We're trying to re-home this sweet and docile female cat, Sasha. She is currently living alone in an empty house that's for sale on a nearby Eastchester street. While she has her most basic needs met at this time (food/water), we need to find a more permanent home and can't leave her to the mercy of the new homeowners.

Sasha is an adult spayed tortie/dilute calico, very friendly, healthy, curious, and loves attention. It's very sad to see her there by herself being ignored while various people come and go. Do you know anyone interested in giving her a loving home? Any inquiries or interest please text to 347-257-0372. Please share!

Here's more info/details from the owner:
I am desperately looking to re-home my parents' cat. Her name is Sasha and she is the absolute sweetest girl in the entire world. I found her on the black horse pike in Atlantic City when she was super young and super pregnant. After she had her babies she was spayed and had a round of vaccinations. My parents have had to move into an apartment for 55+ and we’re unable to bring her. If you or anyone you know may be interested please reach out to me. I’ve been posting in various groups for rehoming/adopting animals in Westchester/Dutchess/Orange County for a while now to no avail. She truly is the sweetest girl and I just want her to find a family who will love her just as much as she loves back. She is amazing with children. She loves to bask in the sun and be petted. We are all absolutely devastated to have to re-home her and are praying to find someone to bring her in. Please please reach out if you have any further questions!

Cataracts are an opacity or “clouding” of the eye lens that prevents light from focusing properly on the retina. Left untreated, your pet may experience impaired vision or become blind. Routine eye exams by your family veterinarian can help prevent this.

RAISING DOG FRIENDLY CHILDREN
Teach children to be dog friendly before teaching dogs to be child friendly

I’m often asked - “How can I make my dog more child friendly?”

The question really should be - “How can I make my child more dog friendly?”

Children don’t come with an inborn ability to know how to treat dogs. It’s up to us to teach them.

I’m amazed that there aren’t more dog bites considering how often I see children treating dogs like stuffed toys.

If you think about it, dogs are actually amazingly tolerant and patient with people even when their attempts to communicate through their body language, that they’re really uncomfortable, are completely ignored or not understood.

As parents, it’s an important responsibility to teach our children about how to respect and behave around dogs.

Always supervise children and dogs, even if a dog seems relaxed and friendly.

Hurrah! We finally did it! The horrendous puppy mill pipeline is finally shut down in NYS now that the Governor signed the bill into law. Thank you to everyone who called, emailed and otherwise engaged in this massive and long-time campaign to end cruelty in puppy mills. The Governor's press release is below.

For Immediate Release: 12/15/2022
GOVERNOR KATHY HOCHUL

GOVERNOR HOCHUL SIGNS LEGISLATION TO END THE PUPPY MILL PIPELINE

Legislation (S.1130/A.4283) Bans the Sale of Dogs, Cats, and Rabbits at Retail Pet Stores

Allows Pet Stores to Charge Shelters Rent to Use Their Space for Adoptions

Governor Kathy Hochul today signed legislation (S.1130/A.4283) to ban the sale of dogs, cats, and rabbits at retail pet stores, aiming to end the puppy mill-to-pet store pipeline and stop abusive breeders. Based upon an agreement with the Legislature, this legislation will take effect in 2024 and will also allow pet stores to charge shelters rent to use their space for adoptions.

"Dogs, cats and rabbits across New York deserve loving homes and humane treatment," Governor Hochul said. "I'm proud to sign this legislation, which will make meaningful steps to cut down on harsh treatment and protect the welfare of animals across the state."

Legislation (S.1130/A.4283) aims to prevent the buying and selling of animals from large-scale, abusive breeders that lack proper veterinary care, food or socialization. Often times, these animals have health issues resulting from poor breeding and can cost families thousands of dollars in veterinary care. The legislation will continue to allow pet stores to host adoption services in conjunction with animal shelters or rescue organizations to help connect New Yorkers with animals in need of a home.

State Senator Michael Gianaris said, "Today is a great day for our four-legged friends and a big step forward in our fight against abusive and inhumane puppy mills. My thanks to Governor Hochul for standing up for the voiceless loving animals who are members of our families and deserve the respect we've shown them today."

Assemblymember Linda B. Rosenthal said, "I extend an enormous thank you to Governor Hochul for signing this legislation to shut down the puppy mill pipeline. New York State will no longer allow brutally inhumane puppy mills around the country to supply our pet stores and earn a profit off animal cruelty and unsuspecting consumers. By ending the sale of dogs, cats and rabbits in pet stores, shelters and rescues will be able to partner with these stores to showcase adoptable animals and place them into forever homes. Countless families will be spared the heartache of spending thousands on a beloved new pet that is genetically damaged and chronically ill. New York's role as a leader in preventing cruelty to animals will inspire other states to follow suit, and that is something the Governor and all of us can be proud to have accomplished."

It is the time of year when we see all sorts of Holiday themed treats for our pets. One of the most popular in stores are festive rawhide chews for dogs.

Often packaged in adorable stockings and embellished with cute decorations, they can be tempting to purchase. But you should think twice before adding one to your shopping cart! Most items like this are imported from non-regulated countries like China. It is always best to choose products made in USA when available. Rawhide in general is not fully digestible. It can pose health hazards from how they are made, including choking and intestinal obstruction.

While dogs need to chew, should be allowed to chew, selecting appropriate sizes and types are most important. There are a lot of digestible chews on the market. From bully sticks, gullet sticks, pigs' ears, cow ears to package "rawhide alternative" chews. Check out this article from FETCH by WebMD for more information on rawhide. https://pets.webmd.com/dogs/rawhide-good-or-bad-for-your-dog

While you may want treat your dog with something special this time of year, it is important to think about the safety of your dog. Butcher bones and packaged cooked beef bones, like you see in many stores, are not a good idea either. Cooked/raw marrow bones can splinter and are not digestible. Turkey, chicken, rib bones too...all above can splinter and effect the health of your dog. It is always smart to chat with your vet about healthy options to treat your dog, and visit our resource page for some fun suggestions, too! https://gahumane.org/resources/pet-tips/

Scout truly has grit! Please read his story. Posting for Animal Welfare League of Westchester.

"He came to us with the name, Scout but Sport would have been more fitting. He's been through so much and is, thankfully, on the road to recovery. He has taken his illnesses in stride and has not allowed them to break his spirit. Diabetes, leptospirosis, and pancreatitis, any one of which could have caused his death, but his strong will to live prevailed. Please help us continue to help him. His medical bills are astronomical. The Animal Welfare League of Westchester is a 501(c)(3) organization and contributions are tax deductible to the full extent of the law. We thank you and Scout thanks you even more!
Hopefully, Scout will be ready for adoption shortly. He ia approximately 4 years old and has a long loving life ahead of him Please contact us (914) 320-5991, if you are interested in adopting, or fostering, this good boy."

September is Animal Pain Awareness Month!
Animals suffer from pain just like people do. Pain comes in many forms: surgical pain, arthritis and cancer related pain, just to name a few. Acute pain is obvious and distressing. Chronic pain can be subtle, and masked as “getting old” or “slowing down.” Old age is not a disease, but pain is. There are many options to treat the various causes of pain in animals including pain medications, physical rehabilitation, acupuncture, laser therapy, and therapeutic massage.

If you feel your pet may be experiencing pain, please call our office to schedule an appointment with one of our veterinarians. We can help make your pet comfortable and living their best life!
