Here to happily introduce sweet little Rosie! Rosie is a 7 month old beautiful Goldiva Golden Retriever with s***k for days. Rosie joined A1K9 ready to put in the work!! She immediately enrolled in our Daycare with Training program and began training with Taylor two days a week. No surprise to us, she was a quick learner and LOVED training. She’s a food motivated girl who just wants to please! During her training time she absolutely thrived going out on trails, stores and nailing down her basic commands here on property. She’s a smarty pants for sure! During the time out in the daycare yard she has made loads of friends because she loves to play. There isn’t much Rosie doesn’t love - she has a zest for life! She enjoys rolling around with the other puppies her age in the yard & likes to take on the big dogs as well. She’s a sassy little thing and certainly is not shy when it comes to dogs or humans. We love you little Rosie and are excited to watch you grow into the best pup! A big thanks goes out to her dedicated owners, Haley and Evan, for choosing A1K9 Academy for this pumpkin and continuing the work with her at home!

A back to back Moose post! Except this Moose is the sweet little fluffball- Moose the 2 1/2 year old Mini Bernedoodle! Moose joins us on Wednesdays for enriching doggy daycare! We’ve never met a Mini Bernedoodle we didn’t love and Moosey is no exception! He is lovable, feisty, well mannered and an overall GOOD BOY! Moose is a very well socialized little guy as he gets along with all the pups so great out in the yard. He’s also a dog that is not afraid to set healthy boundaries with other dogs and tell them when he’s ready to rest. We appreciate dogs like Moose out in the yard as having these personality types really helps level out and manage the packs! He sure does fit a big personality in that tiny body and a voice to match! Moose is not afraid to use those lungs & he fits right into the wacky Wednesday crew! He loves to play one on one with dogs, hang on the podium and if you can’t tell by the picture, LOVES a good tennis ball (I mean that might be the cutest picture we’ve ever seen!) We love having Moose as part of the A1 pack and are grateful his owners, Matti & Neal, chose A1K9 Academy for their lil guy!

Moosey Man! 🫎 Gracing your feed with this handsome hunk: Moose! Moose is an almost 2 1/2 year old Chocolate Labrador Retriever. Moose didn’t start out as a daycare dog like most, he began his A1K9 journey by enrolling in our 3 week board and train program! Moose got to work with Cameron for three whole weeks working on our Basic Obedience program plus a few extras his owners requested! I can safely speak for Cameron when saying Moose was so much fun to work with and train!! He’s a smart and social boy who not only loves learning but he loooves playing with other dogs. Lucky for us, after his board and train, his wonderful owners wanted to commit to more training and daycare with us! Moose is not a regular here and we cannot be more happy about that. Moose loves chasing the little Aussies, playing fetch and romping around the yard with the most giant smile on his face. He’s one of the most happy go lucky dogs we know and watching him have fun is one of the highlights of our days! Huge thank you to Katie and Brian for not only choosing A1K9 Academy for your boy but for committing to us, our training programs and putting in the work!

Better late than never to post the beautiful Blanche! Or as we like to call her Blanchey the Banshee! Blanche is an almost 2 year old Lilac Merle French Bulldog! I mean can you get any cuter?! Blanche is our professional sun bather out in the yard and has claimed the ramp as her kingdom! It pays to be that tiny because Blanche finds all the coolest nooks to play hide and seek in. Don’t be fooled by that cute lil face though, Blanche can make some crazy wild Frenchie noises when she gets going! (Or when we bring out the dreaded nail clippers!!) She’s a silly and sassy little lady with quite the big personality. She loooves being picked up and snuggled by the daycare crew. She is also very clearly a fashionista, sporting all the coolest jackets in the cooler months. We love you Blanche and look forward to seeing that squinty little look you give us every week! 💕

