We are so excited to welcome Dr. Heather Prochnow to our General Practice team!

Heather grew up in the Chicago suburbs with her family. She attended her first year of college at the University of Illinois before transferring to Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin where she graduated with a B.A. in Biology and Spanish. She then returned to Champaign-Urbana to attend veterinary school at the University of Illinois - ILL! INI! - and graduated in 2012. She practiced locally for a couple of years before moving to Virginia with Jasmine, her little beagle. She worked in the northern Virginia area for 8 years before then moving to Colorado in 2023 with her boyfriend Brian, Jasmine, and their two black cats, Monster and Dexter.
Heather's professional interests include senior/geriatric care, preventative medicine, and dentistry.
Outside of veterinary medicine, Heather is a triathlete and competes in long distance triathlons but her favorite athletic achievement is running a one mile race in an inflatable dinosaur costume! She also enjoys yoga, trail running, baking (though admittedly is very bad at it), and listening to true crime podcasts.

Welcome, Heather!

November is National Pet Cancer Awareness Month. Pets today have a better chance of being successfully treated for neoplasia and cancer than they did before, thanks to advances in early recognition, diagnosis, and treatment. And it all starts with regular check-ups with your veterinarian. Here are a few warning signs to know: http://bit.ly/2OenYrc

Meet Mr. Mowglie! Our November Pet Of The Month!

Mowglie Jameson is an English Mastiff that is 6 months old. Mowglie owns all the heart strings to everyone he meets. He gets out of the truck and is so happy to see everyone! When Mowglie sees people he pretty much demands attention. He is a very sensitive guy!

We are so honored to be able to be part of Mowglie's care!

Happy Vet Tech Week! 🐾
These vet techs do not get enough credit for the behind the scenes work they do! From cleaning kennels, to taking x-rays, to picking up p**p, drawing blood, to staying after hours, it isn’t a glamorous job! They do it because their passion is your pets!
Please help us recognize the hard work they put into each and every day! We love them!

Welcome our Urgent Care Veterinarian, Sammie Haggard, DVM!

From playing hospital with her stuffed animals as a child, Sammie has always known she was destined to be a veterinarian. After being born and raised in Hong Kong, she moved solo to Sydney, Australia where she underwent her undergraduate and Doctorate degrees. Her career has mostly been concentrated mostly in emergency medicine, but her other passions include diagnostic imaging. She has two cats of her own, Aspen and Opal, who travelled with her all the way from down under. Opal has been blind since rescue and particularly enjoys staring at walls and hiding from her pesky brother.

In her free time, Sammie enjoys anything to do with a body of water and the sunshine - whether it be ocean swimming, kayaking, soaking, or paddling. Since recently moving to Colorado, she's particularly enjoyed getting introduced to hiking at altitude and snow sports. When the weather gets too cold, you can find her seeking warmth in a sauna or curled up somewhere with a good fantasy book.

We are so excited for her to join our team! Please welcome her to our family if you see her!

October is National Pet Wellness Month! A great opportunity to check your pets overall wellness and make sure you are ready for the holidays!

Here are a few tips to think about when scheduling your pets' next appointment:

Annual exams. Pets should visit the veterinarian at least once a year. Annual exams are a great opportunity to check on their overall health. You should also review their vaccination status, especially if you might board your pets for the holiday season. Call us to find out if your pets are updated on vaccines, or log into the PetDesk App!

Spay/neuter. Not only do the procedures prevent individual medical problems such as mammary and testicular tumors and uterine infections, spaying or neutering also helps curb pet overpopulation and reduces the number of unwanted pets who are euthanized every day. Spay and neuter surgeries are recommended at our clinic between 8-12 months of age depending on the size of your pet.

Weight management. According to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention, veterinarians classified 53 percent of adult dogs and 55 percent of cats were classified as overweight or obese. Prevention is much easier to accomplish than treatment, so help pets get on the right diet and exercise regimen!

Balanced diet. Commercial dog and cat foods make it easy to provide a nutritionally balanced and complete diet. Dog and cat foods contain all of the different nutrients pets need in the appropriate quantities. It's very difficult to create a balanced and complete diet from people foods, but talk to your veterinarian for specific diet questions you may have.

Dental care. Evaluate teeth and oral health annually. We encourage to brush your pets' teeth. Unchecked, dental disease can lead to kidney problems or nutritional issues if the pet cannot adequately chew and digest food.

Senior pets. As animals age, their dietary requirements and their ability to digest certain foods changes. When pets grow older, they lose some ability to concentrate urine so they need to produce more, and therefore need more water intake. You can help at home by feeding pets better quality proteins and avoiding red meats like beef and beef by-products. Doing this will decrease the workload on the kidneys and help prevent diseases and health issues from developing.

Give us a call to schedule your pets' next appointment! And help us welcome Dr. Davies to our team; he would love to meet your awesome pets!

Meet our October Pet of the Month-Clifford!

Clifford is the best rescue boy! He was found on the streets in Colorado Springs and joined our family in 2019. He loves toys, swimming, walks and his brother Sully. Did we mention TOYS? His butt has the fastest wiggle butt in the west and has been known to "twerk" and do the shake his groove thang. He makes friends wherever he goes and is a neighborhood favorite. His favorite food is carrots, cauliflower and broccoli. His favorite treats are dehydrated bison liver and minnows. He is a typical sheepie and follows us pretty much everywhere! The world is a better place because Clifford is in it!

We are so excited to welcome Dr. Doug Davies to our practice! He is a wonderful vet with years of experience and we are so excited for him to be a part of our OVMC family! 🐶🐾🐱

Doug was born and raised in Eastern Colorado on a cattle ranch. He went to Colorado State University for undergraduate and veterinary school. He graduated in 1986 and worked in a clinic in southeast Denver and then worked in Michigan.

Him and his wife Kathy have four children, 10 grandchildren, and 3 dogs. They both enjoy time with the kids both here and in Michigan. He has done companion animal medicine in the Denver area for the past 20 years. He spent 10 years in Michigan.

He enjoys the people and pets that he works with on a daily basis. He enjoys both surgery and medicine.

Please give him a warm welcome when you stop by for a visit! 🥰

Creating a Veterinary Professional Associate (VPA) does not create more access to veterinarians. Instead of reducing the workload, it adds new layers of oversight and puts animals in danger. Colorado needs real solutions, not shortcuts.

Please vote "No" on Proposition 129! See attached weblink with all of the vital information about this bill that will be on our November ballots. Spread the word to all of your animal loving friends too. Ask us if you have any questions!

Veterinarians in Colorado are opposed to Proposition 129 and they are speaking out about it. Hear a local vet explain why adding a mid-level position will endanger animals and not result in better clinical outcomes for animals. Gain a new perspective on this critical issue and understand what is at....
