Meet the Owner

Sam Gleason was born in Wichita, Kansas to a nonequestrian family. Despite this, her persistence landed her in regular lessons by age 5 and she secured her first pony at 10. Dreaming of a career path related to horses was a prominent fixture of her adolescence. Like many unsure of how to enter the industry, Sam originally wanted to be a Veterinarian but then Sunshine aka Sunner came into her life. Sam was only 9 and Sunner was a 2-year-old unstarted and unruly miniature horse. Never one to turn down the opportunity to be around a horse, Sam took on the challenge of training her and successfully turned Sunner into a wonderful riding, cart, trick, and show horse. Her love of training blossomed further when Pepper entered her life as a teenager. He needed a total restart, and she spent a year solely on groundwork with him. This solidified her career path and desire to be a trainer. In high school she bought a young filly, Flicka, to start. This mare became the first horse she started from square one. William Woods University became an obvious choice to continue her equestrian education. Sam graduated with a double major in Equestrian Science and Equine Administration. Since graduation, she has returned to Wichita and started Left Barrel First LLC. Sam lives and breathes horses; every aspect of her life reflects this. Horse shows are her vacations, and on the weekends you can find her at a wide variety of competitions. She adores barrel racing and speed events, but you can also find her competing in the western all-around and miniature horse events.

This big girl would love to make it under someone's Christmas tree this year!

Aisle Have Another/ Aisle Have Anotherone is a double registered AQHA/ solid APHA bay mare. She's a 2018 16hh big-bodied girl. "Remi" goes either Western or English. She's been over fences, shown on the flat, and taken out trail riding. She's delightful out on the trails and I think would be well suited to someone who doesn't want to take things too seriously and wants a horse to spoil.

Remi is not for a beginner rider as she has some get up and go to her as well as the occasional cold and wind-blown goofiness. If you can get past that she's lovely. She's friendly, loves people, and has comfortable and lofty gaits.

She has lived both outside and in a stall. Big group or single partner. She's currently outside 24/7 and only brought in for bad weather. She does like to live the life of blankets and fly boots but takes care of her clothes. She's had the same blanket for at least 3-4 years.

As far as maintenance goes, she does require front shoes. She's up to date on vaccinations and teeth. She was last dewormed 12/7

Please welcome Woodys Mighta Plain to the LBF herd. I purchased this girl as a winter project. She will be here the next few months to grow up, get all her groundwork done, and will be started riding early next year. She will be available early spring!

I have a weird tradition where all my personal horses have 6 lettered names. So we have gone with Sienna for her barn name. I look forward to getting to know her better but she already reminds me so much of Flicka when she was this age.

Bless her honestly. This is one of my personal horses that got the last month and a half off. She just felt tired to me in several ways and I think it did her a lot of good considering how she felt today.

Thanksgiving 🦃

I know I have had so much to be grateful for this year. Sunner my mini horse is thriving after having a major injury and surgery in 2023. Business is going really well and I moved to being full time this year. And I had the absolute privilege of starting and training some incredible horses this year. My personal string also showed well and my mom even started riding Flicka (horse in the picture).

Feel free to share something you are thankful for in the comments. I would love to read them. ❤️

This is Tucker. If you have spent any time around me in the last year you have probably heard all about him. Tucker or Tuck as I often call him is a 5 year old ex-bucking horse.

I first met Tucker via Facebook in May 2023 when I saw him run through the kill pen. However I did not buy him from the kill pen. I watched as he a long with many other reject bucking horses were sold to various people. Then a week or so later I was scrolling the Facebook sale horse pages and he reappeared. Almost before I really considered what I was doing I hit the message button and learned he had been bought by a lady that lived in Ohio. She bought him sight unseen and didn't realize that he would be wild. I was in a weird place in my life having just graduated school, my mini horse suffering a major injury, not going to Pinto World like we planned, and just trying to start my business and being unsure of how successful it would be in the begining. Oh and it was near my birthday and what better gift than to buy yourself a horse.

