🌈 FUN FACT FRIDAY 🌈
Greyhounds can run at 35 miles per hour for up to 7 miles. Cheetahs can only maintain their speed for around 200 to 300 yards, so a cheetah would actually get passed up by a Greyhound.

There are many parasites that can affect your dogs, including roundworms, heartworms, tapeworms, hookworms, and whipworms. Most intestinal parasites are generally diagnosed using f***l flotation, where a small stool sample is mixed with a special solution that causes the eggs to float to the top of the solution. Tapeworm cannot always be detected by f***l flotation and diagnosis is typically made when segments are observed on the f***s or around the dog’s a**s. Heartworm is diagnosed with a blood test. Sometimes these internal parasites are not discovered until clinical signs become present, so a f***l screening and heartworm test should be a part of your dog's routine annual care. πŸ’©β€οΈ

🌈 FUN FACT FRIDAY 🌈
When Ben Rea, a successful British antique dealer and known recluse died in 1988, he left his 12.5 million dollar fortune (26.7 million by today's standards) to his cat, Blackie. This made Blackie the wealthiest cat in the world. Blackie still holds the Guinness World Record for Wealthiest Cat (we wonder how many contenders there are). The money was eventually divided equally to three cat charities who were tasked with taking care of Blackie until he passed away.

(We couldn't find a picture of Blackie himself, but here's a cat that resembled him and his wealth.)

While not common, vaccine reactions are possible. If you notice any facial swelling, hives on the belly, and/or persistent vomiting or diarrhea, this is most likely what your pet is experiencing. If a vaccine reaction occurs, please bring your pet to the hospital right away, or head to the nearest emergency hospital. ⚠️ If your pet is tired, sore, sleepy or slightly painful today, that is normal. In the event of an after-hours emergency, we recommend you contact your nearest emergency vet!

Even though home-cooked and raw diets are popular right now, well-balanced home-cooked or raw diets are often difficult for owners to design and make. Let's debunk some myths about these types of diets!

πŸ₯© Pet dogs and cats should be fed what their ancestors ate because they are metabolically adapted to this diet.
While dogs and cats are carnivorous, the non-domesticated relatives of our pets had a very different life. A study investigating differences in the genomes of dogs and wolves found that several of the differences between them were directly related to genes involved in starch digestion and fat metabolism. This shows that pet dogs have changed metabolically to a more omnivore-carnivore than their wild relatives.

πŸ₯© Commercial diets are unhealthy because of the processing, by-products, and chemically synthesized additives and preservatives.
Processing like extrusion of dry food or heating can affect nutritional quality of the food, however benefits include increased plant protein and starch digestibility, destruction of anti-nutritional factors, increased amount of soluble fiber, and reduced lipid oxidation. Because these are known effects of processing, manufacturers are able to supplement specific nutrients to ensure that the diet is complete and balanced.

πŸ₯© Raw food contains natural enzymes essential for optimal digestion and intestinal function.
Enzyme supplementation is generally not necessary to enable dogs and cats to digest their food. Enzymes in food will, to a large degree, be denatured in the acidic environment of the stomach. While there were studies showing that the digestibility of crude protein in raw diets may be superior, there also have been studies that show there were no difference. However, a few studies have shown that the digestibility of crude protein in raw diets may be superior to dry food. Whether this difference is due to food related enzymes in the raw food or processing related decreased digestibility of protein in the dry food is not certain, but one study found no differences in nutrient digestibility when the raw meat was cooked before feeding, which could indicate the latter. Furthermore, it is unknown whether this increased digestibility is of clinical relevance.

πŸ₯© Raw food diets naturally cover the pet’s nutrient needs and are safe.
When comparing nutrient content in raw diets with recommended allowances for adult dogs, 60% had one or more nutritional imbalances, including low calcium and vitamin D content, low iodine, copper, zinc, and/or vitamin A content. There have also been published case reports on malnutrition and growth disturbances in puppies fed raw diets. Additionally, raw food feeding significantly increases the risk of the pet harboring zoonotic infectious agents such as Salmonella sp. and Campylobacter jejuni.

We recommend feeding your pet a well-balanced diet designed for them, and we recommend Hills, Royal Canin, or Purina Pro Plan diets. These are just some things to consider when trying to pick a diet for your furry friend!

Whenever you bring your pet in for their yearly wellness exam, we will probably offer to do some bloodwork. You may ask, why does my pet need bloodwork if they're perfectly healthy? 🀨 Doing bloodwork means checking your pet's organ function and can help us catch problems that may be hiding earlier, which allows us to give better care to your pet! Not only does doing bloodwork help us track your pet's values over time, but it also allows us to have a baseline for when your pet is healthy so that if your pet gets sick, we can better identify differences from your pet's normal values. 🩸 Bloodwork may be recommended more frequently if your pet is on any chronic medications so that we can monitor how the medications are working. Consider doing bloodwork next time your pet comes to visit us!

