We saw a very special patient this morning. Sophie Paige has A LOT of work to do; she’s supposed to be helping the Easter Bunny 🐰🐰 by laying eggs in preparation for the Easter holiday in a few weeks! 🐣🌷

But her egg production had slowed so we took an x-ray and found she had become egg bound; egg binding occurs when an egg takes longer than usual to pass. We administered medicine to help improve contractions enough for that egg to pass and then she was able to resume normal production! 🥚

"Hey there! I'm Tucker, a 5-month-old Goldendoodle. I had an adventure last week when I decided to help myself to an entire salad! There was something in the salad that upset my mom so she called my vet and they told her what to do to make me throw up. When that didn’t work, I had to come to the hospital. They gave me some medicine, and not only did my tasty salad come back up, but they discovered I’d ALSO eaten a pair of underwear! 😲🙈😬

Since they saw more than just salad, they did an x-ray to make sure there was nothing else in my tummy (but of course there wasn’t because it was all in the bucket! 🥵)

One of the ingredients in the salad I ate can be very dangerous for dogs and might have posed a risk to my kidneys so I had to come back every day for a blood draw. I was a good boy during my visits, and thankfully, I didn’t have any health problems. Can you guess what dangerous thing I ate?"

Happy International Women's Day! 🦸‍♀️

Did you know the field of veterinary medicine is heavily dominated by women? (You’ve been inside our building right? 😉)

Dr. Helen Dane earned her doctorate degree from Iowa State University in 1982. After several years in private practice, she opened Danada Veterinary Hospital on August 2, 1989 and has been our hospital owner for almost 36 years! Independently owned veterinary practices continue to dwindle; we are the only multi-species hospital in Wheaton that is independently owned.

Today we celebrate not only our founder and co-workers, but all the women in the world who show up every day and make a positive impact in the world! 💪

Will your pet want to sleep or love the early meal?

Remember to show a little patience with your pets this weekend. Dogs and cats have their own circadian rhythm — a biological clock that helps them know when to eat, sleep, and go potty and these internal clocks override our rigid time schedules. We’re suddenly feeding and walking them an hour early. It can be tough for some pets (and let’s be real, for people too 🙋) to adapt, so build in room for an adjustment period. Try altering their schedule in 15 minute increments over the next few days.

What’s Up This Wednesday? Ears! It's hard not to smile when we see these sweeties! 🥰 Bandit is an 11-year-old Schnauzer mix and Harley is a 17-week-old Scottie.

Ear positioning can give us insight into how a dog is feeling. When a dog is interested in something their ears will usually be forward-facing and more erect. If a dog is a uncomfortable, their ears would be lowered or pulled back tighter against the head.

Microchipping is a crucial tool for reuniting lost pets with their family. You may have heard the news that pet microchip company called Save This Life has unexpectedly ceased operations and has unlinked its databases from national registries. If you discover your pet's microchip was registered to the company that's ceased operations, you'll need to register with a different company.

If you're unsure which company your pet's microchip is registered with, you can check the number using the AAHA Universal Microchip Lookup Tool at https://www.aaha.org/for-veterinary-professionals/microchip-search/ If the chip starts with 991 or 900164, it MAY be a chip from Save This Life.

Pets that are chipped at our hospital are registered with Home Again. If your pet received their microchip elsewhere, we can help you transfer the registration to Home Again for a nominal cost.

It's also important to keep your contact information current with the company that your chip is registered with. If your details are outdated, a microchipped pet may not be able to find their way home.

Feeling stressed after a long week? 🥵 We have our own little zen space right now courtesy of boarders Menue and Madison. Just listen to these beauties! Studies suggest that listening to a cat’s purr can reduce stress, anxiety, and blood pressure in humans. The low-frequency vibrations produced by purring have a calming effect and can promote relaxation. Enjoy! 🧘‍♀️🧘

Menue also brings a bit of comic relief by rubbing all over the phone…of the person allergic to cats. 🤦‍♀️
