It’s hot outside.

A shot of both hives this morning. Busy bees.

The girls are fanning their wings trying to keep the hive cool. The ones at the bottom are just hanging outside complaining about how hot it is. 🐝😎

So on the 20th of last month, I did a hive inspection. I found that my hive had a couple of queen cells in it. At the urging of my beeautiful wife Cynthia, I took the frame with the queen cells and eggs and larvae and put it in the empty hive. 11 days later it appears that the split worked. We now have 2 hives!

In this video I go into the hive to see if it's time to add a super. What I found was a bit of a surprise.

“Cleansing flight” because “stepping outside to take a whizz” isn’t politically correct! 😆🐝

In today’s video, we check in on hives. One is abandoned (again) and the other is booming.

Lots of activity in the left hive, so I just kept the camera on it. The right hive doesn’t seem to be near as active.

Here, you can see the girls bringing in white pollen. They are hard workers.

Note to self: Sugar Water is Sticky. That is all.

Lots of activity in the Apiary this morning.

Southern Dewberry is one of the many plants around the apiary. The girls really seem to like them.

In this video, I am installing an entrance feeder on a hive. Sorry about the sound quality as sometime I am speaking while I’m not close to the camera.

Well, apparently swarm season is upon us. Both of our previously abandoned hives seem to have new occupants.

Today I took a peek into our hive to check on our wild colony of bees. I regret to say that the colony that had taken up residence with us has frozen to death. Earlier this season before the cold hit, I gave them some sugar because there was almost no stores. They ate some of the sugar, but apparently a lack of food and the cold weather got the better of them. On the bright side, I’ll be able to use the old comb in my swarm traps.🙁

Great News! The small wild colony of bees that took over one of our abandoned hives is still alive. I peeked in the top of the hive this morning and they have started eating the sugar I put on the top of the frames. There doesn’t seem to be a whole lot of bees, but they are still in the box, moving and eating. 🐝

Took a look in our recently re-populated hive this morning. After lifting the top and having a look, there were only a few bees in the super and there was no drawn comb. It was in really bad shape so I took off the entire super to expose the bees in the top of the second deep. Upon investigating, it appeared that the bees had only reclaimed half of the hive. I pulled up a few frames on the right hand side and there was zero activity. That was strange to me, but bees never read the bee books. I reassembled the hive with a brand new honey super on the top to replace the old nasty one in hopes they will start to build comb and store honey. My intention is to replace the old frames in the bottom boxes with new ones to see if that will entice them to use the entire box.

As I was walking by an abandoned hive in the apiary yesterday, I saw some activity around the door. I saw bees taking in pollen. Could it be that bees had taken up residence in the palatial condo we had built? As it turns out, we did indeed have new colony move in! These pictures are of frames that I pulled from the top box of a double deep configuration. That leads me to believe that there are more babies and resources in the bottom box.
Gives new meaning to the phrase: “If you build it, they will come.”

Went into the hives today for the first time this season. Our newest hive is still eating the sugar we fed them to help survive winter, so I just left it on and let them eat. I’ll put the the frames on in about a week. Our older hive has almost completely filled up one super with capped honey. I put a new super on, and moved a frame of capped honey into it to entice the girls to start building comb and storing honey in it.
