This. 100%. When a new horse comes in for training and has an “attitude”, we let the herd work for us first, and observe the dynamic.
When two foals were born at the same time this season, the filly foal was quiet and friendly and the c**t was standoffish. Somewhat a reflection of their mothers. Rather than forcing myself on the c**t, or feeling like I didn’t care for his temperament, I gave him his space. Letting him play with his sister and learning social cues from the herd. Now at 3 months, he’s the bigger lovebug of the two! Nothing on my part other than engaging him if he was interested and going about my business if he wasn’t.
Horses need to learn from other horses, and a good Boss mare is worth her weight in gold!