One of the core vaccines we offer to cats at our hospital is the FVRCP. We're going to break it down in this post! πŸ•Ί

The "FVR" stands for feline viral rhinotracheitis caused by Feline Herpesvirus-1. It can be spread by aerosol and droplets. The clinical signs are a runny nose, sneezing, eye infection and eye ulcers, poor appetite, fever, and lung infection. Persistent infection can reoccur during stressful times. Infected cats can transmit it to other cats. Painful mouth ulcers can occur as well.

The "C" in FVRCP stands for feline calicivirus. It can be spread by aerosol and droplets, but it can also survive in the environment so it can be spread through contaminated surfaces, too. Symptoms include runny nose, eye infection, mouth ulcers, poor appetite, fever, lung infection, and lameness. Persistent infection can reoccur during stressful times. Infected cats can transmit it to other cats. Painful mouth ulcers can occur as well.

The "P" in FVRCP stands for feline panleukopenia, which is also known as feline distemper. It is spread primarily by contaminated surfaces, direct contact with infected cats, and litter boxes. Symptoms include a fever, poor appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration, abdominal pain, tremors and lack of coordination, brain infection, and heart damage. This can lead to severe illness and even death.

Give our office a call if you have more questions about the FVRCP vaccine or if you'd like to setup an appointment to get your kitty protected! πŸ’‰

07/30/2024

Heartworms are parasitic worms that live in the pulmonary arteries (and within the heart) of dogs, that can measure up to a foot in length. They cause substantial damage to the lungs and heart. ❀️ Adult heartworms cause inflammation of the blood vessels in the lungs, resulting in respiratory issues and pulmonary hypertension. In some cases, this leads to weight loss, weakness, right-sided congestive heart failure, reduced quality of life, and even death. Mosquitos are vectors of heartworm disease, which means they are a carrier and transmitter of disease from an infected individual to a non-infected individual. 🦟 It takes about six to seven months for the larvae to reach adulthood, which is why we don't recommend doing a heartworm test on your puppy until they are 7 months old! We won't be able to detect any of those pests if the heartworms are too young.

Heartworm preventatives can be prescribed by your veterinarian and come in oral, topical, and injectable forms. Preventing heartworm is much easier than treating it, and more cost-effective for you too! We do recommend giving heartworm preventative year-round. Your dog can be infected if just one preventative dose is missed.

Blood tests for heartworm infections are recommended yearly. If you do not give preventatives regularly every month or if you switch preventatives, more frequent testing may be recommended.

Give us a call if you have any more questions about heartworms! πŸ€™

07/29/2024

We offer canine influenza vaccines in our hospital. While it is not a core vaccine, we do recommend it if your dog spends time around other dogs, like at dog parks, grooming salons, or boarding facilities. The vaccine protects against canine influenza virus (CIV), or H3N2/H3N8. These viruses can be spread through aerosol, droplets and contaminated surfaces. CIV can cause symptoms such as cough, runny nose, difficulty breathing, fever, poor appetite, and lung infection. Like kennel cough, if other viruses are involved or it is a young puppy, severe disease can develop and even lead to death.

Give us a call to schedule an appointment for your dog to get the canine influenza vaccine!

So you think your dog has an ear infection... what do you do? πŸ‘‚

Otitis externa is an inflammation or infection of the external ear ca**l that can be caused by bacteria, yeast, ear mites, or allergies. At your pet's appointment, we will obtain samples on swabs to look at under the microscope so that we can properly identify the type of infection your pet has so that we can prescribe the best medications for your pet. The doctor will also take a look inside your pet's ears to look for inflammation and/or damage.

Here are the key components in treating an ear infection:
1. Cleaning the ear ca**l thoroughly to remove excessive ear wax and other debris.
2. Applying medication into the ear ca**l.
3. Allowing your veterinarian to re-examine the ear until the infection has cleared up.
4. Identifying and correcting the underlying cause of the otitis externa.

To clean and medicate the ears:
1. Apply cleanser to the ear liberally.
2. Massage it into the ear ca**l by gently massaging the base of the ear.
3. Wipe the accessible portion of the ear clean with cotton gauze if you have it. Let your dog or cat shake out the excess. Repeat if necessary.
4. Apply the medication prescribed by the veterinarian into the ear ca**l. The medication bottle should have a nozzle or tip that is correctly sized to administer the medication into your pet's ear ca**l.

⚠️ DO NOT insert cotton swabs into the ear ca**l! ⚠️

If you suspect your pet has an ear infection, give us a call or schedule online to get your pet taken care of!

Bordetella, also known as the "kennel cough" vaccine, is one of the core vaccines we recommend at our facility. Bordetella bronchiseptica can be spread by aerosol, droplets, and contaminated surfaces. It causes clinical signs like a cough, runny nose, difficulty breathing, fever, poor appetite, and lung infection. Disease can be worse if multiple infections, like pneumonia, are present or if the puppy is young. This is an especially important vaccine to have if your dog spends time around other dogs, whether that be at a dog park, boarding facility, grooming salon, etc.

If you have any questions or would like to schedule an appointment for your dog to get a bordetella vaccine, feel free to give our office a call!
