We instantly adored seven month old Splits from the moment we spotted her back in December at Chicago Animal Care and Control. She is one of the sweetest dogs you will ever meet. We are so happy we had an awesome foster home available to host her over the past few weeks.

Her foster mom felt inspired to write a poem about Splits, we hope you enjoy and inquire about her today!

Hello!

My name is Splits!
My name really fits!
I am really super smart;
I have a big heart;
I'm famous for my nose art;
and I blame the boy dogs when I fart!
At 6 months old and Happy-Go-Lucky;
No bath of mine requires a rubber ducky!
I love to please and obey;
So you and I have a good day!
I am fully vetted and spayed;
I'm ready to come home with you and play!
I am great at the dog park;
Because I never ever bark.
I'm learning to walk on a leash;
All my training goals are in reach.
I love other dogs and have so much fun;
I also love to bask in the sun.
I am tail-wagging happy with a bone;
and I self-entertain when I am on my own.
I play nice with others;
Whether they are sisters or brothers!
I am gentle and kind;
This Valentine's Day, could you be mine?
Come and meet me at adoption events;
Heartland Animal Shelter, I represent!

Splits will be at our Kriser's Dog Adoption Eventt this weekend!! ✨ Come meet her! ✨ Contact us at [email protected] if you have any questions! ✨

Sweet 11 month old, Lola Bunny is still looking for her forever home.✨❤️ We first spotted Lola Bunny down at Chicago Animal Care and Control in early December. She was so happy and wiggly, and loved other dogs so we leapt at the chance to take her into our program.

Lola has been lucky enough to spend time in two amazing foster homes, so we know her quite well!

Lola spent a few weeks in a foster home without a dog friend, but with two humans and the occasional visit from grand babies. Sometimes Lola's exuberance was a bit much for the babies, but it was always out of love. Her current fosters have been working on calm greetings with her and she has been super responsive to that training.

Lola is crate trained and has not had any issues being left in one during the day. She sleeps on a dog bed beside her fosters at night, and sleeps through the night. During the day, she likes to play but is also happy to nap next to her foster mom's desk for hours.

Lola Bunny is currently living in a foster home with a couple and their Golden Retriever, who Lola loves. They say, "Lola likes a morning routine and will do all her business outside as soon as she eats. During the day she goes outside every few hours and has made serious progress with housebreaking! She is doing great as we space out potty breaks more and more."

Lola loves everyone and just needs someone willing to work with Lola on establishing a routine and some simple fine-tuning! She is eager to please and food motivated which makes it easier. She loves playing fetch and having a zoomie session in the yard, but is very relaxed in the house after playtime."

Rozey is at our shelter. We are not yet open to the public (but will be on 2/6!). Please submit an application from our website, ✨link below✨ and email [email protected] to set up an appointment to meet her!

One year old, Rozey comes to us from a shelter partner in Kentucky. Rozey had been living in that crowded and underfunded rural shelter since July. She was in a kennel with several other dogs, and one of the staff favorites owing to her penchant for giving great hugs!

Rozey landed in a great foster home up here with cats and dogs! She's back at our shelter while they are traveling.

Her foster mom writes, "Rozey is a cheerful dog ready to find her forever family! She's been doing great with house training, sleeps through the night (either in the crate or in the dog bed next to my bed), and lets you know when she needs to head outside. She is food motivated and has learned where she is fed and promptly runs to that area when I am ready to serve her meals. She does not have any food aggression, and shares snacks and toys with her canine siblings.

Rozey is a social butterfly who gets along well with other dogs, cats, and kids, making her a wonderful fit for families. She's always happy to greet visitors and family members with a wagging tail and plenty of affection. We had a full house over the holidays, and Rozey got along with people of all ages. When left alone at home, Rozey is comfortable in her crate and settles in nicely until you return.

Her daily routine includes breakfast in the morning, followed by some outdoor fun and an hour of playtime before a cozy nap. She enjoys dinner between 4 and 5 p.m., with a little outdoor playtime afterward. Rozey also loves her daily walks, though she pulls a bit on the leash and could benefit from some training to refine her skills. Rozey's friendly personality and easygoing nature make her a delightful companion."

When we tell people that Chicken Dumpling is approx. 8 years old, no one believes us.

"The Benjamin Button of dogs," he was referred to as at Chicago Animal Care and Control, where he ended up in Dec 2024, as a neglected, starving stray. After a few weeks there, with some shelter, food, and love - he started "aging in reverse" and this senior boy started trotting around like a puppy. He was in desperate need of a dental surgery and a foster home to get healthy in. We were so happy we could provide him both, and made him a Heartland dog.

Chicken is a super friendly, easy-going boy who is doing well in his foster home. He lives with two other large dogs, his foster sisters, who are both around the same age as him. They all get along very well! They all 3 go on walks together, share toys, and even lay next to each other on the dog beds. They live in an apartment in the city and he does great with this lifestyle he also spent a week with a vacation foster who lived in a city apartment and was a great houseguest.

Chicken loves people just as much as he loves the other dogs. He greets everyone with his full body wiggles and will swing his back-end into you as a way of saying hello. It makes us laugh every time. He goes to work with his foster mom at the shelter and he has met many different people, including kids. He's also a very tolerant boy who lets his foster mom dress him up in whatever the weather requires -including pink snow boots on a freezing day. He is good for baths, nail trims, and vet visits.

Chicken is still working on putting weight on but it hasn't been hard for him - this boy loves to eat! He eats his food in enrichment toys to keep his brain active, and loves to work on commands for treats. It won't be long until he's officially "dumpling" size!

