Say hello to Harry! 👋🏻 🐾

Harry is learning to trust new people, explore this big world, and understand he has found his “furever” home.

Together, his owner and Jon are learning his boundaries. His owner—who already owns another rescue dog—admitted Harry’s anxiety is new for her and definitely overwhelming. Thankfully, she reached out to Mad Dawgs to assist her with this.

Sometimes sit, down and stay aren’t the first steps. While we do work with dogs in need of basic training, our clients tend to consist of highly reactive dogs who need more specific interventions to work through their struggles. We know each dog is different and our training programs are customized accordingly. As always, our method is positive reinforcement and enrichment.

We look forward to sharing Harry’s successes in the weeks to come!

Congratulations to Maddie! 🐾

When Mad Dawgs began working with Maddie, she had a history of success at the dog park and with her friends on The Magic Dog Bus. However, on leash, she was very reactive. Barking and lunging made a really embarrassing scene for her owner.

Jon worked with Maddie’s owner on proper leash handling skills and redirection cues to help her in these situations.

While Maddie might one day be part of our Dawg Day Adventures program, this beautiful girl has completed her training sessions with Jon. Now, it’s up to her owner to continue the long journey. 🤍

Say hello to Scout! 👋🏻 🐾

This handsome, innocent-looking boy has some unruly behaviors. His interactions with other dogs may be in need of some work, but Scout is very smart. Sometimes, that intelligence can be the problem. However, Jon is prepared with enriching brain games to keep Scout’s active mind working.

Scout already knows some cues and Jon will help to clean up his responses to those while also teaching him some new tricks.

We look forward to sharing Scout’s progress! 💙

We also know we haven’t been as active on our posts. It’s been a busy season, for which we have been grateful! Thank you to all of our clients—past and present. Your referrals are very much appreciated.

SHELTER SPOTLIGHT: Max 🐾

This boy is going to make a great family member with an owner who has some patience on walks and cue work.

Jon took Max out for a walk around the park today for his first adventure. On these trips, Jon tries to learn what the dog already knows.

It was Max’s first time out, which made his attention span quite limited. It also made it difficult to assess his abilities. However, he got a long walk, did lots of good sniffing, and even did well with exposure to the local wildlife. 🦌

Max is a 1.5 year old husky poodle mix who is up for adoption at The Humane Society of Sumner County in Hendersonville, TN.

Say hello AND congratulations to Dottie! 🎓🐾

Dottie is certainly one of our quickest graduates, but she is also the youngest! Even though her attention span could be short, when Dottie was ready to learn, she soaked it in.

Training isn’t just about learning cues, and socialization isn’t just dragging your dog to the dog park. Dottie’s owner wanted her to be socialized properly and Jon helped guide her through the process. This desire to do things the right way certainly contributed to Dottie’s speedy development.

Way to go, Dottie! We are so proud of you. 💙

Congratulations to Gimli on his graduation! 🎓 🐾

Gimli did great during our training sessions despite his limited attention span. He had a bad experience at the dog park and we wanted to make sure this wasn’t imprinted. As a result, our last session was Rover's Ridge the Dog Park at White House where he got to have a positive interaction with another dog.

As big as Gimli is, obstacles can still be intimidating and his size can make you forget that he is still just a puppy. With lots of encouragement, trust, and patience, his owner was able to get him to overcome his hesitations.

Way to go, Gimli! We’re so proud of you! 💙

While many of the clients who contact Mad Dawgs are seeking traditional training plans, sometimes, dogs already have the basics down. Bailey is a perfect example of that. 🐾

Bailey was recently added to our Dawg Day Adventures program and she has made huge strides in just a short time. This has a lot to do with her owners reinforcing what is being worked on with Jon.

While splashing in the creek, a pair of dogs with their owners walked by on the path. Bailey automatically redirected her attention to Jon and got big praises for it. This was not a “bribed” action, but the result of working redirection skills to real world stressors. Lucky for us, Jon happened to catch it on video! 🦮📱

Say hello to Que! 👋🏻 🐾

Que is very cute and full of puppy energy. At first, her owners were told she could be a Heeler mix, which is a very active breed. However, during the last session, she gave Jon a look that was characteristic of a Jack Russel—a total game changer!

This little girl is sweet and very smart, but her attention span is as small as she is. Que is their first dog as adult owners and her accidents in the house have been a big challenge. With a potty plan, diligence, and supervision, we are hoping to eliminate this issue quickly.

We look forward to sharing her progress in the coming weeks!

Congratulations to Shadow and Maisie on their graduation! 🎓🐾

For their last session, Shadow and Maisie got a real world experience to test their skills. Both have been building their confidence and learning friendly greetings.

On this trip, Maisie overcame a big fear of roosters. 🐓 Her first experience was a 2’ tall rooster. On the way out of the store, we came across this huge one. She built up enough courage to have a sniff.

However, the biggest learners were the handlers. Understanding how leash pressure can change a situation, being aware of surroundings, always working at the dog’s pace, and having an “out” for the dog before they get overwhelmed are critical when bringing a dog in public.

Everyone did great and we are so proud of Shadow and Maisie for all of their hard work!

This is Kilo. 🐾

Like most dogs we work with at The Humane Society of Sumner County, they tend to have a hard history and just never given the proper chance for success.

Kilo is a long hauler at over 5️⃣0️⃣0️⃣ days at the HSSC.❗️

He does present some negative behaviors at the shelter, but when we get him out he is such a good boy. He listens to cues, he is a great leash walker and loves car rides. We always get compliments from everyone when we are out and about.

While Jon loves his time with him, he would really like to see Kilo go to a great home.

Mad Dawgs is offering a discount on training services to get him started when his human comes to his rescue. 🤍

Check out our comment section to see his recent adventure to Lowe's Home Improvement with Jon. 👇🏻 Also head over to the Humane Society’s page to see any additional information and share with your friends! Let’s find Kilo a forever home.

Say hello to Shadow! 👋🏻 🐾

Shadow’s owner came to Mad Dawgs seeking guidance for walks. Inside the house, he listens well and was able to learn many of the basic commands from her. However, walks have been a source of stress and poor communication.

One of the first things his owner stated is, “I know he’s a hound and being nose to the ground is instinct.” Mad Dawgs loves hearing statements like this. It not only shows the owner understands breed behaviors, but that they are willing to accept it and work with it.

Jon’s first recommendation was changing the equipment used on walks—such as a front attachment harness and a longer leash. He also went over some verbal walking cues and techniques. After just two sessions, the owner has seen major improvements. There is still work to be done, but, like anything, time and consistency are key.

We look forward to seeing Shadow’s progress over the coming weeks!
