After doing a little tracking this morning in the fresh snow, I have confirmation that a bobcat is killing my chickens. I have lost about 15 over the last month. These tracks are about 2 inches wide by 2.5 inches long. More disturbing is that I also found the tracks outside the barn of where the baby goats live. Needless to say, the door will be secured and locked at night from now on.

It’s that time of the year to take the Kakai pumpkins (middle shelf in pic) I grew last summer out of cold storage and harvest the hulless seeds. I shake on some sea salt and toast them for 10 minutes at 350F. Yes! These are the same green pumpkins seeds you get at the store (and much bigger and tastier). The pumpkin meat of this pumpkin is not so tasty— but goats are happy to recycle them! Don’t forget to keep all seeds and nuts (even from the store) in the fridge or freezer. They can go rancid on the shelf.

Pastry Camp:Day 4 using some of the crust and dough from first few days for other tasty things: sour cream apple pie (with apples from the farm), sweet palmiers, and breakfast tarts with 5 Fridge chèvre, 5Fridges eggs and a little prosciutto.

Pastry Camp: Day 1 I am taking my fall/Thanksgiving break in my own commercial kitchen to finally practice some pastry skills with the Sheeter. The sheeter is something that reminds me of a story in Stephen King’s, Night Shift. I started out today with a short tutorial on the sheeter from and was able to roll some nice pie dough as my first practice. Beard Trim! A hazard of w**d mitigation is getting burrs in one’s fur. While W***y had an impressive dreadlocked goatee, it had to go for his own comfort. Apparently however, there was a complaint lodged about the final look.

You are cordially invited to the Farm/Ag Emergency Awareness Event at 5 Fridges Farm (in Wheat Ridge) on Sept 7 at 4 PM. ‘

Nathan Whittington (Manager of Emergency Management for the Sheriff’s Department of Jefferson County) and Commander Lucas Hunt of the Wheat Ridge Police Department will be giving a short presentation on the services of farm/ag emergency management in Wheat Ridge and Jefferson County. The Mayor of Wheat Ridge, Bud Starker, will introduce the presentation and there will also be representatives from the Colorado Department of Agriculture in attendance.

This event will be open to all Jefferson County residents with interest in ag/large animal emergency preparedness and response. It will be held at 5 Fridges Farm in Wheat Ridge.
