Meet our new blood donor, Panda!

Pandora, AKA “Panda Pants,” is a 6-year-old Great Pyrenees Mix. She loves playing with her brothers, barking at other dogs, swimming, and camping. Her favorite games are playing tug of war, chasing her mom around the house, and destroying squeaky toys. She has now found another favorite activity; she LOVES coming to donate blood! She will run inside to see the blood bank girls.

Please help us welcome Panda Pants into our donor family

🌟 NEW DOCTOR ALERT 🌟

Please help us welcome our newest member of our General Practice Team, Dr. Gillian Holt!

Dr. Gillian Holt obtained her undergraduate degree at the College of William & Mary and went on to study at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine. After receiving her VMD, she continued her training with a rotating internship at Wheat Ridge Animal Hospital, learning from a variety of specialists.
She is a member of the General Practice Team.

Dr. Holt enjoys practicing general medicine and providing preventative care. She grew up with 7 cats, 2 dogs, 2 guinea pigs, and 2 frogs (both of her parents are also veterinarians) and she knew she wanted to be a vet from a young age. In her free time, she enjoys skiing, hiking, and spending time with her cat.

We are excited to have Dr. Holt be part of our WRAH family!

🌟 Wheat Ridge Animal Hospital, we believe that knowledge is key to ensuring the health and safety of our older patients. Before anesthesia, chest X-rays can help us detect hidden heart or lung conditions that may pose risks during procedures. This vital step allows us to tailor our anesthetic approach for your furry friend, ultimately leading to safer outcomes. 🐾❤️ Your pet's well-being is our top priority!

🐾 Meet Bear: Our Brave Pug! 🐾

Bear, a lovable pug, was recently hospitalized due to an anaphylactic reaction. Anaphylaxis is a severe and potentially life-threatening allergic response that can manifest rapidly, requiring immediate medical attention.

What Happened?
Bear displayed signs of respiratory distress, weakness, and pale mucous membranes, prompting urgent care. Fortunately, our dedicated veterinary team provided the necessary treatment, including fluids and medications, to stabilize him.

Understanding Anaphylaxis:
While dogs can experience mild allergic reactions, anaphylaxis is far more serious and can be triggered by various allergens, including environmental factors, food, medications, and vaccinations. Early recognition and treatment are key to saving lives.

Diagnostics
Your veterinarian may suspect anaphylaxis based on physical examination and clinical signs alone. Bloodwork and an abdominal ultrasound may help your veterinarian determine this diagnosis and monitor for complications to other organs from the anaphylaxis.

Treatment
Treatment for anaphylaxis involves fluids and other medications to treat shock and antihistamines to treat the primary allergic reaction.

After overnight hospitalization in our ICU, Bear was discharged, and he is back home! Thank you to our ER, Critical Care, and ICU teams for taking great care of him!

Bandit became a donor hero in 2018. At first, he wasn’t sure of his hero duties, but he quickly learned that saving lives was pretty amazing. Bandit trusted his Auntie Kendall, and he knew she would take great care of him. Over the years, when he would come to work with his mom, he would pull her over to the blood bank to see her. During his 6-year hero career, he donated 27 units and saved 53 lives!! WOW! Happy Retirement buddy!! We will miss you so much!! 🎉🍾

Meet Bradley 🐶❤️ She came in for an ultrasound before her surgery with Dr. Allen to remove a mast cell tumor. 🩺✨ Ultrasounds are an important pre-surgical diagnostic tool, helping us ensure there’s no metastasis (spread of cancer) before proceeding. We are glad to say that the ultrasound showed to spread of cancer and we were able to move forward with surgery! We're here to support Bradley every step of the way on her journey to recovery!

History and Folklore Fact of the Day: The Yule Cat!

The Yule Cat, or Jólakötturinn in Icelandic, is a legendary creature deeply rooted in Icelandic folklore and associated with the Christmas season. It is said to be a giant cat that prowls the countryside during the Yule season, specifically on Christmas Eve. According to the legend, the Yule Cat has a somewhat fearsome reputation; it is known to eat those who do not receive new clothes before Christmas.

The origins of the Yule Cat are tied to the old Icelandic tradition of rewarding people who worked hard during the year with new garments, particularly woolen clothing. Those who were lazy or did not complete their tasks would be left without new clothes and thus risked being devoured by this enormous feline.

This creature, often depicted as a massive, threatening cat, is the centerpiece of a cautionary tale that encourages people, especially children, to be industrious and diligent in their work. The Yule Cat is also linked to the Yule Lads, a group of mischievous figures in Icelandic folklore who visit children during the 13 nights leading up to Christmas.

Today, the Yule Cat is often used as a symbol of the festive season in Iceland, appearing in various forms of media and as a popular figure in Christmas decorations. It serves as a reminder of the importance of hard work and community spirit during the dark winter months, a message that resonates with many Icelanders!

Now you have a fun fact to show off during holiday festivities this week!

Our Story

COVID-19 UPDATE: Wheat Ridge Animal Hospital remains open to handle any of your emergency needs. To support this effort, we have adopted a curbside concierge service in our parking lot. We will greet clients outside to capture information about your pet's clinical needs at a physical distance and/or by phone. Once we have your pet registered, you may either remain in their car or leave and return later to pick up your pet. Part of the community since 1955. We started as a general practice and have grown to a unique hospital which combines the general practice, a specialty referral practice and a 24-hour emergency and critical care practice. Our clients rely on our dedicated team to provide excellent care for our patients, and first-class customer service to pet owners and their primary care veterinarians. We are very excited to be recognized as a 50-year member in 2013.
