Microchips work! If your pet is microchipped, that's a great first step but it's just as important to keep your contact info updated with the microchip registry. A microchip can only reunite you with your furry family member if it has the right info! 💙🐶🐱

Back in July, Opie went missing from his home in California, leaving his owner devastated. Since he was microchipped, she never gave up on the chance of getting that call.

Fast forward a few months- Itasca Police Department brought a stray to our shelter. Both the Itasca Police and our team scanned and to everyone’s surprise, it traced back to California! One phone call later, and the very next day (plus a flight), Opie was back where he belonged- home with his owner.

We’ll never know exactly how Opie made his way nearly across the country, but we do know this: microchips work. They make reunions like this possible, no matter how far our four-legged friends may travel. ✈️

We have another modified version of “What Did I Eat Wednesday” since we won’t make you guess this time.

Meet Spoon, 7-year-old tabby. She was a fascinating case. Her mom, a surgical resident, noticed something unusual in her belly, a persistent mass. What was very odd was that Spoon was acting totally normal. She was eating, drinking, and showing zero signs of stomach upset. 🤷‍♀️👀

We took X-rays and found a sizable mass in her abdomen. But given her lack of symptoms and the origin of the mass unclear from x-rays and ultrasound, we recommended exploratory surgery.

And guess what we found? A large amount of fabric lodged in her stomach, most likely from reusable shopping bags. Spoon had been munching on them for quite awhile given the amount of material.

The fabric was removed, and we are happy to report that this gorgeous girl has made a full recovery. 😻

What a reminder! Even the most normal-acting pets may be hiding something. Most foreign bodies present with lethargy or gastrointestinal symptoms, but not this one! 🤯

🌍💉 World Rabies Day-September 28

Today we join a global movement to raise awareness about rabies — a disease that is 100% preventable through vaccination.

As veterinary professionals, we know how important it is to stop the spread of rabies not just here in our community, but around the world. While rabies is rare in the U.S. thanks to strong vaccination laws, it still causes tens of thousands of deaths globally every year, mostly from dog bites in areas without access to vaccines. The virus infects the central nervous system and causes severe neurological symptoms and ultimately death; it is the deadliest infectious disease with a 99.9% fatality rate.

✔ Vaccinate! Rabies is 💯% preventable in your pets (dogs, cats, and ferrets)
✔ A rabies vaccination is required by law in DuPage and other surrounding counties
✔ Support global efforts to eliminate dog-mediated human rabies deaths by 2030

6-month-old Bert was in earlier this week for surgery. He was feeling a bit nervous, so he got some extra snuggles during his surgery prep and he showed incredible courage. So today he's our honorary "Captain" Bert in celebration of Meow Like a Pirate Day. 💛🐱☠

(Since pirates were rarely seen without a cat or two to keep rodents at bay, it's only fitting to include them in today’s Talk Like a Pirate Day festivities.)

🚨 Leptospirosis Alert for Chicago Pet Owners

The Chicago Department of Public Health has confirmed multiple human cases of leptospirosis and just like humans, this is a good reminder that dogs are at risk too.

🦠Leptospirosis is a serious bacterial disease spread through the urine of infected animals (especially rats) and can contaminate water, soil, and surfaces. Dogs can get infected by sniffing, licking, or walking through contaminated areas—even through small cuts on their paws. They can also be infected by bite wounds, or eating infected animals or tissues.

💉 Protect Your Pet
Lepto can cause serious illness in dogs, including liver and kidney damage, and may even be fatal

Leptospirosis vaccines are widely available and recommended by the AVMA especially in urban areas or places with rodent activity

Avoid letting pets drink or play in puddles, rivers, lakes, or stagnant water

Today we honor all those that we lost, and give thanks for the heroes, both two legged and four legged.

"When the World Trade Center collapsed on September 11, 2001, nearly 10,000 emergency rescue workers joined in the efforts to help. More than 300 of those heroes were dogs. We remember the Hero Dogs along with the countless people who had their lives irrevocably changed by man’s best friend. From search and rescue dogs to comfort dogs to bomb detection dogs, these canines’ stories of courage and healing are a long-lasting legacy that must never be forgotten."

The Penn Vet Working Dog center was by the Search & Rescue Dogs that responded following the attacks on 9/11. It opened on September 11, 2012 and continues to serve as a national research and development center for detection dogs.
