The Obenour Team had a great time at the National Pole Bending Championships in Columbiana this past weekend.

OEC Redneck TrninTrix and Chad placed in the 2D Futurity all weekend and ended up winning the average and the sidepot. Ran 20.9 on Friday and 20.8 on Saturday.

Superfames Bunny and Chad had a rough start on Friday but ran a 20.8 on Saturday placing 2D2 in the Futurity class.

Redneck Ho**er and Chad won 4D1 on Friday with a 21.6 and one out of placing with another 21.6 on Saturday.

NHF Lucky Shine and Heidi ran some killer times but only came out with one clean run on Saturday and placing in open 3D and adult 2D with a 20.7. They also ran there first NPBA money run with a 20.4 and knocked and also ran a 20.2 in bobble poles but her foot managed to knock one over.

Hot Mess Jess and Kayler had a beautiful run on Sunday running 21.2 and a little tough luck on Saturday.

Celine Orlynx and Kayler hit their personal best on Saturday with a 22.2 in poles and had a bit of tough luck Sunday.

We had a great time at a great show. We look forward to this show every year. We are grateful for every run we get down the alleyway with the horses we have. Thank you Chip, Lisa, Bailey and Jen for all your hard work in putting this show together and making it amazing!!

Thank you also to Laura, Jessica and Alicia and everyone else that pitched in and took care of the farm while we were gone. We couldn’t do this without you!

Congratulations Chad Obenour on winning the 2D Futurity with OEC Redneck TrninTrix!

Just got back from The Battle for the Bluegrass in Liberty Kentucky. Bryan Isham put on one amazing show as usual with 133 in Poles and 323 in Barrels on Saturday. Lots of fun with wonderful people!

We are proud of every horse we ran down that alley way. OEC Redneck TrninTrix and Superfames Bunny ran great runs in the Futurity with Trixie winning the 2D and Rancher in the 2D just out of money.

Redneck Ho**er was on board placing 2D3 in Master Barrels on Friday with Chad and winning 2D Open Poles on Sunday with Kayler.

Hot Mess Jess had some beautiful runs with Kayler but fell just outside of the money. We are always excited to watch this team!

NHF Lucky Shine (Rock) with the legs of a pony, body of a horse and heart of a champion WON the 2D Barrel Finals Shootout with the run below. Heidi and Rock made it back to both barrels and poles finals Saturday night and he was in it to win it in barrels. They also placed 2D3 in Open Poles and Barrels and 1D4 in Masters and 1D2 Masters on Sunday.

We couldn’t be more blessed to own these horses and are honored for each and every run we have with them.

Things your riding instructor wants you to know:
1. This sport is hard. You don't get to bypass the hard…..every good rider has gone through it. You make progress, then you don't, and then you make progress again. Your riding instructor can coach you through it, but they cannot make it easy.

2. You're going to ride horses you don't want to ride. If you're teachable, you will learn from every horse you ride. Each horse in the barn can teach you if you let them. IF YOU LET THEM. Which leads me to…

3. You MUST be teachable to succeed in this sport. You must be teachable to succeed at anything, but that is another conversation. Being teachable often means going back to basics time and time and time again. If you find basics boring, then your not looking at them as an opportunity to learn. Which brings me to…..

4. This sport is a COMMITMENT. Read that, then read it again. Every sport is a commitment, but in this sport your teammate weighs 1200 lbs and speaks a different language. Good riders don't get good by riding every once in awhile….they improve because they make riding a priority and give themsevles opportunity to practice.

5. EVERY RIDE IS AN OPPORTUNITY. Even the walk ones. Even the hard ones. Every. Single. Ride. Remember when you just wished someone would lead you around on a horse? Find the happiness in just being able to RIDE. If you make every ride about what your AREN'T doing, you take the fun out of the experience for yourself, your horse, and your instructor. Just enjoy the process. Which brings me to...

6. Riding should be fun. It is work. and work isn't always fun.....but if you (or your rider) are consistently choosing other activities or find yourself not looking forward to lessons, it's time to take a break. The horses already know you don't want to be here, and you set yourself up for failure if you are already dreading the lesson before you get here.

7. You'll learn more about horses from the ground than you ever will while riding. That's why ground lessons are important, too. If you're skipping ground lessons (or the part of your lesson that takes place on the ground), you're missing out on the most important parts of the lesson. You spend far more time on the ground with horses than you do in the saddle.

