As many of you are aware, Pigeon Fever Virus is spreading throughout Southern Oregon. Heart Haven Ranch became aware of the Pigeon Fever outbreak off Hwy 140 around October 1, 2024. We at Heart Haven Ranch took the extra precautions and immediately stopped allowing any horses to come in or out of our property that same day. Although inconvenient to many, it was the safest and the right thing for our clients.
Unfortunately, this wasn't enough to protect us, this virus is transferred by flies and flies travel from property to property. Sadly, Heart Haven has its first case of Pigeon Fever as of Wednesday October 23.
We are 1.2 miles up Meadows Road. Anyone familiar with our facility knows we take pride in keeping a clean and
organized environment. This virus is carried by flies and it is imperative you keep your property clean daily. Not only at this time, but Always!
Pigeon Fever or Dryland Distemper is in the ground and lies dormant until some event releases it into the wild. This can happen at any time. Thankfully with the colder weather, fly season will hopefully come to an end very soon. But this does not mean you do not need to worry about Pigeon Fever. It can and will come back and always does.
We at Heart Haven Ranch are proactive and have all our
manure removed from all stalls, turnouts, and dry lots daily to keep our facility as clean as possible at all times. We also have our manure piles removed from our property regularly during the spring and summer months. In addition, we use an effective fly preventative protocol to minimize the fly reproduction on our property.
Daily manure removal and a clean facility is the key to stop the breeding of flies. This is not a one place issue, although we go above and beyond daily keeping our facility clean of manure off the ground, it still arrived somehow.
This virus needs to be eradicated by every property owner, every horse facility and every single property that has a
horse on it.
Our Vet was immediately called out and we are following their advice on how to handle this case and are continuing to take all precautions.
As long as the flies are still active, I would strongly encourage you all to keep your horses home at this time and your facilities cleaned daily in all areas.
Although, we know this did not originate from our facility, as we have heard "talk" of other cases within Sams Valley, we at Heart Heaven, feel the responsible and professional thing to do is to notify those around us if anything serious occurs that could impact others. Let's stay together and communicate as a horse community and care for each other!
