💚Avian Influenza (H5N1) has recently been confirmed in a variety of species including humans 🙂and cats🐱

🐱How are cats infected with H5N1?
Cats can be infected through ingestion of unpasteurized animal products like milk🥛and meat🍣including freeze-dried products. Additionally they can be infected through contact with people who have been in direct contact with infected cows🐮or poultry🐓

🐱What are the clinical signs?
Signs can often mirror other respiratory viruses and can include:
-oculonasal discharge
-lethargy
-fever
-decreased appetite
-neurologic signs

🐱What can pet parents do to protect their cats?
-avoid feeding unpasteurized animal products
-prevent contact with livestock and wildlife and follow sanitation measures if a pet owner has been in contact with these animals

🐱What should pet parents do if they are concerned about infection in their cat?
- Isolate the cat to decrease risk of transmission to other animals

🩷Whilst dogs show their happiness through wagging their tails 🐕cats communicate their happiness by purring 🐈 (but they also purr to self soothe if they are stressed!).
🐾The frequency of a cats purr, between 25 and 150 Hertz, has also been associated with the promotion of healing and some pain relief. Studies suggest that exposure to a cat’s purr can stimulate the production of endorphins and reduce stress in both cats and humans🐈‍⬛

🍁We know that little nose 🐶will be sniffing for scraps this holiday🦃so we wanted to share a few reminders for a fun and safe season:

🦃✅DO let guests know not to feed pets foods from the table
Especially if they’re expert beggars! Some foods we enjoy on are unhealthy for dogs🐩and cats🐈

🦮✅DO alert guests if your pet is an escape artist
With all the comings and goings of the holiday🎆make ensure they’re microchipped and wearing ID collars, just in case.

🧡✅DO let your pet know you’re thankful for them🐶♥️😻
Offer extra special treats and spend time playing or exercising with them before friends and family arrive to make sure they get a chance to expend some energy.

🍗❌DON’T give pet’s table scraps especially turkey drumsticks
Not only are the bones a choking hazard, but fatty foods can cause pancreatitis in dogs and cats.

🗑️❌DON’T leave food or trash unattended
The aroma of roasted turkey and all the trimmings are hard for most pets to resist – even for ones who don’t normally counter surf or dig through trash.