8. Ask questions and communicate. If you're wondering why your coach is having you ride a particular horse or do an exercise, ask them. Then listen to their answer and refer to #3 above.

9. We are human beings. We make decisions (some of them life and death ones) every day. We balance learning for students with workloads for horses and carry the bulk of this business on our shoulders. A little courtesy goes a long way.

Of all the sports your child will try through their school years, riding is one of 3 that they may continue regularly as adults (golf and skiing are the others). People who coach riding spend the better part of their free time and much of their disposable income trying to improve their own riding and caring for the horses who help teach your child. They love this sport and teaching others…..but they all have their limits. Not all good riders are good coaches, but all good coaches will tell you that the process to get good is not an easy one.

The babies really showed up this past weekend!! To say we are impressed is an understatement. Superfames Bunny has been the most challenging horse to start, but she is really understanding her purpose now, OEC Redneck TrninTrix was born on our barn out of BS Sharp Trick and Wheel Redneck-That , she is one of smartest babies we have born and raised. CN Gator Made is owned by Lorraine King and he is smart, willing to learn quickly, huge heart and just a beast, training him was so much fun. I am very happy with how far he has come.

Garrett, Heidi, and Kayler ran and had a great weekend as well. Heidi ran a 20.6 on NHF Lucky Shine in Poles placing 6th overall in poles out of some stiff competition, running her personal fastest. Garrett ran great with Redneck Ho**er on Friday but gave us a huge scare on Saturday with a trip to the hospital. Garrett is doing well now.

Fun facts about horses in this cold weather. Stay warm out there! 🥶

Fun facts about horses in this cold weather. Stay warm out there! 🥶

FUN FACT FRIDAY! Are you familiar with the many adaptations that help your horse stay warm during the cold winter months?

🌾 Hindgut digestion of hay produces the most heat, acting as a small furnace inside of the horse. This is why free choice, good quality hay is so important in the winter.

💪 Horses have a huge muscle mass and muscle activity produces heat. This includes running and playing and even shivering if their body temperature starts to drop. It is important to remember that these activities also will result in a bigger caloric demand so free choice hay and in some cases, grain, is often needed.

🧥 To blanket or not to blanket is a constant debate but either way, as it starts to get cold your horse will grow a thicker coat. If you decide to leave your horse unblanketed you may notice that they look “fluffy”. This is due to a phenomenon called piloerection where the hair stands up to better trap air within. Two layers of the coat also help with warmth. The inner layer is softer and has air pockets to create an insulating layer. The outer layer is coarse and has oils that keep moisture from penetrating the insulating layer and keep the horse warm.

⚖️ Wild horses go into the winter heavier than ideal and the fat serves as an extra layer of insulation. However, if a horse is going to be kept heavily blanketed and in a barn during the cold weather months this is unnecessary and can lead to obesity related issues.

🦵Their distal limbs (below the knees and hocks) are made of mostly bones and tendons, tissues that are resistant to the cold temperatures.

🦶The hooves have an alternative route of blood circulation through larger vessels that can be used in low temperatures. This is why horses can stand in snow without detrimental effects.

👃A horse’s nose has a robust blood supply and is rounded so that it is less susceptible to frostbite than a human’s nose.

Here’s to the owners who are outside every couple of hours to monitor their horses’ health in these frigid temps.

Here’s to the owners who are checking waterers for ice. Here’s to the owners who are freezing their fingers to hang up their hose, or bringing hoses inside their house to keep from freezing.

Here’s to the owners switching blankets, double blanketing, or cleaning out shelters for their unblanketed horses. Here’s to the owners who are worried if their horse is staying warm enough with or without their blanket.

Here’s to the owners who are throwing countless flakes of loose hay out while making sure the round bale feeders don’t go empty.

Here’s to the owners praying that equipment starts, and hydraulics work smoothly. Here’s to the owners who figure it out when the equipment fails you.

Here’s to the messy mud room, filled with winter bibs, charged heated vests, boot dryers plugged in, and headlamps charged. Here’s to the countless pairs of gloves you have to swap out each time you venture outside.

Here’s to the rigorous training schedules, riding lessons, and busy barn coming to a halt. Here’s to putting the health of the animal’s first.

Here’s to the part of horse management that isn’t so glamorous. Thank you for all you are doing for the safety and wellbeing of your horses during this time.

Here’s to all of us ❄️🩵
