The not-do-secret to our cutie bouties…

Texture! Our style is all about different seasonal textures and the magical way they have of telling the story of a time and place. This particular boutonnière tells the story of spring in New England when the daffodils are blooming, grape hyacinths are starting to emerge and the lilacs are sadly nearly on their way out. These ingredients collided for a few days to make this baby.

If you’re looking for flowers that tell a story too, we’d love to chat!

Here’s your sign that it’s ok to slow down sometimes.

I’ve made some big decisions at RF over the last few months. Mainly that I would wind down the retail side of things at least for now to focus on the part of the business that brings me the most joy and is actually sustainable.

While I’d planted thousands of tulips, I truly had no need or bandwidth to harvest them all. So I didn’t. I let them bloom out for the bees and the creatures and even a little bit for myself. I don’t often get to enjoy my flowers in their full glory like this. It’s brought me so much joy.

What initially felt like a failure or a big loss turned out to be just fine. Maybe I’ll be back to the rush of Mother’s Day and slinging weekly bouquets in the future, but for now getting back to the love of the game was the right call. I feel so excited for all the big days I get to have a tiny hand in this year.

So if there’s something that you’re holding on to even though you know it’s not working for you, I encourage you to reconsider.

If you plan to preserve your bouquet, remember this one thing…

Flowers need water! So whenever you’re not holding your blooms, pop them back in a vase with water. It’s the absolute best way to keep your bouquet fresh all day and on its way to your preservationist.

Also try to avoid popping your bouquet down on tables and other hard surfaces because petals (especially on lighter colored flowers) can bruise. Lastly, avoid direct sunlight and heat on your blooms whenever possible. It’s a lot, but well worth it to get the best piece possible!

When you're searching for florists, you might come across the term "seasonal" a lot and wonder what exactly it means.

Around here, it means using flowers that bloom together around the time of year that they naturally do so.

While it's always exciting to experiment, the look that I’m most drawn to creating is inspired by the garden. This time of year, the patch is bursting with specialty tulips, which make a fantastic focal (or main) flower in bouquets and centerpieces. These are a few of the double and peony tulip varieties that have bloomed in April. Do these look like the tulips you're used to?

My best tip for getting *the* bouquet shot 📸?

Ask your florist how to hold it! While bouquets are designed to look good from any angle (but *WHY* are they always upside down in pics?!?!), your florist will probably design with a “front” in mind.

Here at Rumphius Farms, our bouquets are designed to look best from this angle—what I call “bang on”—where the bouquet is tilted forward 45 degrees or more. This orientation reveals the various heights and textures that we so carefully design for you.

“I don’t like roses.” I hear this All. The. Time. And I get it, the roses that we commonly see in landscaping or at the checkout line come in a pretty basic range of colors and shapes.

BUT there’s a whole other world of roses out there. Many, many varieties have been bred to retain the best characteristics of heritage roses like fragrance or lots and lots of petals (I’m talking 120 petals!) while being more vigorous and disease resistant. Behold this David Austin rose in Pantone’s color of the year! See what I mean?

The first batch of garden roses in the patch is turning three. I’m hoping that means lots of blooms that I can sneak into designs.

Garden style…what’s that?

While it’s very much an I’ll-know-it-when-I-see-it-quality, it generally means:

🌸 An organic shape. Garden style bouquets and arrangement are the messy bun and natural makeup of of the flower world—an “effortless look” achieved by applying a lot of effort.

🌸 Lots of texture. For gardens to “work,” that is, for them to look vibrant, attract beneficial creatures, and be in bloom for the whole growing season, they’re planted with many varieties. The same principle applies to garden-style design. Where Coco Chanel said remove a piece of jewelry before you leave the house, garden style say add another zinnia.

🌸 Seasonal ingredients. Ehhh, this is a loose guideline, but generally you want flowers that would naturally bloom together. So, no tropicals with tulips (unless, of course, you’re purposely trying to push the envelope)!

Today marks the start of my 37th trip around the sun.

I’m walking into this next go with what feels like a very different life. I’m now a single mom with a blossoming business that I have such big ideas for. It’s definitely not where I thought I’d be, but for the first time in a long time, I have complete faith that it’ll all work out. With a lot of gratitude in my heart for you, who’ve supported me through this evolution in big and small ways, I offer these nuggets of 37th birthday wisdom:

1. Change can *really* suck, but it’s the only way to make room.

2. Really believe that you are worthy of good things, and good things will come. You’ll be better at both discovering them and accepting them into your life. 2a. Don’t ever be the one to tell yourself no about a good thing.

3. Just keep going. Whatever it is. If you feel in your heart that it’s for you and you can see it clearly, that’s all you need. You will find the way because you know exactly where you’re going. No one else needs to understand it but you. Be consistent and you’ll get there.

I say all this not having a specific achievement in mind, but having learned that there is *a lot* of joy and fulfillment in chasing a dream. So, if you’ve ever tapped that little heart thing, if you followed me when I was an anonymous little ranunculus corm, if you bought a bouquet from a cart on my lawn or a booth at a market, if you let me come to your house to drop off flowers, if you rooted for me, if you let me talk your ear off about dahlia tubers, and especially if you trusted me on one of your most special days, thank you, thank you, thank you, and cheers to another year growing and hanging out together 💕.

IT’S TIME! Yep, it’s time to order your holiday wreath! For real!