He was in my round pen within the week. He had no name and was skinny, wild, feet in horrible condition, and wanted absolutely nothing to do with me. But he was mine. I named him Tucker and began trying to win him over. He was my first unhandled horse and I'm not embarrassed to admit that I did cry after our first touch. My plan was never to keep him long term but the reality is he is sensitive, shy, and heavily believes in stranger danger. It's a weird realization to know that I am his window into the world. It feels like a lot of pressure sometimes to make every new thing a positive experience. I have learned so much in my time with him because he challenges me to be my best for him everyday. Sometimes it's incredibly frustrating but it's also incredibly rewarding. He is a beautiful soul to be around and I have loved getting to know him and I would like to share him with you all too.

LBF had a wonderful weekend at the Spooks and Spots Pinto Show with client horse JNJ Stole My Pay aka Travis. Travis came to me at the begining of the month very green. He had been ridden but only at a walk with a few steps of trot. By show time only 3 weeks later he was able to walk, trot, lope, developing a solid stop and back, started on both his pivots, and isolating and moving his ribcage, hindquarters, and shoulders.

This was his first show and he had some wonderful moments placing in the halter, and getting some well deserved top 2 and 3 placings in the HUS classes with his owner behind a very very nice all-arounder. He also showed well in the Western Pleasure and had some great moments where everything came together for him.

Overall a wonderful show for him to top off a great month of learning. And I enjoyed getting to pull out all my Western pleasure attire again.

Also please enjoy my outfit on the third picture. I had to warm him up for the HUS classes but also be ready for WP after. It was definitely a look.

Very excited to try out our new Bale Bonnet. If we end up liking it I plan to add more so each pen will have one.

This will help cover the hay in the event of weather so we have less hay waste but yet will still offer free choice hay. Free choice hay has so many benefits to horses and I want to be able to offer that for all my clients. However it also has to make sense and work for us and the horses as well.

October 🍁🍂

My horse exchange is well underway and the barn is full again this month. Feeling super blessed to be surrounded by horses and this being my full time job.

I have several goals for October and I'm hoping writing them down will help keep me more accountable.

1) I want to work harder on social media and put out more content. I film a lot so I just need to do the editing and posting part.

2) Finalize and publish the website.

3) Make Tucker more of a priority. This one is hard because I own Tuck and client horses must come first. But he doesn't deserve to just continue to be placed on my back burner all the time. He only has about 3 rides and we need to bump those numbers. Looping back to the first one I would love to create a whole series of videos of training him. He has been fascinating for me to learn from and I've adapted several of my methods to better suit him.

Gus will be finishing a 30 day tune-up with me at the end of the month. He's got a great foundation to him that could easily be built upon for the ranch horse division. DIY/Ammy friendly.

Will need to develop his trot for the extended verses regular but he could easily get started this winter with some shows while he is still eligible to be in a snaffle.

If I had him for longer I would go ahead and get him showing but owner wants to get him moved.

Why did I name it Left Barrel First LLC if I do so much more than barrel horses?

Left Barrel First gets its name from Hopelessly Bob. "Pepper" is a Pony of America gelding that encouraged me to fall in love with speed events and training in general. He has always been a unique horse and the way he ran barrels was no different. While most horses prefer running to the right barrel first Pepper preferred to run the other way and headed to the Left Barrel First. The name now symbolizes the idea that individuality and a different approach are not something to shy away from but rather be encouraged to help find success.

Client horse Aisle Have Another aka "Remi" returned to the show pen last weekend. She shows the Hunter Under Saddle and I entered her in a halter class just for the experience. This was a new venue for us so we enjoyed seeing the sights somewhere new. She placed very well in a good sized halter mares class pulling a 3rd and 6th. Then we just did the Walk/trot Hunter Under Saddle division as she still is new to the show pen and shows her nerves a bit. Remi handled it well though and won all her under saddle classes. When she relaxes and stretches down she sure looks and feels good. This is only her third show and we have several more planned through the fall and winter. She gets better every trip out and she gives me something different than the barrel horses so I always enjoy it too.
