Important information, please read.

As many of you may have heard, top veterinary specialists across the country have been investigating a “mysterious respiratory illness” in dogs presenting similar symptoms to kennel cough, but they can last much longer, and in very rare cases prove fatal. Please don’t panic as this represents a small amount of dogs throughout the country. We have not been made aware of any of our clients having any symptoms.

The infected dogs develop a cough, fever, lethargy and intermittent loss of appetite. Kennel cough is a fairly common, easily transmitted airborne infection in dogs. It is both viral and bacterial and can show symptoms from mild to severe. Dogs that spend a great deal of time with other dogs in parks, groomers, or at daycare/boarding facilities. Veterinarians said the undetermined illness has led to hospitalizations and the deaths of older dogs or those with health issues.

Though there is no official count of the number of infections, veterinarians said they have treated more dogs with these symptoms in the last few months. Cases have been reported in a few states but experts suspect that the illness is much more widespread.

Experts are unsure whether this illness is caused by a bacteria or virus. It is very likely airborne and spread easily from dog to dog. Some veterinarians hypothesize that it could be viral because the dogs they have treated have not responded to antibiotics.
We’re really hoping by getting the word out that people are more diligent and becoming more informed. The veterinary community as a whole is concerned. If you feel your dog is sick, please call your veterinarian and do not bring your dog to socialize or board.
