Our newest “Josie’s Cat” has cheeks for days! Meet Adam from Pet Refuge. This 5 year-old gray and white guy has been through the ringer, and now all he wants is a gentle hand to rub those cheeks in his very own home.

Adam was discovered by a Good Samaritan while fending for himself out in the cold. He received veterinary care and a call to Pet Refuge so this sweet boy could get his second chance! He is feeling very uncertain in the shelter and initially seems shy. However, Adam has allowed his trusted volunteer friends to pet him, and there’s no doubt that finding a safe, secure environment will be transformative.

There is one trick to bring this big guy to life – squeeze up treats! Adam is very food motivated. His ideal home would be quiet with no young children and no dogs. He would prefer to be an only cat, too, or at least cohabitate with other gentle cats. His only other request is for a warm nap spot.

Adam has tested positive for Feline Immunodeficiency Virus. This means that either he just carries the gene for FIV or that he does have an active case. FIV+ cats can lead long, healthy lives while kept safely indoors and taken for routine veterinary visits. The virus is only contagious to other cats (not other animals or humans) by deep bite wounds.

Adam has overcome the odds to be ready for adoption. Now he just needs a special person ready to let him decompress and blossom into the amazing pet he’s meant to be!

For more information about Adam, contact the Pet Refuge at (401) 294-1115 or make an appointment to visit 500 Stony Lane in North Kingstown, RI 02852. Visits to the shelter are for approved applications only, so please download an application at thepetrefuge.org and either drop off completed application or email to [email protected].

Holly came to VPR a few weeks ago after her owner could no longer care for her. She’s an adorable 12-year old petite Shih Tzu. We’ll be posting her full bio soon and looking for a new home. Feel free to submit an adoption application if you’re interested in Holly.

REST IN POWER

Miss McBagel

She wasn’t famous and didn’t have a million people following her story like Sterling, Bison or Big John.

She was, to some, just an old tossed away terminally ill mule that lived quietly and peacefully in anonymity in our sanctuary.

To us, she was the larger than life McBagel. She greeted many a tour with a happy bray and always was begging for more treats and attention.

She’s a symbol of the hundreds of horses that have come across Colby’s Crew Rescue that were deemed so valueless they were sold directly into slaughter, quietly shipping across the border to their death month after month prior to our intervention.

Now horses like McBagel have a chance. She spent an entire year in our rescue receiving top notch care and the cancer that should have taken her quality of life six months ago— stayed at bay thanks to the tireless work of our lead veterinarian Dr. Carly Mayer and her associates who have been driving out daily to render compassionate care to McBagel.

And Dr. C was also was the person who kindly and respectfully let us know today it was time.

I am so grateful to have access to a vet so compassionate, strong and good at their job.

This is what our team quietly does for horses day after day, seeking no accolades or credit. McBagel isn’t unique, there are many more like her in the rescue, but each one exists and passes to us as an individual.

While we may have greater numbers than some, we love them no less.

McBagel loved pumpkin treats, singing and dancing with the public outside her stall, and tossing her wardrobe across the aisle. She loved people. She loved her other mule friends.

She was a good mule.

She died with Ally holding her head and easing her quietly from this world, with Dr. C by her side ensuring she felt no pain. Tears flowed but that’s to be expected— the price of great love is grief.

She will be missed.

But I know deep down as she gained her wings, somewhere a mule will walk across our doorstep instead of into the slaughterhouse and McBagel will smile down from heaven.

“It’s your turn,” she’ll say. “Take care of my girls. Take care of my people.”

And so the rescue marches on.

We know that there are many cat lovers out there who may not be in a position to adopt but still want to help local community cats. Here are three ways you can help:

Become a TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) Volunteer or Advocate: TNR is the most humane and effective way to manage community cat populations. Even if you can't trap yourself, you can help by volunteering with local TNR organizations. They often need help with transportation and spreading awareness about TNR.

Donate to Local Rescues like us: Rescuing and caring for community cats can be expensive. Donations help cover the costs of food, medical care, spay/neuter surgeries, and other essential supplies. Even a small contribution can make a big impact on the lives of local cats.

Provide Shelter and Food for Community Cats: If you have outdoor space, you can provide shelter for community cats by building, purchasing or picking up cat shelters. These shelters offer a safe and warm place for cats to escape the elements. accepts material donations and never charges for stray and feral cat shelters.

We thought we have seen it all with medical emergencies...then here comes Gio. A young kitten that was found dumped in Clements' Marketplace - Bristol, RI parking lot, right here in Bristol. He appeared to have stomach issues but it became much more than that. After being rushed to the emergency 3 times it has been diagnosed that he has a perineal hernia, not commonly seen in cats. This is caused by a combination of genetics and environmental factors like straining when going to the bathroom. His operation entailed removing muscle from his pelvis to rebuild his muscle in his perineal area. Well this boy was found by the right people. Thanks to the friends he is on his way to healing. Now the Friends needs you. This operation itself has exhausted our emergency Veterinary fund close to over $7,000. Can you help us continue to help cats like Gio? Make a donation today.

Don’t mind us, we’re just over here breaking the internet with our newest intake. Scooby joined the VPR family on Sunday. He’s 15 years old and has had a tough few months. Scooby’s owner went into the hospital and asked a neighbor to watch Scooby. Unfortunately, his owner passed away. A bit later, the woman watching Scooby then went into the hospital and she also sadly passed away. Scooby was left with another neighbor who could not keep him and she reached out to us. Scooby is a lovely boy who does not look or act 15. He saw our vet on Monday and we’ll have a medical plan for him soon.
