Happy National Trivia Day! 🎉 Dive into the fascinating history of Banning Mills with these little-known facts that showcase the innovation, resilience, and unique charm of our community. How many of these did you already know?

Pioneering Paper: Did you know Banning Mills was one of the first places in the country to experiment with using pine wood pulp to make paper? This innovative process helped shape the modern paper industry.

Electricity Trailblazer: Local lore claims Banning was home to the first electric lights in Georgia, potentially as early as 1880. While this is debated, our cotton mill was confirmed to have electric lighting by 1888. The owner of the mills at the time, Arthur Hutcheson, bought a dynamo from Thomas Edison himself on a trip to NY. People traveled from as far as Atlanta to see the lights come on.

A Mill of Many Trades: Over its 100+ years of operation, Banning Mills produced everything from paper and cotton textiles to rubber grips for bicycles!

“Sock Town” Origins: The area was once nicknamed "Sock Town" when the former Amis Mill was converted into a knitting mill in the early 1900s, producing ribbed socks.

Height of Industry: At its peak, the cotton mill at Banning Mills produced over 70,000 pounds of yarns and rope per month and employed 125 to 150 workers. The paper mill at its peak ranked #1 in Georgia with an output of 8,000 lbs. of book and news or 5,500 lbs. of manilla paper in a 24-hour period.

Historic Conservation: Today, the property of Banning Mills includes ruins of four mill complexes, all preserved as part of the area's rich industrial history.

Stone by Stone: Many of the mill’s structures were built using massive stones blasted and shaped on-site from the gorge walls, showcasing the incredible craftsmanship of the time.

Baseball, Anyone?: The Banning Nine, the baseball team of the Banning Mill Village competed fiercely with local rivals like Whitesburg and Carrollton from 1914 through 1948.
