Holy Smoke and daughter Lily.
eMDee’s Silk Flashback is a trail pony deluxe! Point and go. This beautiful gelding could be someone’s dream horse.
Junior and Flash having a good workout today despite summer-like heat…but we are manifesting fall for the new trails we’ve been putting in on our farm here at Bramble & Vine.
Normally, I like to do “fun letters home”, light hearted play by play from the horse’s perspective. This week for Lily, I thought maybe better to dive in more thoughtfully. Lily has loads of natural talent, she loves to go fast, her gait is easy for her. What Lily lacks is true self carriage, flexibility and balance. She wants to brace against the bit, go faster than she has the balance for, shift her back around rather than engage, and lacks flexibility through her neck and shoulders. And so, we must do the boring stuff: stop. go. bend. change direction. repeat. It becomes an exercise like “wax on. wax off.” Push, bend, support, release. Until she begins to seek the release, reaching down and stretching and loosening all those bracey-tight areas, she won’t be ready to truly work on the bit. This is the difference between forced gaited frame and self carrying gaited frame and ultimately a strong and flexible thoracic sling vs a compensating and tense thoracic sling. What Lily will be doing for the next couple of weeks is lots of transition work, whether it be trail or rail….and the goal? Surprisingly, not perfect head set with a perfect gait. #1 goal is reach down and ultimate relaxation on the buckle walk with a long loose stride! Wax on. Wax off. 😉