*One week only* I’m offering a handful of discounted preorders. Prices are going back to normal next Wednesday. I’m doing this to cover some of my upfront costs for making wreaths and swags for the . I’ve updated the website with three options:

1. The Cora Wreath: this is the classic wreath pictured here with a mix of fir, boxwood, and other seasonal greens plus cinnamon sticks and pine cones. This year I’m using burnt orange ribbon.

2. The Mystery Wreath: this is exactly what it sounds like. I’m buying in some interesting ingredients like berries and maybe orange slices and I’m going to get creative. If you have an adventurous spirit and are up for a surprise, pick this one.

3. The Mystery Swag: just like the mystery wreath, but in swag form.

All wreaths are about 22 inches across and come with a ribbon for hanging. Get one now or find me at Kilroy Square the last weekend of November and the first weekend of December!

And that’s a wrap! Tonight was my very last harvest from the field this year. After this weekend, I’m taking the mower to it and starting on the fall tasks. To say that I was overzealous with my spring orders is…an understatement.

I haven’t shown much of the field on here because, honestly, the weeds got away from me. It’s been a busy season in both life and business, and we can only do our best, right? The constant rain, a little bit of luck, and letting go of my ideas of what I should be doing have kept the plants cranking enough that I’ll be at Kilroy tomorrow for our last market before a triple header wedding weekend! As always, thanks for being being here.

Eat your whole grains. Or, OR, put them in your cut flower bouquets 🧐.

This is amaranth. I’m pretty sure it’s marketed as an “ancient grain” elsewhere. Here it’s “the green hanging one out there.” It can get really big, but I found that tighter spacing made it a great size for florist use. I think I need another year to observe it before it starts featuring heavily in any event proposals, but I think it’s a keeper.

This has come into bloom over the last few weeks as well as the dahlias.

While I’ve been away from social, I’ve been busy behind the scenes harvesting, delivering subscription bouquets, writing up 2024 proposals, and sourcing hard goods and flowers for our fall weddings, kicking off with K+J next week! It’s mid August, but it feels like the season is just warming up!

June is such a weird month for flowers! The spring flowers like these ranunculus kick the bucket and the summer flowers aren’t quite ready. The bad bugs like aphids start to get out of control, and the weeds absolutely take off. It’s an in between time that I’m starting to fill with peonies and spike flowers.

While the peonies have come, this weird weather has the spike flowers and the whole rest of the patch easily three weeks behind. So…I won’t be at the Weymouth Farmer’s Market this weekend, but I hope to be back on track for out market schedule starting with Kilroy Square on June 16!

If you ever feel like you need a lesson in humility, I encourage you to grow Icelandic poppies or ask a young child if you’re doing a good job 🙃.

So…I won’t have a ton of poppies this year, but the ones that *are* coming are looking AH-MA-ZING!

These are Colibri, or hummingbird, poppies and they have the sturdiest stems I have ever seen. They seemed to appreciate a thick layer of compost and an early start in a shady spot.

Would you expect this droopy alien pod to produce the most spectacular flower you’ve ever seen???

Come see me at the Rockland Open Air Market, which has been moved to Sunday due to the rain tomorrow. I’ll have ranunculus and mixed bunches.

In other news, I’m up to something really cool today. Stay tuuuuuuned…

Holy cow, what an insane and amazing day! Mother’s Day is the Super Bowl of the flower world and it’s no joke.

I managed to get exactly zero pictures of the Mother’s Day bouquets that went out today 🤦‍♀️, but they were stunners and I can’t thank you enough for your support. It allows me create beauty and bring joy, and it’s the very, very best.

In true diva fashion, the first trickle of ranunculus showed up this morning, and I was up with the birds cutting it before the heat of the day for today’s deliveries. Here they are with a very tired and grateful lady.

April showers bring May flowers *and* a much needed day stuck inside submitting next year’s bulb orders.

The rule of thumb is that you buy next year’s bulbs as this year’s bulbs begin to bloom. I’m obviously a little behind since the tulips are nearly done. Honestly, I needed to know whether there was demand for Weymouth-grown tulips before committing to growing several thousand more. Thank you so much for showing me that there is!

I lost out on some varieties, but there will still be crates on crates of gorgeousness getting planted this fall to share with you in the spring.

We’ll be back at the Rockland Open Air Market this Saturday, May 6. Expect more tulip mania while we wait for the ranunculus to start cranking.

They’re coming!!!

I’m starting the season out at the Rockland Open Air Market on April 22, aka Earth Day, which is the exact day that I had my first tulip last year. I’m crossing my fingers that these are a *touch* earlier. Rest assured that I’ll provide constant updates on this epic gamble 😂. Sometimes you just have to go for it.

We’ll definitely be swimming in tulips by May to fill our Mother’s Day preorders and subscriptions (both still available)!

Happy Sunday! Is time feeling extra weird to you too?

It’s time to start the summer flowers before the tulips are even blooming. And it all feels…too soon?

Behind the scenes right now there’s a lot of sowing seeds in trays, babying seedlings, being on tulip and ranunculus bud watch, weeding, watering, and ordering too many dahlias 🙈 (but they’re going to be so pretty!). I’m also trying to figure out our farmer’s market season so that I can share all of these awesome flowers.

This is the most exciting time of the season for me, personally. I love the flowers when they’re here and I fall in love with every single variety as it comes up. But the anticipation and hope that comes with planting is extra special.
