We’re excited to introduce Dr. Mariajesus Soula, known as “Dr. Mj,” as our new specialty veterinary surgeon! Dr. Mj is passionate about minimally invasive surgery and wound care. Hailing from Miami, Florida, she shares her home with a diverse group of pets, including two German Shepherds, a Rottweiler, three cats, and a group of crested geckos that she breeds. Pets can be curious, and they often explore their world with their mouths! 😋 This can sometimes lead to swallowing indigestible objects which may result in a bowel or gastrointestinal obstruction.

The treatment for bowel obstruction can vary and depends on the severity of the condition. In some cases, a blockage may pass on its own. In others, surgery may be required.

Obstructions are very serious and may even result in death, so it is important to see your veterinarian if you discover or suspect your pet swallowed something indigestible.

Gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV), commonly referred to as bloat, is a critical medical issue for dogs that can be fatal if left untreated.

Bloat occurs when gas or food stretches a dog's stomach, causing it to rotate and trap gas inside while blocking the blood supply to the stomach. This condition can develop quickly and without warning, making immediate medical attention essential.

Here are a few ways you can help prevent bloat in your dog:

🐶 Encourage your dog to eat slowly
🐶 Feed smaller, controlled portions
🐶 Avoid feeding them right after exercise or when they are over-excited/panting heavily
🐶 Keep them at a healthy weight

If you suspect your dog has bloat, please contact us immediately at (316) 262-5321.

In the unfortunate event that your pet becomes injured and unable to walk, we understand that transporting them to the emergency vet can be a daunting task. To assist you in this critical moment, we have compiled essential tips for ensuring your pet receives the medical attention they need safely and effectively:

🚑 Towels, blankets, bedsheets, or pet beds can double as a makeshift stretcher to carefully carry and lift your pet into the car.

🚑 If you live alone and have a large dog breed, consider investing in a wheeled pet stretcher or wagon for emergencies.

🚑 Keep in mind that injured animals may bite or scratch out of fear or pain. Be cautious when moving your pet. For dogs, using a temporary muzzle may be necessary to prevent bites. With cats, approach them from behind and wrap them in a thick towel or blanket for your protection.

🚑 Minimize handling of the injured animal to avoid exacerbating their injuries or risking your safety.

🚑 If possible, call the emergency vet ahead of time to let them know you’re on your way—this helps them prepare for your arrival.

In case of an emergency with your beloved pet, please contact us immediately at (316) 262-5321. We encourage you to save our contact information for quick access during such critical times.

Just like us, it's vital to stay on top of your pet's vaccines and immunizations. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), here are 5 reasons why you should vaccinate your pets:

💉 Vaccinations prevent many pet illnesses.
💉 Vaccinations can help avoid costly treatments for diseases that can be prevented.
💉 Vaccinations prevent diseases that can be passed between animals and also from animals to people.
💉 Diseases prevalent in wildlife, such as rabies and distemper, can infect unvaccinated pets.
💉 In many areas, local or state ordinances require certain vaccinations of household pets.

Don't wait! Contact your primary care veterinarian today to ensure your pet's vaccinations are up to date and keep them healthy.

August is ! Are you curious as to why your pet keeps scratching? Not sure how to provide them with some relief? Itchy skin could signify flea allergy dermatitis, hotspots, atopic dermatitis, or a skin infection.

It’s best to identify that there is an issue early as this makes it easier to treat!
Treatment options may include applying anti-parasitic ear drops, medication to treat infections caused by scratching, and ongoing parasite prevention. To identify the best treatment for your pet's condition, always consult with your primary care veterinarian for guidance.

08/03/2024

Keep your pets safe this summer by keeping them away from blue-green algae - aka cyanobacteria - which thrives in bodies of fresh water when the weather is 75+ degrees and sunny. Cyanobacteria is incredibly toxic and is known to cause poisoning in dogs, cats, livestock, wildlife, birds, fish, and even humans!

Pets can develop poisoning when they drink from, or even swim in, contaminated water sources. This algae may appear as pea-green-looking paint or as a green slime and is typically found in ponds and lakes, but can be present in oceans, fresh water, damp soil, outdoor fountains, and even on rocks.

If your pet is exposed to blue-green algae signs may develop in as little as a few minutes or may take up to 12 hours to arise. If blue-green algae is ingested, it can cause severe neurologic or liver damage. Symptoms may include drooling, disorientation, weakness, vomiting, excessive panting, collapse, seizures, respiratory failure, and could be fatal.

If you suspect your pet has been exposed to blue-green algae, immediately contact us at (316) 262-5321. You can also connect with the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435.

Do dogs need sunscreen? Just like people, dogs can get sunburned and suffer the associated consequences. If your dog is a hairless breed or has a white and/or thin coat, they are at higher risk. However, human sunscreen shouldn't be used on dogs due to potentially toxic ingredients.

Here is an article from the AKC with additional info on sun protection and sunscreen for dogs: https://www.akc.org/expert-advice/health/do-dogs-need-sunscreen/

If you’re not sure what’s best for your dog, ask your veterinarian for advice for your specific breed. ☀🐶☀

With summer in full swing, it's essential to ensure the safety of our beloved pets. Here are some important reminders:

☑️ Know the symptoms of overheating in pets, such as excessive panting, difficulty breathing, increased heart rate, drooling, seizures, bloody stool, and vomiting.

☑️ NEVER leave your animals unattended in a parked vehicle, even with the window cracked. Studies show that cracking the window has minimal effect on the car's interior temperature.

☑️ Educate your family and friends about the dangers of leaving pets in hot cars to help them keep their animals safe.

For more hot weather safety tips, you can read this informative article from the ASPCA: [Hot Weather Safety Tips](https://www.aspca.org/pet-care/general-pet-care/hot-weather-safety-tips). Feel free to share it with your fellow animal lovers!

Did you know that it only takes 6 minutes for a dog to overheat in a hot vehicle? Even with the windows down or parked in the shade, pets can still face lifelong or fatal consequences.

Our best advice is simple: never leave your dog in the car. Take them with you or leave them at home with plenty of water and shade. They will eagerly greet you when you return!

Let's keep our furry friends safe and happy!

As we gear up for the upcoming 4th of July celebrations, it's important to remember that our furry friends may not be as excited about the fireworks as we are. As a responsible pet parent, it's crucial to be aware of the potential stress and anxiety that loud noises can cause for our beloved pets.

To ensure the safety and well-being of your furry family members, I urge you to schedule a visit with your primary veterinarian prior to the holiday. They can provide helpful tips and strategies to help ease your pet's stress and make the holiday a more enjoyable experience for them.

Let's all make sure to keep our pets safe and sound during this festive time. Wishing you and your furry companions a happy and stress-free 4th of July! 🐾🎆

Attention all pet owners! As much as we never want to think about our beloved furry friends getting lost, it's important to be prepared in case it ever happens. That's where microchips come in - they can truly be lifesavers! Not only do they provide a permanent form of identification for your pet, but they can also reunite them with you in the unfortunate event they become separated from you.

If your pet is already chipped, this is a friendly reminder to make sure your contact information is up to date and any recent changes regarding their medical health are reflected. We never want to miss out on the chance to bring our lost pets back home safely. So let's all take a moment to ensure our furry companions are equipped with the best possible chances of being reunited with us. Share this post with other pet owners to spread the word about the importance of microchipping our pets. Thank you for being responsible and loving pet owners! 🐾
