I was interested to see that one of the larger projects I worked on, Selsdon Park has gone on the market. It was beautifully renovated in the last few years by Birch Hospitality and I see they retained the ceiling I painted THIRTY (gulp!😐) years ago! Obviously I was a mere child!

Clearing out my work space and found these designs for two friezes for a riverside clubhouse. I wasn’t sure of them at the time and they didn’t respond but it’s a shame to waste the effort so I’m leaving them here. I think they’re actually quite nice.

In January I had the pleasant task of illustrating a poetry collection for Terry Foote. I produced a cover and chapter illustrations.
I met Terry at an author event last summer at Elmhurst Library. I was one of three poets and they grouped us together. It was an enormous pleasure to spend the afternoon with Terry and also Kenneth Jackson. The event didn’t pull in many punters so we spent the afternoon chatting and reading each other’s work. Both Terry and Ken are tremendously talented.
Artistic Avenue is a beautiful collection charting a journey with Terry through love, grief and loss, his passion for music, current affairs, nature and more.

Towards the end of last year I published a colour edition of Fair to Piddling. The original black and white version had become nearly unavailable on Amazon, so I republished a new edition solely available on Amazon.

Here's my absolute favorite illustration from it inspired by my mum who began noticeably shrinking around the time the first grandchildren turned up. I've just been back to the UK to see her, she's doing great and is now very tiny indeed! I might as well share my silly poem from my book that she inspired:

Nano Nanny (My Shrinking Granny)

My nanny’s got so tiny
that when we have her here for tea,
we make her mini muffins
and feed her on my knee.

I love my nanny dreadfully
so I’m careful where I tread,
and when it gets to seven o’clock,
she helps with bath and bed.
I scoop her up and put her in my favorite wind-up sub,
and she sails around me in my bath
and tells me where to scrub!

But I’m not allowed to have bubbly stuff
because the other day
she got sucked inside a bubble,
and floated clean away!

When it’s time for bed
she reads me books, though it can be hard to hear,
so I pick her up on a cotton-wool bud
and sit her on my ear!

She may come around at breakfast,
it helps my mum to cope,
though it’s always tricky to set up
the electron microscope!

You may have noticed, since you started
this verse from the very top,
that my nanny’s been shrinking all the while
and now lives
in this

Fair to Piddling is actually not children's poetry but a hilarious romp through midlife, motherhood and menopause.

Story from my yoof! In the mid nineties, I was getting nearly all my muralist commissions from House and Garden magazine. One day, I had a call from Italy, it was an offer to fly me out to work on a converted farmhouse in Umbria, small to no pay but a holiday experience was promised. I took a chance and flew out with the daughter of this lady’s English neighbour. She told me that the people I was working for were a Sicilian prince and principessa.

They were so lovely and invited me to Sicily the following summer to paint more murals in their summer home, Villa Trabia. They then offered the Umbrian farmhouse to my family for a week rent free (it had just been featured in the New York Times.)
We became very close and they came and stayed with us in England. Both had fascinating stories, Francesco’s family were viceroys for the Spanish, I believe they descended from the Bourbons.
I was incredibly lucky to have known them, best clients ever!

On from the last post, I just put up the birdhouse in the boba shop. Glad to see my painted cloud sofa is holding up after nearly a year. The paint is wearing at edges but I’m amazed - goes to show that you can paint anything.

My friend with the boba shop had a mural painted by some local kids but a gap was left on the wall. There was an idea that it would be an Instagram wall and a ‘story’ or sign would be added for interest. I made this birdhouse that I hope to install today. I would add that the idea behind the hanging birds came from a Mark Hearld card we received, totally pinched the concept. Will add photos once installed.

I’ve been scratching my head as to how to illustrate my new book of dog poetry and humour. It’s inspired by all the photos I take of my boys on my phone. Mixing illustrations with photos was hard so I am just doing the chapter headings and making the illustrations photos too. Little ‘3D’ portraits of Max and Griffin. Find me The Dog Poet here and insta.
