No amount of twist or unevenness is acceptable in a tree, horses backs deserve safe saddles that do not injure them. If you ever been told that your saddle tree has been comprised or broken, that saddle should never go on the back of a horse ever again!
We recently saw a saddle advertised with "bit of a "twist" " that was "fine for flat work or low level riding"
Saddle trees with any amount of twist are unsafe and inhumane to use on any horse for any reason.
The horses body and biomechanics will adapt to a twisted tree, no matter the activity it is being used for.
When we ask a horse to carry an asymmetrical tree we are asking their body to compensate for the asymmetry and to rebalance the saddle (and rider)
A twisted tree is dangerous, it is harmful, and it is completely unethical to sell or use even for lunging or breaking.
The only way to determine if a saddle tree is twisted is to have the panels removed and the tree inspected by someone qualified and or trained to do so.
Please consider your horse and other horses when selling or buying used saddles and have the saddle inspected before using it.
