UPDATE 10/6: DOG HAS BEEN REUNITED WITH THEIR FAMILY!

🚨 FOUND DOG 🚨

A Golden Retriever (neutered male, approx. 8 years old) was brought to early this morning (around 5:30 AM) by a Good Samaritan who found him wandering near the intersection of SR-39 and U.S. 20 in LaPorte.

He was not found near any homes, and a scan showed no microchip. He’s well-mannered, knows basic commands, and appears to be in good health. We plan to contact the LaPorte County Shelter tomorrow if no owner comes forward.

If you believe this is your dog, please reach out to EVCC Westville with proof of ownership at (219) 785-7300!

🚨 : Cleo & Piper’s Close Call 🚨

Recently, sisters Cleo (the black and white cat) and Piper (the Tabby) found themselves in a dangerous situation after their owners discovered an empty bottle of their dog’s chewable on the floor. The 15 remaining tablets were gone. While safe for dogs when prescribed, Apoquel can cause serious, and even fatal, kidney failure in cats.

Both cats were hospitalized right away at . Thankfully, Piper responded quickly to treatment and never developed kidney value elevation and was able to go home within 48 hours. However, Cleo’s baseline kidney values were elevated, so she required 72 hours of hospitalization with IV fluids and a urinary catheter for close monitoring. Thankfully, her values began to stabilize with treatment, so she was allowed to go home with continued care.

Today, both Cleo and Piper are thriving at home, and Cleo’s most recent recheck showed her kidney values are beginning to normalize! 👏

Their story is a reminder that the new chewable Apoquel formulation seems to be highly palatable to cats. Please keep ALL medications stored securely and out of reach of both cats and dogs, because even a curious taste can quickly turn into an !

We’re so thankful this story has a happy ending, and grateful to their quick-acting owners who brought them in right away. 🖤🤎

⚠️ ALERT: Keep dog and cat medications separate, and out of curious paws!

Following the release of flavored chewable Apoquel tablets for dogs in October 2023, the Pet Poison Helpline reported a 299% increase in accidental exposures in the following year. Of the symptomatic cases between January 2022 and November 2024, 63 involved cats.

Meds like Apoquel are safe for dogs in prescribed quantities, but can be dangerous or even deadly for cats!

✅ Store all medications in secure containers
✅ Double-check which pet a med is prescribed for
✅ Call your closest or the Pet Poison Helpline immediately if your cat accidentally ingests dog medication

A little caution can prevent serious accidents. and keep all your pets safe. 💙
