cubed Christine movie 1958 Plymouth tribute scrap junkyard scene Stephen King

Countless 1958 Plymouths have been restored in tribute to Stephen King's 1983 film "Christine". There has even been an authentic recreation of the rusted, smoking hulk that Arnie idles in to Darnell's Auto Wrecking.
I conceived this project as a tribute to the final view of Christine. I began by gathering frame by frame shots of the movie. From these I identified the pieces that composed the elements of the cube. First, a red vehicle, then bumpers which were sawed in half, a silver painted wheel with tire, and a grille with trim moldings. I was uncertain whether the cubed vehicle in the movie was a 1958 Plymouth, so I consulted with old car collectors in an attempt to determine what the cubed vehicle was. The crusher squeezes the metal so tight that identification is nearly impossible, and none of us could say for sure. We did know for a fact that they did not sacrifice the wingtipped bumpers, the rarest and most difficult parts of the car to source. Whether the body was a 1958 Plymouth or not, was undeterminable. As it is said, "The purpose of art is to fool the eye."
Fast forward to 2018, the year I began this project. I gathered these pieces for the project, beginning with a rusty 1962 Chevrolet. That was the easy part. Finding the crusher to cube it was more difficult. The cube style crusher was common until 30+ years ago when it was replaced by the pancake style crusher. The reason was simple: Maintenance. Cube style crushers required more frequent adjustments and repairs. As they aged, they began to be recycled themselves. After searching, I was able to find one still in operation 2 1/2 hours away. It was aging, but still functional. The man who owned and operated this machine was very much a modern day embodiment of Darnell himself. He was curt, somewhat rude, and a bit irritated to have me in his way. After questioning the whats and whys of what I was asking him to do, eventually he reluctantly agreed to squeeze it into a cube. Processing the vehicle was not an exact science. The car body, bumpers, wheels, and trim parts were dropped in the machine.
What emerged is as authentic as can be recreated, and is instantly recognizable to fans of the film. When it is viewed, one can almost hear the tune "Let's go, let's go, let's go little darlin'..." begin to play. This is not a kinetic piece; however, the curled trim pieces are flexible enough to sway just as they did in the final scene of the movie.
This sculpture piece stands alone as an art object. It shows the logical conclusion to a worn out consumer good. It is the cubed embodiment of our dead dreams in chrome and steel. It is as much a tribute to the film as it is a societal critique on our throwaway consumer culture.
This is a unique object that will be a showcase piece for any fan of the film. It is an authentic creation of me, sculptor Timothy Stangohr. It will come with signed documentation by the artist.
This cube is dense and massive. It scaled out at approximately 900 pounds. Shipping can be arranged by local pickup, or can go through Fastenal's 3PL freight service. Please note that this service is not offered to California. It would have to be shipped to a neighboring state such as Nevada or Arizona and picked up there. I will crate it and put it on a skid at no charge. If you wish to make arrangements with your own shipper, I will drop it off at the truck freight terminal of your choice in the Wichita/south central Kansas area. Please ask all shipping questions before purchase, so there are no surprises.
