I had big plans for this little mare; but unfortunately unexpected circumstances have forced me to part with her.

She’s a NCHA money earner. Take her to the breeding barn or continue to use her. She’s super sweet, easy to be around.

Here’s your yearly PSA about loose salt Vs salt blocks!!

Did you know that salt blocks were designed for cattle? Cattle have rough washcloth type tongues like a cat. They can lick those blocks and get enough salt. Especially in a herd situation there are enough cows to actually USE up the blocks.

Did you know that horses have a smooth tongue? Much like a dog or even us! Horses on average need 2-3 tablespoons of salt daily for all the bodily functions that require salt!!

It would take a horse hours on a salt block to get enough. Many horses have actually learned to give up on the blocks and will ignore them. Never even trying to get enough salt. You know what getting a salt burn on your tongue feels like right???

So consider choosing loose salt for your equine buddies! It’s SUPER cheap! I was at TSC yesterday and priced a 50 lbs bag for less than $10!

Stole this from another gentleman that did a fantastic job on writing up manifest/permit requirements.

There seems to be a lot of confusion around the subject of Brand Inspections as it applies to horses and mules. Let me see if I can simplify this so that it makes more sense.

When you live in a brand inspection state, your horses and mules will have individual brand inspection certificates and you will be required to carry these with you as proof of ownership. Currently Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, Nevada, North Dakota and South Dakota (west of the Missouri river) require brand inspection for horses and mules. This is also the case for Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia in Canada.

For those of you living outside these states or provinces who plan to travel to these locations, you will have to obtain a brand inspection for each horse or mule. If you live outside the western states or provinces, then your home state or province may not require or provide brand inspections. If so, then you will have to call ahead to the first brand inspection state you are planning to visit and make an appointment with a brand inspector.

But what if my horse doesn’t have a brand?

That’s where a lot of the confusion begins. Brand inspection is not about whether your horse or mule is branded, but rather about providing proof of ownership. Your mount may or may not have an actual brand, regardless the animal must go through a brand inspection process when entering a brand inspection state.

The brand inspector will ask to see your proof of ownership which will include a bill of sale signed by the seller with a description that adequately describes the animal(s). Once you prove to the inspector that you lawfully possess the animal in question, they will issue brand inspection certificate for each animal. These certificates show the animals markings, brands if applicable and or distinguishing marks.

How much does it cost?

Fees vary by state, but let’s use Montana for the example. The inspection fee for a 1-year permit in 2023 is currently ten dollars. A lifetime horse inspection permit is thirty dollars. In Idaho a lifetime permit is fifty-three dollars. The lifetime permit is good for as long as you own the horse or mule and is non-transferrable.

Do I need one for every state? That could get expensive!

No, brand inspection permits are reciprocal. Once you are issued brand inspection certificate it is valid in all the other BI states for the term of the permit.

What if I am just passing through?

The law requires anyone transporting livestock into or out of a brand inspection state to have a current brand inspection.

What if I elect not to get a brand certificate for my horse?

Brand inspectors are peace officers by statue, carry a firearm and have the power to arrest with or without a warrant. If you are stopped by a brand inspection officer, they will expect you to have brand inspections for every horse and mule in your trailer. Failure to do so can result in significant fines and your animals could be impounded until you can show proof of ownership. If you are hauling horses with no bill of sale or brand inspections you could even be arrested if the BI feels the animals are stolen. It’s absolutely NOT worth the risk.

Fine . . . how do I get a Brand Certificate?

You can use the Internet to Google “Brand Inspection” and the name of the FIRST brand inspection state you are traveling to. From these pages there is generally a “Find a brand inspector” link to a page that will usually be broken down by county or some kind of district. Contact the closest inspector to your point of entry in that state and tell them that you would like to make an appointment. They will direct you on how to proceed from there.

It sounds like a lot of hassle!

The actual process is really quite simple. The inspector will review your bill of sale and make notations about your animal’s brands, socks, blazes, scars or other marks that would uniquely identify them on the certificate. It doesn’t typically take very long and the more polite and cooperative you are the faster it will move along. For a one-hour investment you can get a lifetime of security for your horses and if stopped it will prevent you from being detained along your way.

What if I don’t have a Bill of Sale, are my registration papers enough?

Typically, registration papers are not considered proof of ownership. If you cannot produce a Bill of Sale, then contact any Brand Inspection office for assistance.

Travel safe out there!

UPDATED TO ADD: if you are from a non brand state just traveling thru a brand state you DO NOT need to seek out a brand inspector. If you are traveling from a non brand state to a brand state AND staying permanently or for an extended period of time then you'll want to reach out to the local inspector.

