Patient Update: Duke!

Remember this handsome boy? For those that don't know his story, Duke initially came to see Dr. Windsor for suspected neck pain in March of 2023. An MRI revealed an intraventricular tumor. Dr. Swift and the radiation oncology team quickly got involved! We have been seeing Duke back for a recheck MRI every 6 months to follow the progress of the tumor, and over a year later, we are happy to report that the tumor has shrunk even more!

We will see him back in another 6 months to check in!

Fireworks can be a source of anxiety and fear for many dogs, so it's essential to take steps to keep them safe during fireworks displays. Here are some tips for keeping your dog safe during fireworks:

1. Keep your dog indoors: If possible, keep your dog indoors during fireworks displays. It will help reduce their exposure to the loud noises and bright lights.

2. Create a safe space: Create a safe space for your dog to retreat to during fireworks displays. This could be a quiet room with their bed, toys, and water bowl.

3. Provide distractions: Provide your dog with distractions to help keep them calm during fireworks displays. This could include toys, treats, or puzzle toys.

4. Use calming aids: Consider using calming aids, such as a Thundershirt or calming supplements or medications, to help reduce your dog's anxiety during fireworks displays. If your dog needs medications, CALL YOUR VET NOW.

5. Stay with your dog: If possible, stay with your dog during fireworks displays to provide comfort and reassurance.

6. Exercise your dog: Before fireworks displays, get your dog plenty of exercise to help tire it out and reduce anxiety.

7. Keep identification up to date: Ensure your dog's identification tags and microchip information are updated in case they become scared and run away during fireworks displays.

Following these tips can help keep your dog safe and comfortable during fireworks displays.

Behind the Scenes - MRI

Did you know animals can undergo MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) scans like humans? MRI is a non-invasive imaging technique that uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves to create detailed images of the body's internal structures.

Here are some critical points about dogs undergoing MRI scans:

1. Reasons for MRI in animals: MRI scans are commonly used in veterinary medicine to diagnose and evaluate neurological disorders, brain and spinal cord injuries, tumors, and some soft tissue injuries.
2. Procedure: To ensure clear images during an MRI, patients must be under complete general anesthesia and lie still for 45 to 90 minutes.
3. Safety: MRI is generally safe for dogs, but precautions are still taken to ensure the animal's safety. Metal objects, such as collars, tags, and implants, can interfere with the MRI and must be removed before the scan.
4. Benefits: MRI provides detailed images of the animal's internal structures, helping veterinarians diagnose and plan treatment for various conditions. It is a valuable tool in veterinary diagnostics.

If you have a specific question or need more detailed information about MRI scans, feel free to contact our neurology department at 720-213-2720 or [email protected]!

Meet Iggy!

She is a 9-year-old Chug (chihuahua x pug mix) and recently saw Dr. Scott in our emergency department for a collapsing episode. An echocardiogram (heart ultrasound) showed chronic degenerative valve disease. The collapsing episode may represent a cardiac syncope episode from decreased cardiac output.

We started her on some medications and she back home with her family!

Our Story

COVID-19 UPDATE: Wheat Ridge Animal Hospital remains open to handle any of your emergency needs. To support this effort, we have adopted a curbside concierge service in our parking lot. We will greet clients outside to capture information about your pet's clinical needs at a physical distance and/or by phone. Once we have your pet registered, you may either remain in their car or leave and return later to pick up your pet. Part of the community since 1955. We started as a general practice and have grown to a unique hospital which combines the general practice, a specialty referral practice and a 24-hour emergency and critical care practice. Our clients rely on our dedicated team to provide excellent care for our patients, and first-class customer service to pet owners and their primary care veterinarians. We are very excited to be recognized as a 50-year member in 2013.
