Cielo is very grateful for our 25 year partnership with the team at Janssen Veterinary Clinic. We can appreciate the tremendous demands of the veterinary profession. Their dedication never goes unnoticed.

Words cannot describe the admiration we have for our team of doctors. We are amazed by how they continually go above and beyond for our clients, patients, and fellow teammates. They even maintain their sense of humor when we ask for a picture in their crowns (from Burger King 🤣). We invite you to share words of support and encouragement with them in honor of Veterinarian Appreciation Day on June 18th. Many thanks to you, our clients, for your part in providing the opportunity to have such a great team! https://jvc.vet/veterinarians

This morning we experienced an emergent, freak situation that required the help of Dr. Lydia Mudd of Janssen Veterinary Clinic and the Westfield Fire Department. We are incredibly grateful for their help, and we are happy to report that the very brave, calm mare who is in our care came away with only minor surface wounds.

COOL SCIENCE (pun intended)!

An old myth wants us to believe that horses should be walked until they cool completely after exercise, even in the summer. However, a study from 2020 looked at five different ways to cool a horse after exercise: walking, walking with fans, walking with intermittent cold water application, walking with intermittent cold water application and scraping, and stationary with continuous tap water application. As it turns out, the method that resulted in the quickest return to normal body temperature was stationary with continuous tap water application (2 minutes), while walking alone took the longest time for recovery (25 minutes).

Bottom line: enjoy your rides in the sun this summer but remain vigilant for signs of heat stress in your horse. If they look tired, it’s time for a drink, a cool bath, and a break in the shade.

Get the Horses Through the Night

To all my friends from near and far who care for equine beast:
May the winter chill that bites to bone still allow some peace

May all the fuzzy coats, whether God or human made
Hold tight their blessed body heat and keep shivering at bay

May water in faucets and spigots flow free, not turn to frozen stone
If nothing else, may buckets feel light as we tote them from cozy homes

May forage be dry and fragrant and plentiful in their favorite form
Keep their mouths and bellies busy, making fuel to burn for warmth

May their shelter be steadfast, whether forest or treeline, stall, run-in, or shed
Hold them strong and standing tall to shield from gnashing wind

Last, not least, keep their handlers calm-ease their worried heads
These frigid times have a way of making them worry for four-legged friends

May the warmth of bath or fire or drink ease the ache of all their strain
Help them know they’ve done the best they could, their work is not in vain

May their overall wish be granted when the morning does arrive
Greet them with nickers and grateful nuzzles: just get the horses through the night

As temperatures keep climbing, here is your reminder to pay close attention to signs of heat stress in your horse this summer. ☀️🐴

Signs of heat stroke may range from mild to severe and life-threatening. Foals usually cannot take as much heat as adult horses. A mare may be fine, but her foal may be getting sick from being out on a hot day. Horses with heavy muscling or excess fat or in poor condition will have more problems. Keep in mind that exercise is a major source of body heat and that strenuous work on a hot, humid day can lead to problems in a short period of time for even the best-conditioned horse.

Does this mean you should not ride on a hot day? Not necessarily. It just means you should take precautions and use your common sense. Remain vigilant for dehydration and signs of heat exhaustion, as heat exhaustion should not be underestimated and can advance to heat stroke quickly. Above all, be kind and attentive to your equine partner’s need. If you feel hot, they feel hotter. So if they look tired—it’s time for a drink, a cold bath, and a break in the shade.

As always, consult your primary veterinarian for more tips tailored to your specific horse’s situation! Read more about heat stroke on our website at https://aaep.org/horsehealth/heat-stroke

Cooling down a horse in cold weather is not a very glamorous task and is also quite time-consuming, but it remains a very important part of the process to ensure you don’t jeopardize your horse’s health by allowing him to catch a chill.

Our friends at Equus Magazine have a few useful tips to share. You can read the full article on their website at https://equusmagazine.com/riding/coolingout-10486/

I'll be in the barn.

When people have come to visit over the years they commonly hear from me I'll be in the barn.

When life gets hard I'll be in the barn.
When things are just right I'll be in the barn.

When the sun shines
The rain falls
Or snow covers the ground
I'll be in the barn.

If things seem to be falling apart or if I'm celebrating the simple things, I'll be in the barn.

When I'm looking for answers or trying to clear my mind, I'll be in the barn.

When I'm looking for myself, I'll be in the barn.

If I'm working or trying to relax, I'll be in the barn.

Even when I'm not in the barn my mind drifts there, I find myself thinking about being in the barn.....

soaking feed for the next day,
mucking or spreading manure,
how to fix a problem I've been having with horse,
tack that needs cleaned or changed or mended,
wounds that need doctored,
if I need to put on blankets or take them off.

It's where I keep my riches
All my wins and my failures
Everyone of my hopes
Dreams
Hardships
And memories

You can find them all in the barn, buried in the hay, hiding under a saddle, spilling out of the feed bins, or glimmering with dust in the evening light.

I may be covered in dust, dirt, mash feed, hair, and hay, smell of sweat and manure, and sometimes there may be blood or tears but I'll be there. I'll be in the barn.

So if you’re wondering where to find me, I'll be in the barn. If I'm not there I promise I'm on my way.
