Meet "Leo DeCatrio!" 😍😂
This adorable kitten was adopted about 2 weeks ago and he passed his wellness exam with flying colors…and toys…and catnip. (Can you guess which picture was post catnip 🙃) Low stress visits are for cats too! 💙🩵

Hello, it's us again! 👋 Another reminder during this heat wave that it's too hot for your dogs to be doing much exercise outside! 🥵 If you take your dog out during this hot weather, walk briefly in the early morning or evening in grassy or shaded areas. Heat stroke is a very real danger. Signs of heat stroke include heavy panting, rapid heart rate, weakness, disorientation, excessive drooling and vomiting. If you suspect your pet is suffering from heat related illness, move them to a cool place and GRADUALLY begin cooling with fans and cool (not cold) towels and offer small amounts of water. Call a vet immediately!

🌡️ It's early in the year for this post, but It's going to be hot this week!

Walk your pet in the early morning or well after the sun has gone down. Ground temperature will be hotter than air temperature. At an air temperature of just 87 degrees, it’s possible for pavement to reach over 140 degrees! 🔥 This can burn paws. If it is uncomfortable to hold the back of your hand on the asphalt or pavement for 3-5 seconds, then it is too hot for paws! 🔥🐾

It's best to leave your pets at home when it's hot, but should you have to transport your pets, use a blanket to protect them from the heat of leather seats in your vehicle and DON'T leave them unattended in the car!

Signs of heat stroke include heavy panting, rapid heart rate, weakness, disorientation, excessive drooling and vomiting. If you suspect your pet is suffering from heat related illness, move them to a cool place as quickly as possible and GRADUALLY begin cooling with fans and cool (not cold) towels and offer small amounts of water. Never force your pet to drink or dip them in an ice cold bath.

Then ☎️ us and let us know that your pet is having heat related issues so we can help.
(No hands or paws were injured in these photos 😉)

The scariest day of the year for pets is fast approaching!! 🎇🎆

If your pet is noise sensitive and you think they could benefit from medication, NOW is the time to talk to us. Medications may need adjusting to get the dose correct, and if your pet has never been on medication before, you will need time to test dose the meds to ensure there are no adverse reactions.

We know it’s been a rough few weeks for some of our dog owners based on the phone calls we are getting!

Below are some tips to help deal with the rest of cicada season. Leashing your dog can help avoid over consumption. Very few dogs can be loose in the yard and be expected to ignore the giant buffet table. It may take a bit of creativity but there are plenty of ways and places to get your dogs out in the beautiful weather that doesn’t mean cicada snacking!

Remember it will all be over soon so hang in there! 🤗💪

It’s a big day for the smallest breed in the world! 💪 Meet one of our “littles,” Rizzo, who is only 5 months old and weighs only 4 pounds.

The history of the Chihuahua is uncertain, but the dog is named after the Mexican state of Chihuahua, where the dog was discovered about 1850. Chihuahuas are companion dogs that like attention and despite their size they usually have big personalities! Even though they are considered lap dogs, they are active and like to be kept occupied. Chihuahuas may be wary of strangers and are not always ideal for children given their small size.

Chihuahua and Chihuahua mixes are one of the most common tiny dogs we have as patients. Is your dog one of them?

Over 60% of female dog owners say they take dozens of photos of their dog. So let's see those pics of who you'll be celebrating with today! 🐶

Three out of four female pet parents consider themselves dog moms; almost 60% strongly agree with being considered a dog mom.

"What is it about the bond between human and dog that is not like the relationship between parent and child? Science offers an explanation for the similarity. When our dogs gaze into our eyes with that "you are everything to me" look, our bodies — and theirs as well — are flooded with oxytocin, the hormone of love and nurture."

They're almost here!!!! 😱

We've been getting questions about the upcoming cicada season and yes, there is a high probability your pet will cross paths with them. But while the size and sound of periodical cicadas may seem intimidating, they pose only a minimal risk to pets. Cicadas are not inherently toxic, they don't sting and they are not known to carry diseases. The tips below should help you get through the next few weeks, but if you have further questions, please contact us!

On this special day dedicated to veterinary professionals all over the world, we want to thank OUR veterinarians. Today, we celebrate your tireless dedication to pet health and well-being. Thank you for making a difference in the lives of animals and for being an essential part of the health community.

World Veterinary Day pays tribute to all the veterinarians who are living and breathing their passion, making efforts to improve animal health, public health, and the environment. This year’s theme is “Veterinarians are essential health workers.” The application of veterinary science contributes not only to animal health and well-being but also to human physical, mental and social well-being. This aspect of veterinary medicine often goes unseen but protecting and improving the health of people and their communities is an essential part of our profession.