🔺SOLD!🔺

10-11yo GRADE blue roan mare “Whiskey”

Looking to rehome, moved south and I don’t have the time I thought I would to use her.

Started roping off her this winter November/April 2021, started on the heel side and also on the calf dummy. Green, but would make a great practice horse. I’ve used her all over the ranch, started c**ts off her, etc. She’s sure footed and solid. She’s broke, one hand, stops hard. Not for beginners as she does have some s***k as in she’s quick footed! Stands 14.3” and stocky

Have any questions, please message me.

UTD on teeth, coggins, farrier and vaccinations. Currently located in Marrieta, OK.

All reasonable and respectable offers will be considered

Good home a must, I want to see her being used. She wants a job, I can’t let her just sit here!

Daily reminder.

06/11/2021

Have you thought about quitting your day job to train and sell horses? Here are ten, no make that eleven, good reasons to reconsider that career change.

1. Your weekends will be shot.

It seems like the majority of the horse-buying world’s population works Monday through Friday. That means the only time people can shop for a horse is on the weekends. No more weekend plans for you with your family and friends. Might as well get a restaurant job instead, because if you’re going to work on the weekend, at least you’ll have a steady source of income and be able to score free meals.

2. No matter how many good horses you sell, people will always remember you for that ONE incident when they came to see a horse. You know the time, they rolled in the mud with the saddle or suddenly got terrified of the fly spray bottle they see daily.

What’s the first thing you think of when you hear the name Bill Clinton? I can almost guarantee it’s not how he ran our country.

3. You will always end up with that one horse who stays skinny and lame no matter what you do.

No one wants a lame bag of bones — you won’t even be able to give him away and the client who sent him to you, will always claim, to be innocent and they don't think he's skinny...as you count every rib. You will be stuck with him until you give up and pour hundreds of dollars of your own money into said horse. And the seller will always think it looks fine, he's just fit....BS, he's skinny lady.

4. Everyone already “knows” how to ride.

That is, until they get to your place and fall off. But in court they’ll cry to the judge that they were bucked off and your horse was crazy. They seem to forget that you all but refused to let them try the horse and you told them not to lope it and ask for a rollback. It rolled back, they didn't.

5. People love to buy for color.

Yes, you might have the perfect bay-colored gelding for their son, but they insist on the flashy paint stallion that is 15 years old and still won’t let the vet close enough to be gelded.

6. People will use you as an opportunity to get in a free ride.

Of course they’re interested in Pancho the Wonder Horse: it’s 70 degrees, sunny and a Saturday. You brought your whole family in shorts and flip flops? Maybe the horse trailer is hidden behind your mini van? After your whole family got in a ride, you’re going to go home and think it over and promise to call us right back? Let me hold my breath.....

7. People will be forever tied to you.

And if they love the horse they bought, they'll drop you a note or call or text maybe once a year, if you’re lucky but if for some reason the are not happy, they'll be sure to post it on ever social media site there is, AND never even attempt to call you and ask for help.

8. You will cringe every time the phone rings on a holiday or vacation.

Do you answer it, even though it's Christmas Day? One part says, Heck no, the other says, well some don't celebrate Christmas and if you don't answer the phone, they will call on the next horse, so you answer it.........and yes, ask my family, I really have answered buyer calls on Christmas from buyers and sold horses on it too.

9. People will ask all the questions you’ve already answered explicitly in the ad.

“Offered for sale: 16h chestnut Thoroughbred gelding.” “How tall is he and what color is he?” 🤦‍♀️

10. People will be your best friend and recommend you to everyone, until their horse is not perfect.

Until the horse does something horse-like, ya know, like trip or roll in mud or snort at a butterfly and then the whole world will know how horrible a person you are but they still will never call you direct, after all that would be too easy.

11. Almost every horse you have for sale will stay sound and blemish free until the morning the potential buyer is out to look at them.

It’s a law of physics. What’s up must eventually go down. What’s sound must eventually go lame. What’s clean will definitely get dirty.

Honestly, I love my job, it’s a blessing, but there are days slinging coffee at Starbucks sounds rather tempting 😉

Great tips👌🏼

Great tips👌🏼

Tip: When I’m training them, I do all three events: heading, heeling, and calf roping. Horses aren’t stupid animals and they know the difference. I’ll rope calves on a head horse to help them accelerate faster and get on their hind-end faster. I’ll head on a calf horse to keep them from ducking and to teach them when I throw my rope they shouldn’t think about stopping, they keep moving forward. When I’m heeling, I can slow everything down, get their ribs bent and work on control—shortening up their stride.
