an opinion of their appearance and demeanor.

We've also heard the phrase about snakes "eyeing up their prey".

That is not accurate. Snakes detect prey with an impressive array of adaptations. They pick up ground vibrations, sense heat with specialized pits, decipher chemical signals through smell, and detect movement visually. This sensory toolkit allows snakes to expertly locate and capture prey, contributing to their role as efficient predators.

Bearded dragons have binocular vision, which means that both of their eyes work together to perceive depth. This 3D vision is essential for hunting prey and navigating their environment. It allows them to accurately judge distances and make split-second decisions, whether they’re lunging at a tasty insect or leaping from one branch to another.

To enable the panoramic vision of 180 degrees horizontally and 90 degrees vertically, chameleons eyes are mounted on small turrets that move independently, so one eye can see in front and the other behind, meaning a chameleon can constantly scan their environment for prey and predators. Their total field of vision is 342 degrees, with a blind spot of 18 degrees directly behind their head.

Matthew 6:22
“The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light.

Pacman

This creature has nothing to do with the vintage Atari game, Pacman.

This is a Pacman frog. On top of sharing their name with the classic game, they have a number of unique characteristics.

They are also called the South American Horned Frog
This name comes from the “horns” above their eyes. Of course, these aren’t real horns made of bone, but rather flaps of skin that stick up over their eyes. They’re believed to be used to help with camouflage, as they can look like leaf stems flowing in the wind.

They are native to South America. There are a total of 8 species with large mouth and eyes.

They’re naturally found in and around freshwater marshes and pools. Like most frogs, the Pac-Man Frog requires freshwater for reproduction as well as for a water source. However, these frogs are not very good swimmers and once they leave their birthing pond, they’ll only return to the water to lay their own eggs.

They spend most of their time sitting and eating
With their voracious appetite, these frogs will eat anything that happens to wander by their hiding spot. Anything that’s alive that comes within grabbing distance will be eaten immediately.

Pac-Man Frogs have sticky tongues
Their tongue is used to pull their prey into their gigantic mouths, usually the smaller animals like insects.

The female is bigger than the male
The female usually ranges from four to seven inches long, while the male clocks in at two to four inches. This size difference is usually why it’s the female who tries to eat the male and is the usual way to determine the s*x of the frog.

There are a lot more great facts about the Pacman frog. Check it out for yourself or set up a private tour at Whitehaven to learn more about them.