He is a sweet deserving senior dog who really deserves a forever home for his golden years. We love him so much, and we know you will too. Please inquire about Chicken Dumpling! Email us at [email protected] or fill out the adoption application below! ✨

Randy is at our shelter. We are not yet open to the public (but will be on 2/6!). Please submit an application from our website (✨link below✨) and email [email protected] to set up an appointment to meet him!

Randy is a Kentucky boy who landed himself a wonderful foster home up here for a few weeks. Randy's fosters are traveling and our shelter is operational after 7 months of construction, so we are happy to have Randy back with us. He has been great with every staff member and volunteer.

Randy lived with a couple and their dog, and is such a happy boy! Randy is housebroken, and after some initial anxiety with being left alone in a new place (understandable!), does well free roaming and has been left alone up to 4 hours. He was not intentionally left to free roam, as we do suggest crate training all new fosters, but he escaped the crate every time! Randy is a joy to walk on leash, and would be a great walking/hiking companion for someone who enjoys that.

Randy was such a good playmate for the resident dog. She is a bit older so Randy would need to be made to take breaks sometimes! Randy also spent a few days at Wiggly Tails in Northbrook when his foster was not available, and he did great in that group-play environment!

In Kentucky, Randy was briefly fostered in a home with cats and chihuahuas and did well. So while we have not had him in a home with cats, he is reportedly cat-friendly.

Randy's foster mom writes,"Randy is an active, happy, confident boy! He loves long walks and exploring the world through all the wonderful smells outside. He is a gentle and smart pup who adores other dogs and food. He enjoys spending time with his humans, sometimes even cuddling, although he also likes his space. At night, this means he loves to steal the best spot on the bed and cuddle for a bit and then graciously (he thinks) giving up that spot to go sleep somewhere else. He is housebroken and has done well free-roaming a few times in the house by himself."

We hope you will ask about Randy today!

"Unless someone like YOU cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not." - Dr. Seuss ✨

The "you" is everyone, everywhere. To make this world better will take a lot of effort. To make one dog like Dr. Seuss' world better, it really only takes one person's full commitment. Dr. Seuss is meant to be a best friend. We knew he was perfect the moment we met him at Chicago Animal Care and Control . He spent 6 weeks there being overlooked. Dr. Seuss likes to fly under the radar. He is simply content wherever he is, and is just so friendly and mellow. We think 4 years old is the perfect age!

Dr. Seuss knows commands, has excellent manners, and is super cute to boot. What is not to love about this adorable soft and sweet boy.

We hope you will inquire about him today! Contact us at [email protected] or fill out the adoption application below. ✨

Clara is a 6 month old Belgian malinois pup who was found as a stray and was brought to a local vet to await rescue. Clara was in bad shape when we met her, and covered in f***s, but that is not uncommon when we see dogs in extreme states of stress.

We had an amazing foster open her home to Clara, and our vet saw her a couple of days later for an exam.
That is when we learned the extent of Clara’s issues.
Clara is incontinent because she has a rare condition known as atresia ani, and lacks an a**l opening. This causes her to defecate through her v***a, which she has no control over and which causes her pain, discomfort, and infections.

We immediately contacted Veterinary Specialty Center in Bannockburn for a consult with a surgical specialist. Clara had to wait 4 weeks for her appointment, and during that time her devoted foster mom has made sure Clara is as happy and healthy as possible. This of course includes frequent diaper changes and cleanings.

On Friday, Clara had reconstructive surgery to create an a**l opening where there was none. Over the next few weeks we will learn if the surgery was successful. There is a 50/50 chance Clara will soon be a continent “normal” dog. Despite those odds, we knew we had to pursue this extremely costly procedure and give Clara this chance.

Please donate to our Dr. Do More Fund which focuses on special medical cases like precious Clara. 🙏❤️

We met Pico at Chicago Animal Care and Control and we instantly loved him.

After over 6 weeks of us trying to find a foster for him, an awesome volunteer stepped up, and brought him into her home.

Pico has been "quite literally been perfect," as described by his foster mom. They've enjoyed lots of lounging, walking, & car rides, as well as a chill day at her office & super fun doggy playdates.

Here is what we know and love about Pico:

✨ Eager to meet literally everyone (so gentle & sweet; LOVES to give/get hugs & kisses!)
✨ Elite cuddler
✨ Impeccible house manners (crate trained and house trained)
✨ Lover of all dogs (play style = rough & rowdy)
✨ Toy & treat enthusiast
✨ Professional zoomer
✨ Certified squirrel chaser
✨ "Smoker's bark"
✨ #1 fan of naps & sleeping in
✨ Passenger princess (car rides = a great opportunity to nap)
✨ CHO (Chief Happiness Officer) at the office

He is an enthusiastic, precious boy with the biggest blockhead and cutest wrinkly forehead. Please inquire about him today!

Rudder appreciation post!✨ Pictures don't do this extremely handsome boy justice so you will just have to meet him in person 😏. One year old Rudder attended yesterday's adoption event, even though he did not find his forever family, he is feeling pretty optimistic!✨

Rudder currently lives in a loving foster home with a nice family with young children, ages 7 months and 3 years old. Here's what his foster mom has to say about this sweet boy :::

"Rudder is the biggest-hearted pup! He's very playful with dogs and other people (loves everyone) but is also ready to cuddle up on the couch with you and wants to be touching you at all times. If you're not sitting, he'll let you know he's ready for some love by leaning up against you and giving you the biggest sweetest puppy dog eyes! Rudder is not an alpha dog so you can be at ease when meeting others. He immediately fell in love with our 3 year old and loves to play and cuddle with her, even if she wants to love him too hard (he'll take it). He's still a puppy in some ways and is learning all his commands, so with a little training, Rudder will be the perfect family dog."

We hope you inquire about adopting him! Contact us at [email protected] or fill out the adoption application below ✨
