VCA Charities has partnered VCA Veterinary Referral and Emergency Center of Westbury to help pets find and remain in loving homes through the annual “A Home for the Holidays” campaign, now through December 31st.

Your donation supports pets in need through adoption readiness and enrichment, veterinary care, behavior training, and transport programs – it also supports the growth and expansion of our Dog Day Out field trip program which increases a shelter dog’s adoptability by 10x‼️ This year alone, more than 6,000 dogs have left the shelter for a dog day out and 97% have had a positive outcome (rescued, fostered, adopted)!

If you take your dog trick-or-treating this Halloween, keep them close on a non-retractable leash. Your dog could become fearful or aggressive if approached by excited children in costumes, so always be mindful of their surroundings.

Dogs can be super sensitive to unfamiliar costumes and busy sidewalks full of trick-or-treaters, so we recommend leaving them home. If ringing doorbells may upset your pet, create a safe space for them in a separate room with white noise.

Halloween costumes are better suited to humans than pets; however, if you dress them up, make sure costumes are loose enough to allow free movement but snug enough to prevent tripping. Also, be aware of choking hazards, like buttons!

Stash your Halloween loot away from your pets! Chocolate, gum and foil wrappers can cause upset stomachs or poisoning. If you are worried your pet may have eaten something they weren’t supposed to we are here for you & your pet 24/7, 516-420-0000.

Meet Zee, a courageous dog who came to us with a mass on her leg which was severe enough that amputation was needed to relieve her pain. Our dedicated emergency team, Robin our social worker, Dr. Stern & her surgery team worked seamlessly to provide exceptional patient care. After a successful surgery, Zee was sitting up 30 minutes post-surgery and enjoying a romp on the golf course the very next day. Her mom says she's like a new dog! This remarkable recovery showcases the high level of care and teamwork we bring to every patient.