If you happen to see one of our vets today, show them a little extra love. We are immensely proud of them all! 💙😊

Actually, yesterday was National Beagle Day (April 22) but since Pepper celebrated her big day by getting spayed 🤦‍♀️ we took her picture when she came for a post-surgical checkup this morning.

Beagles are ranked in the top 10 popular breeds to own, and Pepper lives up to her reputation! She is friendly, easy to train, playful and loves to sniff ALL the smells. She handled surgery like a rock star and once she is fully healed and not wearing her donut, she will have a belated Beagle Day celebration! 🎉🎊🦴🐾

We know we have lots of Beagle patients, post yours in the comments! ⬇️

We love our furry friends, but we may not realize our animal companions have a carbon footprint too. Fortunately, there are ways we can go green with our pets. Here are some simple and fun ways to do our part for Mother Earth:

💩 Research your p**p bags!!!! Not all p**p bags that claim to be biodegradable actually are. Most bags won’t easily break down in the oxygen-free environment of the landfill. Look for bags that are ‘compostable’ as compostable means something that can be fully broken down in compost and transformed into organic waste. Not all biodegradable bags are compostable, but all compostable bags are biodegradable.

♻️ Recycling pet food and treat packaging is a great way to help reduce the impact your pet has on the environment.

🛍️ Donate gently used towels, blankets, and other pet items to a local animal shelter. Not only are you keeping these items out of a landfill, but you’re helping a local organization to keep animals comfortable.

How are you celebrating Earth Day with your pet? 🌎🌳☀️

Our staff and our guests had a great time at the beautiful Raise The Woof Gala put on by DuPage Animal Friends to raise money for the new DuPage County animal facility! "The new and expanded building will allow the shelter to operate more efficiently, provide much-needed space for progressive programs, and allow for the compassionate care, socialization, enrichment, and training for unwanted and abandoned pets. The state-of-the-art facility will enhance the quality of life of the animals during their stay at the shelter and be a valuable resource to people in our community." We look forward to watching the progress and seeing the finished product!

Have you heard? There's a big event happening on Monday! 🌕☀️😉

As we make viewing plans you may be wondering what kind of preparation is needed, if any, for our pets.

A good rule of thumb is to prepare for this day as you might prepare your pet for the 4th of July holiday. Keep your pets HOME from viewing events, away from large and excited crowds. Keep them indoors with shades drawn and if you are home, monitor them for any odd behavior. If pets are scared of storms, they may mistake the partial darkness as a change in weather patterns. Give them food toys to help keep them busy.

There's not a great deal of research on how pets respond to eclipses. A study from October 2023 conducted during a partial eclipse reported some minor behavior changes in dogs, mostly related to stopping/starting barking and more so for those in the darkest areas. Cats didn't seem bothered enough to even provide any data for the researchers (big surprise 🙃)

The top question is probably whether pets need to wear special sunglasses. You don’t need glasses for your pets. Dogs and cats tend to avoid staring at the sun and should not be any more interested in looking up on Monday. Trying to put glasses on them, even for a photo op, may just make them more anxious.

Reach out to us with any questions and enjoy eclipse day!

As Easter approaches, here are a few tips to help you avoid a pet emergency this weekend. 🙀

💐 Remove lilies or better yet, choose different flowers for an Easter bouquet. Lilies in the “true lily” and “day lily” families are extremely dangerous for cats. Just a small amount of a leaf or petal, licking a few pollen grains off its fur while grooming, or even drinking the water from the vase can cause a cat to quickly develop fatal kidney failure. Early symptoms include lethargy, drooling, vomiting and loss of appetite. Dogs that eat lilies may have minor stomach upset.

🍫 Chocolate ingestion calls to poison control are often higher around Easter because pets find the hidden chocolate the Easter Bunny left behind and forgot to tell you about! Symptoms can occur anywhere between four and twenty-four hours after a pet has consumed chocolate and can include vomiting, diarrhea, increased thirst, panting or restlessness, excessive urination, and seizures.

🐇 Easter grass is tempting to pets and if ingested can cause a life-threatening blockage in the gastrointestinal tract.

🍬 Sugarless candy and gum may contain xylitol which can be extremely toxic to dogs causing changes in their blood glucose levels. Symptoms of xylitol poisoning develop quickly after consumption and may include vomiting, weakness, lack of coordination or difficulty walking or standing, lethargy and seizures.

🍇 Raisins are common in breads or cookies and if ingested can cause serious kidney issues in dogs. Symptoms may include vomiting or diarrhea, lethargy and lack of appetite. If you suspect your pet has eaten grapes or raisins do not wait for symptoms to appear before contacting a vet. Treatment can be given before the toxins in the fruit are absorbed.

We are closed Sunday. In case of an Easter emergency, contact Arboretum View Animal Hospital.
