I don't own Nike on paper but he sure has a special place in my heart. I fell in love with him as a baby, I was the one who named him, and now he lives with me and I have the absolute honor of helping him become a barrel horse. I found this picture today that I took of him when he was just a little guy. I have loved being apart of his life from the begining. ❤️

These horses truly become apart of my family no matter if I know them since birth or get just 30, 60, or 90 days.

I'll give you 1 guess who is 700 pounds and who is 1500 pounds. There also is a 9 inch difference in height.

Do the maintenance. Horses work so hard for us that the least we can do is keep them happy and comfortable. Nike has had some out of character incidents recently that ended up attributing to his teeth needing done. He seemed really uncomfortable when ridden and had a head tossing/ high headed way of going. This is not like him at all and I'm a huge advocate for the horse so I wanted to get this sorted out for him before I continued his training. So I went looking for what could possibly be going on and found his teeth incredibly sharp. Well yesterday we finally made it into the vet. Today I rode him again and wow what an immediate difference. He wanted to be soft and collect and seemed happy to go around. This is much more like the horse I am used to. Bottom line do the maintenance. Check the teeth. If something feels wrong do some investigating. I'm so happy this kiddo is back feeling like himself.

As we enter Horse Show Season
1. Horses don’t get broke at home. Be brave and enter!
2. EVERY disappointment at the show is a learning opportunity..... Be humble, be open to change.
3. Everyone gets nervous. Everyone has bad days. Everyone makes mistakes. Literally: EVERYONE!
4. Don’t watch others in the warmup ring and start changing what you have been doing - if you see something cool or you want to step up your game that’s homework for after the show!
5. When we run out of knowledge, we often punish our horses. Seek help instead.
6. Be a competitor! But be a horseman first. There is always someone watching who sees you as a role model.
7. Supporting your fellow competitors and engaging with people will enrich your show life.
8. Know the rules of competition! Make sure your attire and tack is legal. Read the rule book, ask questions and be well prepared.
9. Have FUN, don’t sweat the small stuff!

Tank top in February. It's like summer! 🏝️🌞

Had conditioning rides today on some of the horses.

Flicka had a weird thing a couple weeks ago where she ran a low grade fever so she had some time off and last week I started riding her again. We did 10 minutes walk, 10 trot, 5 lope, and 10 walking. Big circles with no sharp turns. That was plenty for her.

Nike has been in consistent barrel horses training so he had 10 walk, 5 trot, 10 loping, and then cooling out. He did smallish circles to help build up that hind end. I was happy to see him get a bit out of breath today and work. I breezed him the other day and he recovered so quickly which was great.

Remi consistently struggles with soundness and pulled a shoe a couple of weeks ago so she had a 30 minute walking lunge.

Everyone's workout matched what they needed and they all got something out of it which was the goal. I try to do 1-2 conditioning rides or workouts a week depending on how the horse is feeling and how broke they are. All of these guys are regular riders so it's part of their schedule.

🍁Working on self haltering 🍁
Tucker came to me as a reject bucking horse. They aren't halter broke. He used to just wear a halter and drag rope around all the time but has proven that he can be caught without one. Sure it would be easier to leave that halter and line on him. It would certainly be faster to just walk out there and pick up that rope to have him caught. But that's not going to benefit him in the long run. He needs to understand that he can have a person show up in his paddock and be able to catch him. Right now that is using positive reinforcement but eventually he will become less and less dependent on that and I will be able to just walk up to him and slide a halter on his face.

✨For Sale✨
Aisle Bet "Nike"
2020 AQHA and Solid APHA Gelding
Spent a season on the track but that was not his scene. Has more go than woah and wants to work. He moves nicely off leg, bends and counterbends, and pivots. He has been out on the trails and crossed water as well as hauled off property. He is the same guy off property as he is on. Super nice horse and one of my favorites I've had in for training. Easy to get along with for both horses and humans. Currently barefoot with no maintenance. Ready to get going on the barrel pattern. He has loped through a couple times and wants to get it figured out. Needs to end up on someone's trailer to get serious on the pattern.

Flicka at open arena this week. Horses in training frequently get the opportunity to travel off property for a variety of reasons. Showing, trail riding, open arena, or just coming along for the ride. Having positive traveling experiences creates a confident horse that is ready to go as they step off the trailer.

Chasing Midnight's Shadow "Flicka" and client horse Aisle Have Another "Remi" had a great weekend at the KSHA Fall Classic. This was Remi's first show and she had some jitters but still put her best foot forward and had a great learning experience. We definitely have more homework to do now that we are back home. Flicka also displayed some young moments in the HUS classes but quieted down nicely for her western and ranch classes. This was her first show going 1 handed in a curb but she really took it all in stride. She even won a neck garland and seemed very proud of it! We have a whole slate of winter shows that we are looking forward to attending and continuing to work on our fundamentals. 🥇🎉

LBF's Flicka and client horse Remi are enjoying being nice and dry in our stalls on this rainy day.
