Last weekend, I opened a time capsule that I made in 5th grade, 25 years ago! By far my favorite photo I'd included was this one of me, in my super cool pajamas, holding my very first kitten, Cuddles. We adopted him June 7, 2000, so this is one of the very first photos I have of him!

So, I guess you could say my cat habit is a quarter century old now. 🙀

Happy Caturday!

Wait, do you not know what Caturday is? You must be missing a cat! Luckily, I have two of the most perfect babies available. Lana and Lee are 5 years old, spayed, vaccinated, and ready for adoption! After hiding most of the past 24 hours, Lana and Lee’s true personality has started to come out. I suspected they were cuddle bugs and I have been proven correct. It’s hard to get a photo though because whenever I pick up my phone, they try to knock it out of my hands so they can get more pets.

Yesterday marked 5 years since I brought the princess home “for 3 weeks.”

Reading the comments on this post from 2020 are so funny because they’re all saying I’m going to have the hardest time giving her back. As it turned out, I had to give her back three times: once because she was on death’s door, once because I was going out of town (and didn’t have a cat sitter yet!) and once for her surgery. When I dropped her off for that one I promised her I was always coming back. And we’ve kept that promise to each other for half a decade. 💜

Oh, and she still tries to prevent me from working whenever possible. 😹

My family definitely kept our decorations up until 1/6 (or later) but I’ve never heard the legend of the black cat. Have you?

One thing I know for sure, black cats are 100% good luck!

Whenever I write to my incarcerated pen pals, I share photos of Peach, Jonesy, and whatever assorted kitties are in my home or my life. Don and Tony write back to tell us how much they enjoy the photos, sometimes even hanging them in their homes. They comment on the antics of my girls, tease me about my constant fostering, and tell me about pets they’ve had and who they hope to have in the future.

So, needless to say, Peach and Jonesy have learned a lot about dismantling carceral and punitive systems over the years. If I can’t convince you to make a contribution to my pen pals’ commissary funds for my birthday, perhaps their adorable faces can.