Service dogs.
Probably one of the most unpopular topics for any pet dog trainer.
I cannot begin to count the amount of service dog training requests I receive.
“Can your online courses train my dog to be a service dog?”
“I need to make my dog a service dog so he can ride on the bus with me” (Yes, someone seriously asked me this)
“Do you certify service dogs?”
No - no - no - and more no.
Service dog training is completely different from pet dog training.
If your dog is trained to walk nicely on a leash and sit and stay, they are a pet dog.
If your dog comes up to you and nuzzles you when you are sad - they are still a pet dog.
If you want your dog to accompany you into stores or fly in-cabin on planes … they’re still only a pet dog and these privileges are not for them.
Service dogs are task-trained.
They are specifically taught to work for people with disabilities.
A dog that solely provides comfort is not a service dog.
I see a lot of people acquiring dogs, labeling them as “my service dog” and *then* going about training them.
This is not how that works.
You cannot just select a dog, put a service dog harness on them and figure the rest out as you go.
We regularly receive requests from dog owners who tell us that their “service dog” pulled them over on leash or nips at visitors.
That their service dog relentlessly chases wildlife on walks or has intense anxiety in social settings.
One time I got a request from a lady who told me that she got a dog from the shelter to be her son’s service dog, but that “service dog” was now biting the son and could I please fix it.
I’m sorry - none of those dogs are not service dogs then. And they likely won’t be service dogs in the future either.
Please be honest about the dog you own.
Unless you worked diligently to train them as a service animal with specific tasks, they are a pet.
A beloved, (hopefully) well-behaved, wonderful pet.
But not a working dog, and you should not demand the privileges that are reserved for true service dogs and their disabled handlers.
Staying clear with this distinction protects the actual service dogs and their owners 🙂

Make way for Zeus!! Zeus is a 10 month old Doberman Pinscher gracing us with his stunning presence twice a week for daycare. You can’t miss him out there prancing in the yard as he’s a big & growing boy! What makes him unique is his one floppy ear- and we love that little quirk about him! Zeus loooves chasing around his friends in the yard and definitely prefers to be the one doing the chasing. You can also catch him hopping up on the blue & yellow ramps over and over. The way he moves & jumps around, we swear he must be part horse! He may look big and bold but this guy is all love and one of the goofiest boys we know! We are so grateful Zeus and his wonderful owner, Michelle, made their way to A1K9 Academy. We couldn’t be happier to add another perfect Doberman to our pack!

Our hearts are broken for the communities & families around Maine affected by this senseless tragedy. We are reminded not to take a single day for granted and to hold your loved ones (and fur babies) close. We are a strong community & as a business will always be here for ANYONE in our state and beyond that needs us. ♥️

Firecracker Finley!!! 🧨 When you look up s***k in the dictionary, you’ll find this girls picture! Finley is an 8 month old mixed breed girly with mostly Lab and Boxer in her DNA. Finley joined our pack as a puppy to gain social skills, make new friends, get out all that puppy energy and simply live her best life- which we can confirm she definitely does every time she is here. It’s so much fun taking on puppies and watching them learn from the other seasoned dogs we have here! Finley’s favorite thing to do out in the yard is wrestle her other puppy pals!!! This lady can play ALL. DAY. LONG!! She has the energy of ten dogs and we love watching her zoom all around! Always eager to run right in the building in the morning, Finley sure does brighten up our days! Thank you to her lovely owners, Mariah & Anthony, for choosing A1K9 Academy for your crazy girl!

Introducing a rambunctious little lab lady, Dakota! Miss Dakota is a Labrador Retriever and almost a year and a half. It took a week or two for Dakota to feel comfortable around all her new friends, acting kind of shy and we thought she was going to be a timid pup. Boy, were we wrong! She just needed to settle in a bit and then her crazy was unleashed!! Dakota can go, go, go and she zips around like no other! She loves to play with all dogs, bouncing around and chasing around the puppies. We found she loves the pool, like most labs do! She’ll do a few zoomies around the yard then fly right into the pool. She’s been with us for daycare and just began some training here with us too, and we have seen how smart this girl is! She loves to learn, work and willing to please for a yummy snack. We are overjoyed to have Dakota as part of our pack and love to watch her progress through training and socialization with the other dogs. We’re thankful for her wonderful owners, Jenny and George, for choosing A1K9 Academy for s***ky Dakota!

Little Luna Lady 🥰 We are thrilled to introduce this happy little girl! Luna is a 6 month old mixed breed full of s***k and zest for life! She joins us for Dog Daycare twice a week and has recently enrolled in our Daycare With Training program! Luna Girl loves her days here, as she gets to romp around with her buddies and also get plenty of mental stimulation during training time - truly the best of both worlds! At first, Luna gravitated towards the other puppies that started around the same time but now plays with everybody and anybody that will engage in the zoomies with her! She loves chasing & being chased, running through the tunnels, wrestling all her pals, and rolling around outside! She’s a very well rounded, happy pup that has integrated into our packs perfectly! She also is one of the most smiley girls we know, always giving us that little smirk and squinting her eyes when she’s excited! We are so happy to have Luna with us here at A1K9 Academy and cannot thank her owners, Pam and Tim, enough for choosing us for your sweet lady!
