NAY! As a clinic that sees exotics, we consistently are seeing patients that have developed lasting effects from eating all seed diets. One of the most notable is the development of liver disease. Birds have a difficult time storing fat (seeds are high in fats) and their response to this increase in their diet is to lay down fat on their livers. Signs of liver disease that can be noticed by an owner include vibrant green feces, a palpable mass in their abdomen (also known as a coelom), and often time can manifest as leg lameness from the liver pressing on the nerve supplies of the leg. Birds should be fed a balanced diet of pellets, fresh greens and fruits, and seeds/grains which should remain only a small portion of their diet.
The video shows an example of a feeding regime for some species of parrots. Always be sure to research the proper diet ratios for your specific species before purchasing or adopting!

We LOVE a confident kitty. Lola really wanted to show off her super-meowdel walk during her appointment.
It's the start of the Summer Olympic games!
We think Eileen would do great doing Freestyle swim, what event do you think your pet would get a medal in? ๐ฅ
It's going to be another hot one! Working on making some popsicles for the kids? Don't forget you can make some for your pup too!
Keep whole or blend up some fresh fruit like watermelon, blueberries, bananas or strawberries and freeze it for your pooch to crunch on.
Sometimes all you need is someone to hold your ears while you finish your cheese ๐ง
Moose the Saint Bernard puppy was all ears, feet and jowls for his visit with Dr Bailey!
We had a first here at Stoneledge Animal Hospital.....A snake! Well, it's not Dr Zell's first snake patient but we certainly have not had the pleasure of seeing one here yet. Calypso is a gorgeous and curious Ball Python that came to get established and confirm her gender.
The conditions lately have been perfect for some pup-up thunderstorms, which can be a real problem for some pups.
Does your dog shows fear of loud noises such as fireworks, construction or thunderstorms? They most likely have something called noise aversion. Typical signs are pacing, cowering, panting, hiding, whining, refusing to eat, freezing, showing hyper vigilance, or becoming excessively clingy.
If your dog is one of the many who exhibit these signs please call the clinic so we can chat about options to help keep them calm so you can enjoy all that summer has to offer together!
It's National Best Friends Day! As pet parents, we are lucky to be able to spend every day with friends who are always there for us. Whether they are fluffy, feathered or scaly our pets are just the best friends there could be!
So show us your best friends and let us know how you are celebrating them today ๐
We were going to do a poll but the reactions to the original post and from staff has really made the decision for us.
Welcome Eileen (eye lean ๐คฃ)
We are very happy to announce that our practice is growing! Stoneledge Animal Hospital is welcoming a new doctor to the team: Doctor Joey Buzzell, aka Dr. Zell.
Born and raised in Corinth, ME, Dr. Zell knew he wanted to be a veterinarian since fifth grade and began gaining experience by shadowing local vets, sparking his interest in the profession. When he graduated from Central High School in 2015, he spent a year at the University of New England in Biddeford before transferring to Boston University and completing his BA in Biology, Following his undergrad, Dr. Zell attended the Atlantic Veterinary College on Prince Edward Island in Canada where he further explored his love of exotics while gaining his DVM. During his degree, he worked for 4 years in the AVC Zoo, Exotics, and Wildlife department and saw a caseload consisting of reptiles, birds, raptors, and small mammals. Following veterinary school, Joey worked for Kindred Spirits Veterinary Clinic in Orrington, ME while studying for his licensing exam. Now, he will be bringing his exotics passion to Stoneledge Animal Hospital to extend wellness and husbandry care to all friends furry, scaley, and feathered.
Have a unique critter needing care? ๐ญ๐ธ๐ข๐ Call us at 207-797-4292 and get scheduled to see Dr Zell today!
