⚠️ Operational Notice: The ARLGP will remain closed Thursday, February 6th ⚠️

It has come to our attention that our previous foreman, Diamond, greatly exaggerated her experience and certifications in the construction industry. It's almost as if she had never renovated a lobby in her life. As such, our renovation is ongoing. We have hired a team of humans to complete the job, who will be carefully managed by Midnight (below) who will ensure satisfactory completion of the job.

We apologize for the inconvenience this causes and are looking forward to reopening and resuming adoptions. Thank you for your patience as we work to improve our shelter! Our staff will continue to be on site caring for our animals while we are closed to the public.

Want a sneak peek at what our Humane Ed camps are like? News Center Maine came by our MLK Day camp last month to meet some of our super smart students and learn what humane education is all about.

If you know a kid passionate about animals, we still have spots left for our next 6th-8th grade camp for February break, 2/20-2/21. Our camps include classroom activities, meet-and-greets with our shelter pets, and some awesome guest speakers! Head to arlgp.org/humane-education/unleashed-camps for more info.

Through classes for students, the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland teaches kids how to recognize what animals are communicating and how to advocate for them.

London got the sweetest Valentine from one of our supporters! Kiersten wrote to London, "Big hugs from Kiersten and 3 huskies who found forever homes. We know you will find yours, too!" London was so happy she had to go zooming through the snow.

Our foreman Diamond would like to inform you the Animal Refuge League will be closing early today at 2pm as we undergo renovations to our lobby area. We will remain closed as usual for Wednesday and reopen to the public Thursday morning. We are confident this project is in the most capable paws. Midge and Aspen are a pair of spunky ladies each looking for their new home! They're both a little shy, but warm up quickly and might even offer tiny kisses on your hand to show they like you. These two are not bonded but have enjoyed living with each other at the shelter, and we think they would do well with other dogs at home with the right introductions. Natalie is a sweet and cuddly girl with the most expressive ears! She's an energetic and playful pup, so to help her blow off some of that energy our Mutt Mentor Elizabeth took her out for a nose work adventure, sniffing out all the good treats! As you can see, her nose does in fact work.

UPDATE: Garfield is going home!

Celebrity alert: the actual, real-life Garfield has arrived at the ARLGP. At least, that's what he claims. We're not so sure, because our Garfield is way more friendly and cuddly than we expect his cartoon counterpart to be. He seems to have the relaxing part down, though. Why is he called Uncle Peanut? Because he's just a little peanut? Definitely not. Because he's shaped like a peanut? Maybe getting closer. Honestly, we're not even sure he's an uncle.

What we do know is this guy would love a caring family to help him come out of his shell. We've been told he adores kids, but please bring any of his future nieces and nephews to the shelter to meet him first. Every family needs an uncle - come get yours at the ARLGP today or at arlgp.org/dogs.

Shout out to one of our great community friends SoPo Paws for their support of our animals. They came to help us with our grooming needs when our Shih-Tzus arrived (who have all since gone home!) and have continued to volunteer their time and talents since. Thank you for making our dogs feel clean and comfortable in our care!

We are *hoppy* to introduce you to a couple of our great bunnies available for adoption! Our office rabbit Oswald (gray) loves roaming around on the floor and has done great meeting our Humane Education kids. Doof (white) is a big boy who loves getting spoiled with pets and treats. Both of these bunnies would like to roam free or have their own space in their new homes, and would do well with kids that can learn bunny body language. Thanks to our friends at Oxford Casino Hotel for betting big on the ARLGP! They raised over $12,000 for us this year and came by the shelter to give us our "chip". They also got to meet adoptable puppy Feyre, which we think is a pretty fair trade. Thank you for your continued support!

We're checking in on another of our adorable adopted pets in this month's Evergreen Credit Union Happy Tails!

You might recognize Scully (now named Sully) as one of our pups from the Shelter Sleep-In. She's growing up fast and settling in well with her new family. While they're experiencing some typical puppy behaviors, her family says she is their "adorable little monster."

"She loves going to the dog park here in Westbrook and has made lots of doggy friends," they told us. "Sully does well with other dogs and greets other owners appropriately in this setting. Sully also likes looking out the window during car rides and receiving pup cups at the drive thru. Once Sully settles down for the night she likes to cuddle up next to me or in my arms while we sleep."
