Jack Frost and the Bull
Meeting the bull with the horns... Jack Frost had his first turnout in the big corral and met the neighbors' new bull. That bull for sure outweighs Jack, so I don't blame him for being cautious (even though there's a sturdy fence between them).
Today feels so blissfully like Autumn, I can hardly stand it! It's been in the low 40's all day, but with a wind chill of 33. I figured letting the ponies out to graze would save any lost hay due to the wind, and the light drizzle might entice the ponies to exercise themselves for me. I barely got back in the house and into my slippers before I heard the tell tale thundering of hooves as some happy ponies romped and jumped in exhilaration. I love watching them be horses, in the Autumn, while sipping a hot cup of pumpkin chai tea and wearing a big soft sweater. <3
The older you get, the harder you nap. We came home from a long trail ride in the Rockies to find Miss J down for the count. She didn't hear us pull in, unload, or any of the other noisy things we were doing. I started to get worried, so went to check on her. Glad I had my video going just in case it was a typical Judi napping party (she loves her naps!). The Lord and his Little Lady kept protective watch over their matriarch.
Sweet Lady Rosalita Burrito. She's starting to get a shine to her coat as she sheds out. <3
After being stuck in stalls for two days due to rain, Mo'kotavo'ha was very happy about being able to stretch her legs. Dezee was not as thrilled about her enthusiasm. Lol
While riding the Monster Truck around yesterday, Mo kept bucking and snorting every time we came around. She was either really happy and wanted to play, or she was telling Kimi what a lame-o she was for letting a predator on her back, and showing what SHE would do if I dare try to jump on HER back... ;) Either way, it's another way she's been breaking out of her shell, and I love it!
Preparing Rosie for expo by working her first little obstacle course last week. She gets a little reward after the two tougher obstacles at the end... an empty kiddy pool, and a kiddy pool filled with empty plastic bottles. I accepted a single foot in the water bottles as that was really tough for her.
Interesting day for the Bunny Man. For one, he had his first rider... and promptly bucked the little buckaroo off. ;) My neighbors cats have been "helping" me work ponies, and Hack took it upon himself at one point to jump on Benjamin's back. I was standing at his left shoulder, texting my neighbor when all of a sudden Ben went into a bucking frenzy. I stepped away (and felt a hoof barely graze my hand as I got out of reach) and saw the little black and white cat clinging to his left side. Needless to say, having a cat cling to ones back was not Benjamin's cup of tea. Benjamin immediately turned and came right back to me without my having to ask him. However, because I was standing next to his shoulder when it happened, he obviously blamed me and we had to work on him letting me touch that left barrel again (which didn't take long, although he remained a little jumpy for a while). He also kept a wary eye and ear on the little rascals the rest of our session.
Then I decided to introduce the halter for the first time. I went in with no expectations other than to get him used to seeing me holding it, and maybe touching him with it depending on how well the article in question was received. The first video is how wild and crazy that intro was. ;) He was a little jumpy at first, but that was because of the previous buckaroo fiasco. Considering he put on as big a show in the chutes as Tyrion did when I picked him up, and that we have been working on his head/ear shyness for a while, I can only fault myself for not working on asking him to lower his head for me. Everything else he handled like a champ! In the end, I let him wear the halter for about 5-10 minutes before removing it and ending his session. Normally I would leave it on for a few days or more to let him get used to it, however since he is my liberty project, I would like to put it on and remove it daily instead. That way I don't allow myself to get lazy and try to rely on it in future sessions. ;)
When your 12 year old mustang former band stallion, who just got home from an almost week-long trip to show in Fort Worth, sees you coming to collect him at the end of grazing time and happily comes up to greet and follow you back to the corral. That's Amore! Love that my soul'stang can have a stressful and long week of showing and traveling, and step right back into daily routine without holding a grudge against me. <3
Such is the life of a fancy show mustang as he prepares for Fort Worth. ;)
Today during our liberty session, we worked more on joining up and tracking me, touching and swinging of the lunge whips at his sides, and started working on turning. We also had lots of nose-hand touches! He is still nervous when in close quarters (hence the nodding and constant head movements) but he steps right up into my bubble when asked. He seems to like keeping his mind on something, and I can see a little bit of pride when he figures something out.
This guy looks good from every angle. <3
Benjamin Bunny has gotten used to our routine of eating a few handfuls of hay before each meal. He still keeps a wary eye on me, but he will step right up for a bite.
The poop pile is good for rolling.
If anyone wants some manure, give me a holler. Lol
Is there a warning about never waking a sleeping mare? ;)
At the end of our session, she kept following me around as I prepared to leave her with some lunch. She stayed engaged and interested throughout our liberty session, and seemed to want to keep at it.
A little snippet of today's second liberty session. Most of the video we were off camera, unfortunately. We started joining up and walking, and I used the longer whip to work on her left hind end and leg. She is super touchy and kicky with that area, so this was really good for her! Second video snippet to come...
Fun little video of some wild ponies (and a Burrito) enjoying a break from the rain the other day.
Making progress with all three TIP mares feels good, especially with this little lady. Lots of face touches today, and she even took a carrot from me. Should have seen the look on her face when she took that carrot... cracked me up. Lol
The newest TIP mare is super "helpful." I've been letting her settle in and haven't done much with her yet. As you can see, she is a very "wild" mustang. Lol
We were out of town for a week to attend a wedding, so the ponies were quite happy to be let out on Monday for some turnout time. Enjoy a few little clips of their fun together. I like how Rosie starts running to me at one point, then turns away and races off last second. She's too cute. Lol
Somebody was enjoying a little sunrise cardio this morning.
The TIP mare is super smart. Once she learns something, she doesn't hesitate to do it again (often times she'll do something before I even ask). This is only the second time working on trailer loading, and she walked right in twice, even though the trailer was in a new place and was angled slightly higher than usual. She's going to make someone a great horse! :)
