Meet K9 Jet—our unstoppable three-legged search and rescue dog. 🐾

Born with a birth defect that led to a leg amputation, Jet didn’t slow down—he became a certified SAR partner with Dr. Mj. Last year, he faced his biggest medical challenge yet: resistant ear infections that required bilateral TECA-BO surgery (removal of both ear canals). The surgery left him deaf, but thanks to hand signals and e-collar communication, Jet is still on the job—saving lives. 💪

Here’s the fun part: unlike most pets who end up with floppy ears post-surgery, Jet’s stayed perfectly pointy—so convincing that even other vets can’t believe he had the procedure! That’s thanks to Dr. Mj’s surgical finesse.

At home, though? Jet trades in his hero vest for wigs and lion’s manes, humoring his mom’s antics with patience and charm. 🦁👩‍🎤

Tripod. Deaf. Life-saving partner. Occasional lion impersonator. ❤️

Jumping into a pile of leaves is full of fall fun! 🍁🍂🍁🍂 However, this environment can also be a breeding ground for bacteria and mold. Here are a few outdoor hazards to watch out for and tips to help keep your pets safe this season:

🍁 Monitor your pets when they are outside exploring new fall foliage that may be toxic.
🍁 Clear out any small sticks or items that may damage their gastrointestinal tract if ingested.
🍁 Inspect their fur regularly for ticks, fleas, or small wounds.
🍁 Check paw pads to ensure they don’t have any foxtails, thorns, or other materials stuck between their fur.

Beware of wild mushrooms growing around your home this year 🍄 There are 4 main categories of mushrooms to watch out for:

Hepatotoxic mushrooms are the most toxic. Owners may see their pet nibble on this mushroom but do not become concerned because their pet looks fine after. But 6-24 hours later, GI symptoms start to occur. Mild stomach upset can progress into liver failure if not treated immediately.

Neurotoxic & Nephrotoxic mushrooms affect the nervous system and potentially the kidneys and liver as well. Signs include weakness, lack of coordination, tremors, hallucinations, vocalizations, disorientation, agitation, and seizures.

Gastrointestinal toxic mushrooms can cause GI upset, including vomiting and diarrhea. Out-patient treatment may suffice, but hospitalization is often required to restore fluid balance.

If you suspect your pet has eaten a wild mushroom (of any kind), don’t wait. Contact VESH immediately. If you can, take a sample of the mushroom with you. This will help the vet determine how they can best help your pet. (316) 262-5321

⭐ Meet Starr ⭐

When Starr first came to VESH, her leg was unstable and infected. Her implants had failed, her bones were not aligned, and her fracture was not stable. To give her the best chance at healing, our team removed the implants, started aggressive antibiotics, and placed her in a cast.

At her one-week recheck, her fracture had stabilized, and with continued care, her infection cleared and her bone began to form strong callus. She was walking comfortably again, but because she’s such an active dog, there was a small risk of re-injury.

To provide long-term stability, our surgical team used virtual surgical planning to perform a minimally invasive procedure and place a permanent buttressing plate — like an internal supportive splint — to help evenly distribute forces along the bone.

Today, Starr is happy, healthy, and back to enjoying life with her family! 🐾💙
