Impulse Control
Ellie the bulldog learning the “Leave It” command and working on some impulse control.
This beautiful girl really enjoys saying hi to guests in the form of body slamming into them and leaving claw marks all over them.
Like most dogs who jump on guests out of excitement, they were never taught that there’s another way to greet them when they come in.
Bringing it back to the basics with “Place” and “Leave It” and great starting points to get some basic impulse control down, this session was the first time we tried “Leave It” and as you can see, it’s requiring a lot of brain power from her. The owners also have a 2 year old daughter who drops a lot of food on the ground, so you can imagine how hard it was for her to just not immediately go for the treats.
The basics of dog training are often overlooked and people think that because they aren’t a puppy anymore that they shouldn’t be doing the basics.
Keep it simple, keep the communication clear and don’t over complicate things for you and your dog.
Great work Ellie!!
One of my dogs Kaya gets anxious with transitions and settling into a new place, especially when her brother isn’t with her.
Instead of having her pace around and get even more anxious, I set up a cot and have her “Place” on it until she calms down, and then she is free to go and do what she pleases.
This is a time lapse video of close to 10 minutes, but you can really see her gradually get less anxious to the point of resting her head and just hanging out.
Place has many uses for your dog! Teaching them a solid “Place” command is an excellent tool for any dog owner to have.
