Humans routinely brush away the daily plaque attached to their teeth. Dogs and cats cannot brush their own teeth, and due to the difficulty, very few pet parents brush for them. The good news is that there are other ways to effectively decrease the accumulation of plaque that does not involve tooth brushing.
Dental diets, wipes, chews, and water additives can help in the overall goal of decreasing plaque buildup, preventing painful periodontal disease. Some water additives combine with calcium and phosphorus in saliva to decrease tartar, while others place a safe film over the teeth decreasing plaque growth.

What happens if a puppy’s baby teeth are still present when the permanent teeth begin to erupt? The term persistent deciduous tooth is used to describe a baby tooth that is not shed when its permanent tooth counterpart erupts.
Persistent baby teeth often cause trauma to the soft tissues of the mouth. Removing the offending baby teeth eliminates the pain created by the baby teeth contacting the palate. A persistent baby tooth should be removed as soon as the crown of the permanent tooth is visible above the gingival margin.
