July 31st was the last day for our YMCA students (Maxwell not pictured)
Each year the YMCA sends us up to 5 students free of charge to us and paid by a grant through the Y. These kids are taught how to write a resume, how to prepare and dress for an interview , first aid, CPR and a long list of other skills. These kids come in better prepared than most adults. This is a wonderful opportunity for any teenager and it’s been great for us as well. Two of the four have stayed and will continue working to help throughout the school year.

Summer is here, and so are pesky ticks. Unfortunately, most tick-borne illnesses that affect dogs don’t have a vaccine. To keep Fido safe this summer:

1. Check for ticks daily, especially after time outdoors.
2. Pay close attention paws, ears, around the tail and under the collar.
3. Remove any ticks with tweezers using a steady upward motion.
4. Observe your dog after tick removal for signs of illness.

If you notice changes in your dog’s appetite or behavior, contact your veterinarian. Your vet can also recommend tick-prevention products for your pets. For information on preventing ticks in your yard, visit https://www.cdc.gov/ticks/avoid/in_the_yard.html.

The 4th of July is fast approaching!

Nationally July 5th is the busiest day for animal shelters due to nervous pets escaping while their families celebrate.

Here are some helpful tips to keep your pup safe. Another option is to board them overnight where they can be careful in a calm neutral setting during the festivities. We have a few spaces available -- call today!
