Where do I even start??
2024 has been a year to remember, our first year living in Texas!!
There’s so much to write about this past year, but it’s going to take a while to put that together.
I will say that I didn’t start out the show year thinking this is where we’d be, grateful is an understatement, proud doesn’t come close but it’s a good place to start. This hairy little cross bred Ranch Horse from Down Under showed up every show I took him to, 12 shows in total, 7 classes a show, that’s 84 classes. To get that many runs back home, it would take 4 years & driving 20,000km to get it done. Then in May Red started showing him in the Open Division while I continued to show him the Green Horse Division, at this point I decided we could really make a run at the Year End Saddle!
Last night at the Arrowheart Ranch Awards Banquet, Like A Boss aka Bruce was awarded the Year End Saddle for High Point Green Horse 🏆Sponsored by Town & Country Realty.
Shaina - your sponsorship of these saddles is above & beyond, I’m so proud to have recieved one, & take it from me, winning my first trophy saddle at 43 years old is way cool 😎

Red piloted Bruce to 3rd place overall for the year in the Open Division, that is one helluva year for the horse our ranch pony, especially considering he didn’t start showing him til May.

Winkin At The Crowd achieved Reserve High Point in the Green Horse Division, showing in all 7 classes at every show from May to December.

There’s so many people to acknowledge & thank who have made this win possible.
Mick, Martin & Sam- you’ve been such a special part of our first year in Texas, to have an Aussie network here is priceless & at times you’ve been the thread to hold me togetger when I felt like I was falling apart 🙌🏾I’m so glad you could be there with us for that night.
April - the best announcer/arena boss money can get. If not for you I’m sure I would have missed half my classes 🫣
Dr Richard, you’ve kept these boys sound through a fairly demanding year, always on call when they weren’t feeling 110%

Last weekend we headed out to East Texas to beautiful Athens, both our beautiful geldings qualified for the ranch horse championship show by showing successfully at Arrowheart Ranch this season.
We had so much fun travelling with all our show friends, especially Faith Redman & her steed Johnny, cheering & supporting each other, it’s what horse showing is all about.

Last night we took Hook out to the 4D at KB Ranch, just to see how he handled a different environment. He has Such a “can do attitude” & really is so easy to get along with!!!

He is handsome, gentle & handy!!!

If you’re looking for an all around, reliable usin’ horse, then this is your guy! Turn back, gather, sort, pleasure ride, ranch versatility, rope, he’s happy to try anything.
In recent years Hook has been a pleasure riding horse, previous to that he’s been used for Ranch work, worked in a feed yard, done some roping & had plenty of outside miles. Ridden by lady & competent youth, he’s very user friendly.

We see this a lot, especially in young horses who have had their head forced down & don’t know how to round up from behind

When your horse lowers their head to the height of their withers, the funnicular portion of their nuchal ligament (the cord like structure which runs from their withers to their poll) will traction on their supraspinous ligament (which runs over the top of their thoracic and lumbar spinous processes).

As the nuchal ligament tractions on the supraspinous ligament, the early thoracic spinous processes draw forwards and apart.

As the horse steps under from behind, via engaging the hindlimbs and shortening through their abdominals, the supraspinous ligament over the lumbar spinous processes will traction towards the horse's tail, drawing their lumbar spinous processes backwards and apart.

These are key mechanisms in kissing spines rehabilitation.

However - if your horse has muscular tension around the neck and back muscles, the efficacy of this ligament system may be inhibited, potentially creating pain and, if prolonged, tissue remodelling (e.g. ligament thickening, lesions or bony adaptation).

This means that, whilst we can look at training practices set to target supporting these systems - you have to be able to OBSERVE if the exercises are actually acheiving the desired effect.

You can track your eye over your horse's topline and see where the dysfunction might be occuring by literally looking at the skeletal and soft tissue system at a standstill and in motion.

I think this has to be one of my favourite assessment tools to help me to help horses with their movement ❤️
