THIS…this is why I love doing what I do! This sweet girl (the brown one) stayed with us shortly after being adopted by the best family ever. Sadly, we don’t know what happened to her before her adoption to make her so incredibly scared and shut down. Even with help from medications she struggles. We had the honor of caring for her and see the beginnings of her coming out of her shell. First it was slight tail wags, relaxing into us, then searching out attention and finally an attempt at play. This was her first attempt at initiating play with another dog…and she picked the biggest one here! 🤣. As someone who struggles with my own anxiety, I couldn’t be more proud of her bravery. It is deeply satisfying for me to provide that safe place for pets like her to bloom. 🥰

Ever had an anxiety or fear that you’ve tried to express to someone and they minimize it or tell you that you shouldn’t feel that way? Doesn’t change your fear does it? Just makes you feel more isolated and less understood. Dogs have anxiety and fears too. Many, many dogs do. More than you’d guess I think. We can work with your fur kids fears, and find the best way to accommodate them without dismissing their need to feel safe.

Had the most incredible photos of my horse Genesis sent to me the other day. This woman just clicked off a few shots and says this isn’t even her best ones. Umm, I’m speechless! Marigold with her hair up all the way to her tail is excited and ready to play.
Lucy with her tail tense in a loop is alert and in hunting mode.
You can see in the video that Mari’s relaxed, loose wagging tail looks different than Lucy’s due to their different breeds/builds.

Let’s talk reading dog behavior. Some people see a dog wagging their tail and assume it always means they are happy and relaxed. This is far from true. A stiff, wagging tail can mean tension and aggression. Some see fur standing up on the back and assume aggression. Just like your arm hair stands up on end for more than just being cold, fur standing up can also mean excitement. There is a lot more to it than A=B. You need to factor in their environment, their past, health, temperament and whole body cues. Watch their eyes, what they are focused on, the set of their face, their ears, tail and how they are breathing and posturing. They have a lot to tell us but you have to be willing to listen.

So proud of this boy! When he first started coming to us he would shake and cry from anxiety. Each time we see him he makes greater strides and we get to see more and more of his sweet personality shine through. Now that’s job satisfaction at its best!!! ❤️

The challenge with super smart, active dogs is keeping them stimulated…or they find their own stimulation! Usually that means digging, barking, tearing apart toys or household items. These two had lots of backyard time, bike training, dog park fun and swimming. I love a challenge! ❤️
