๐Ÿ• TRAINING TIP TUESDAY ๐Ÿ•

Today we will be talking about feedback and giving exciting feedback to your dog. Timing is everything, imagine you have 2 seconds to tell your dog they are doing it right. Humans are great at pointing out mistakes, but slow to praise when things are done well. The more praise the quicker your dog learns.

Would you really listen to feedback from Ben Stein? The teacher from Peanuts? No. You need to be exciting when you are giving your dog feedback. Put a little pep in your feedback (not too much, we aren't having a party).

As the temperature warms up we want to remind you of heat safety for your dog. In terms of training, this means always check the temperature of the concrete before you train. When possible train in the grass and in the shade.

We recently had a client send us a message about a huge success ๐ŸŽ‰ she and her dog ๐Ÿ• just had. Here is what she had to say :

Reactive Class Saved My Dogโ€™s Life

Panic set in when I discovered my canine pal had disappeared after a series of highly unlikely/unusual mishaps. We had just endured a major storm the night before with downed tree limbs and power lines and general chaos on our street. I had just seen her 30 minutes earlier! In dismay I called out her name but was heartbroken at the thought she was probably already halfway across town, lost. My mind frantically raced with โ€œreactive dog outcomeโ€ scenarios.

But moments after calling for her, she came! I was never so relieved to see her running to me from who-knows-where. I was elated watching this once skittish, apprehensive pup now running back to me as a self-assured, obedient dog with a recall that quite possibly saved her life. Thatโ€™s what Reactive Tier 1 and Tier 2 did for us. The training at Family Dog is by far the most important investment weโ€™ve made for our dogs.

How long should training sessions be? 3-5 minutes.

Keep your training sessions short and sweet, always end before you think you should instead of waiting for failure.

๐Ÿ• TRAINING TIP TUESDAY ๐Ÿ•

How many times should you give a cue? ONE.

If you are using 'sit, sit, sit, sit, sit' until the dog sits your cue could become 'sit, sit, sit, sit, sit'. Wait, be patient and let your dog think - sometimes the longer they think the bigger the lesson.

๐Ÿ• TRAINING TIP TUESDAY ๐Ÿ•

Where should you train? HERE, THERE, AND EVERYWHERE.

Train in your front yard, in the house, in your back yard, in a park, in the hardware store, in the pet store. Just because your dog has perfected cues and behaviors in one space doesn't mean that it will translate to another space.

We keep posting about Puppy Day School, but what do we do in PDS that is so important to get your pup off on the right paw? Well, let's talk about it.

This is a video about socialization in Puppy Day School. Socialization is not just dog to dog or dog to human, dogs need to be socialized in different environments to different sounds, sights, and surfaces.

In the first clips you can see Zelda, she was initially leery of the owl puppet, but with some time and some yummy treats she discovered that it isn't so scary. She gained some confidence around the objects, didn't really react to the umbrella, and even climbed on the Bosu ball! All of this was done while practicing some of her basic cues.

Zoey, the goldendoodle, is a PDS grad and is back with us for a couple of weeks to work on her recall. Zoey is used to the objects because we worked with her when she was a young puppy to socialize her around them. Now we are working on proofing her recall, you can see that she comes when called and even blows right past all of the fun stuff we have set out for her. Always remember: you need to practice your training here, there, and everywhere.

Of course, when appropriate, we do have puppy play time for socialization; Winston and Zelda demonstrate that at the end of the video.

Meet Gracie!

Gracie is a Day Training Alumni. Her mom brought her in for a drop in day of training and we are all having a great time. Some of her favorite parts of the day: playing ball, ALLLLLLLLLLLLL of the pets, and getting to be Kelly's office dog. Come back any time, Gracie, we love having you here.

Lunch time at Puppy Day School! ๐Ÿ”ˆon for extra cute puppy snortles!

Puppy Day School school lunch looks a little different that a square pizza and carton of milk. We serve our students their own kibble (with some extra Cheerios or treats sometimes) in puzzle toys. We have several puzzle toys of varying difficulties to challenge your fur babies' little brains.

Mental stimulation is essential for your dogโ€™s overall wellbeing as it reduces stress, builds confidence, and relieves anxiety. When dogs donโ€™t get enough mental stimulation they may fall into bad habits such as barking or chewing things they shouldnโ€™t.

Their mornings are filled with handling skills, manners skills, and object/sound socialization. They get to wind down with a puzzle toy school lunch then it is nap time.

Have a puppy you need some help training or socializing? We have plenty of openings in our Puppy Day School. Enroll here: https://bit.ly/3AH9PZS
