🦊🌿 As fox mating season approaches and the nights become filled with their captivating sounds, we want to assure you that there's no need for alarm. The unique vocalisations you're hearing are a natural part of fox behaviour during this season, and they are perfectly normal.

Male foxes utilise a combination of barks, yips, and howls to mark their territories and establish dominance. Despite the strong nature of these vocalisations, they are simply the foxes' way of communicating, seeking a mate, and discouraging rivals.

Female foxes are known for emitting prolonged, loud, high-pitched screams as they seek a mate, signifying their active involvement in the mating process. Despite the potential alarm caused by these vocalisations, they are a vital and natural aspect of the foxes' mating behaviour, playing a crucial role in their reproductive cycle. These calls can last for extended periods, occasionally up to 30 minutes, reflecting the duration of the mating activity.

If you happen to observe two foxes in a 'copulatory lock,' where they are joined rear-to-rear (as seen in the photo), please be reassured that this is a normal occurrence and not a cause for concern.

So, while the sounds of fox mating season may be intriguing and intense, rest assured that they are all part of the natural order of things. In fact, these calls herald the promise of new life as fox cubs will soon join the ecosystem. 🦊🦊🦊🧡

Gambit joined the Wild Spirit “pack” in December of 2022, meaning he is celebrating his second Wild Spirited anniversary!

Gambit's owner realized he had started to outgrow his environment physically, mentally, and emotionally, and felt the best thing he could do for his animal was find him a more suitable home – one where he would have the space and resources needed to thrive.

In addition, Gambit is the younger brother of Sox, a female wolfdog that came to Wild Spirit in October of 2020 as a result of extreme stress and anxiety that failed to resolve despite her owner’s efforts.

Knowing this, Gambit’s owner wondered whether Sox might do better with one of her family members, especially considering she and Gambit are only a year apart in age and spent a great deal of time together during their youth.

After discussing our thoughts at length, we agreed to take a chance on Sox and Gambit as a possible pair, crossing our fingers and toes that it would work out for everyone in the end! In order to help assess their initial introductions, Gambit’s owner drove him from Ohio to New Mexico, where he spent the next three days coming out to visit, getting updates, and providing his own feedback on how things seemed to be going. By the end of the third day, we all felt comfortable with the new pair, and they have thrived together ever since.

Once Gambit settled into his new home, he became a fairly confident boy. He still prefers not to be touched, but makes an exception for his favorite humans. Above all else, he enjoys his large enclosure and his neighbors, who he plays with at length through their shared fence line.

Happy anniversary gorgeous boy!
