Cats(and chickens) are a new concept for her as is living with a few other dogs. She’s learning about appropriate interactions with all of her new friends. She’s catching on how each of the dogs like to play, as they all have preferred play styles. Tuna and Mouse enjoy playing chase with Minnie and Lola likes a good game of chase followed by some gentle rough housing. Lil Kit isn’t a big fan of Minnie and she’s learning to give her more space 🥰 this sweet girl has lots of potential and would love a home with someone who can give her lots of love as well as rules and boundaries to be the best adventurous snuggle bug around!

It’s loose leash walking Wednesday folks!!! Loose leash walking goals looks different for each of our clients. Some want their pups to stick close by, others don’t mind if the dog is a little in front of them and others prefer that the dog just isn’t pulling. During our training sessions we are rewarding for the dogs checking in/looking up at us, having slack in their leash, and if they’re reactive, lots of treats happen when they notice their triggers like dogs,people, or bikes are present! Good things happen when we look!

Mental enrichment is super important for your pup (and cat!) and enrichment can mean a lot of different things! Maybe you’re out on a sniffari (a walk that allows your dog to get all the sniffs!) or maybe you want to make meal times a bit more fun for your critter! #outwardhound makes a lot of different kinds of puzzle feeders with different levels of difficulty; you can even find them at #tjmaxx and #marshalls sometimes cheaper than Amazon or chewy!
You can use them anytime of the day for meals or treats (or both!) if you’re trying to get your dog used to a confinement area or if you have guests coming over you could offer your dog a puzzle toy to help him relax and keep him busy. You can also get crafty and recycle some paper towel tubes or cardboard boxes and fill them with food and treats and let your dog shred them to get the treasures inside!!!
The other perk, sometimes your dog might take a nice little nap afterwards because it tires out their brain to do some of the enrichment activities!!

Cat body language can be surprisingly subtle. Our feline friends often signal their feelings with a twitch of the ear or a flick of the tail. When normal cat behaviors are performed outside of expected situations, it can be a sign of stress! Those out-of-context behaviors are called displaced behaviors. We know stress is inevitable and isn't always negative, but it can be good practice to study your kitty's body language and observe if they show any displaced behaviors in situations you know might cause stress. These can include vet appointments, days with unusual amounts of activity/foot traffic, and times where you've been away longer than normal. Management Monday update!! If you remember last week Mouse and Lola Nugget had lots of structured interactions with baby gates and leash drags to reintroduce them after a long summer vacation apart from Damiana’s home; now Mouse has graduated to wearing a short leash handle when going out with the gang! Today the girls have had a joyful time romping in the yard, and Lola even initiated a game of chase and play in the sand pit! Mouse did a great job of not running her over but instead jumped over her and got lots of praise when Lola walked away and she didn’t follow her!
Structure and rules for your pups will make life easier for all! The rules we put in place may be different for each family and dog(s) we work with but it helps your dog learn what you want from them; and as time goes on you can slowly modify or remove the management tools you’ve been using!!
