So many of you have questions regarding the upcoming closure of Midway City Feed that I decided to pen an open letter to you all explaining how and why this is happening. You have overwhelmed us this week with your expressions of love and loss of this business. It is amazing that this one place has had such a profound impact on so many.
To all of you...
I am so, so very sorry this is happening. It's crushing for all of us to be going through this right now. It should never have happened. In case you don't know, Mr. Bill passed away several months ago. Shortly before he fell at home and could not come in anymore, I told him that I knew that the property was going to his daughters when his day came but I stated I felt vulnerable. He told me not to worry they will be fair. I believed him.
My sister-in-law chose to put the property up for sale before telling me they did so. A few days later I asked the broker about buying. They gave me 3 days, which was not enough time to secure funding. Then I was introduced to two incredible women who rescue condemned buildings. They were absolutely enchanted with the feedstore, and that same day put a cash offer in on my behalf. The broker stated they weren't accepting any more offers. A day or so later the girls increased the offer substantially and we were told they had already signed papers. So, in a nutshell I was a step behind.
The right thing to do would have been to not put it up for sale and give me the first chance to buy. Why they chose the direction they did is baffling. Marilyn told me "They just wanted to get rid of it." I can't begin to tell you how painful that was to hear. My father-in-law spent 60 years here building this business up, he loved this store. My husband worked here 25 years and quite literally died for it. How they could just kick a successful 80 yr business and their legacies to the curb like they did is a bitter pill to swallow.
I searched properties in the area to buy, yet prices and the parameters needed were out of reach. Leasing was a non-starter as hay and straw is combustible and no lessor would permit it because we couldn't be insured for fire. We've never had fire insurance here. And honestly, this building is Midway City Feed - it would have been difficult to put anywhere else. I just want you to know I really tried to save this wonderful place, but it just wasn't meant to be.
Every customer that comes in has a story about this place. They came as kids, brought their kids, all the help both Bills gave, Rocky & Vera the squirrels etc. It's amazing how many special memories were made and the people we touched.
As tough as this job has been, there has been a lot of laughter and incredible moments. I am grateful to have had a part to play. A new chapter is coming for me and I'm so ready to get off my feet and to see what is in store for the future.
There are so few businesses left like this one, the fact that we know our customers and truly care about them makes all the difference in the world. We will miss all of you.
