When you have shelter days like this, it makes you love what you do and why you do it!! Two dog adoptions is one day…yes in one day!! Today the stars were aligned and these lucky pups found their new homes. Congratulations to Penelope and Bruno! Good luck and much love to both of you and your new families!

Talk about a great day! Juliana, a senior at Westerly High School, organized a basketball game, for her senior project - girls against moms, last night at WHS. She did this to raise money for the animal shelter- and holy cow, did she ever!!! $1305.00 was raised. Juliana, we are so very proud of you and thank you for thinking of the animals here at the shelter!!! What an inspiring example of compassion and leadership! One of our shelter dogs, Blu, thanks Juliana too 😊🐶💚

So are we lucky or what??!! Two weeks in a row- another kindergarten class comes to the animal shelter! It is NEVER to young to teach humane education!!! Nikea and Art LOVE to have these visits!!!

Future Animal Control Officers? We hope so! What a pleasure Nikea and I had showing these kindergarteners from Saint Michael’s what we do here at the shelter both on and off the road! Our very own volunteer, Carol Benevides have these children at school and we have the privilege to do this every year! Happy Sunday, all!

Meet Willow, our Lucky March pet of the month! Willow is a sweet boy and seems rather spry regardless of his age, 12. The one thing that might slow him down is that he is Hyperthyroid, meaning his weight gain will be an issue for the rest of his life. Right now we are treating it with prescription food, we do not feel that medication is needed right now. With treatment, most cats with hyperthyroidism can live long and healthy lives. However, if left untreated, the condition can lead to serious complications, such as heart failure and kidney failure. Willow has a lot of love still left to give and he is not letting this diagnosis get the best of him. Unsure how he will do with other animals because he seems independent and an "on his own terms" kind of cat. Willow is up to date on shots, neutered, and microchipped. ****Update: Ask and you shall receive!! A kind vet tech from Woodriver will be adopting Mr. Chester! Such great news!!****

Urgent Foster home needed!! A couple weeks ago we posted a cat that was a stray and wanted to find its owner. No luck on the owner however, the cat was sick when it arrived and Woodriver Animal Hospital have been saints in taking him on. We have found that he was severely dehydrated and diabetic. It was touch and go for a couple days be he is a fighter and has regained his strength to eat and walk around. Why do we need a foster home? He is on insulin every 12 hours and as a shelter we do not have the man power to maintain his insulin schedule. He is also on a potassium supplement until his liver values come up, this should only be for another week, until his eating habits get better. The Westerly Animal Shelter will be responsible for any medical costs. As a Foster you will be responsible for giving him insulin shots and monitoring his health daily. We can always talk about adoption if the situation comes to that.

Calling all Bulldog fans!! Meet Penelope, the English Bulldog! She is a sensitive girl who will need a patient family with out any other animals. Penelope, (aka Penny for short), is a little temperamental about her face and neck area being touched. We think its because she is tired of her eyes being cleaned all the time. She had cherry eye surgery back in 2020 and one of the cherry eyes came back. This one affects her vision because it produces eye mucus that needs to be wiped daily. This is the only medical issue we see with her at this time. We have been told that she is good with kids but have seen some aggression here at the shelter but more due to being in a cage, however she does change when she is out of it. Penny is up to date on shots, spayed and microchipped. We would like to place her in a home that knows and understands the breed and doesn't just want the breed. Let us introduce Miss Ginger! She is a 10 month old Chihuahua that is high energy and the biggest wiggle worm so your hand eye coordination should be in good shape. We are gearing toward an active young family that may or may not have kids, older would be better. Please understand that she is very small but not the easiest to handle and can be unintentionally nippy with excitement. Ginger was the only dog in the last home she was in so we are unsure how she is is with other animals. Ginger is a special diva dog that will need a special active family to tire her little legs out. We had some very exciting adoptions today. One was our very own Petunia, February pet of the month, and the two Guinea Pigs Alfie and Mega Tron. We would like to give a special shout out to Mona's House - A Place For Homeless Pets for taking on Petunia. We wish them all the best!
