TTT Walking demo
๐ TRAINING TIP TUESDAY ๐
Katelyn is a new staff member here at FDTC. For her training we had her work with Glacier (a PDS alumni), who was in Day Training for leash pulling. Let's go over all of the training elements in this video:
Proper equipment- we got Glacier on a 2 Hounds No Pull Harness and this started to help
Rate of reward- it may look like Katelyn is feeding him way too many treats, but this is the rate at which you should be rewarding your dog when they are learning.
Check-ins- Glacier is free to look around while on a walk, but he frequently does an unprompted check in with Katelyn to get feedback and make sure he is doing what she has asked (which means he also gets a treat).
Loose leash- there is not tension on the leash, he isn't pulling Katelyn, the leash hangs in a nice U shape between the 2.
Directional changes- When Glacier gets going a little too much Katelyn gently changes directions and lures Glacier with her which returns him to a nice loose leash position.
Distraction- Mr. Big Stuff is hanging out in the parking lot, Glacier looks to check him out, but quickly goes back in for a check-in with Katelyn.
You, too, can do leash work like Glacier and Katelyn. We have a Leash Work Book Camp coming up as well as plenty of spots in Day Training.

Training Tip Tuesday - Feedback
๐ TRAINING TIP TUESDAY ๐
Today we will be talking about feedback and giving exciting feedback to your dog. Timing is everything, imagine you have 2 seconds to tell your dog they are doing it right. Humans are great at pointing out mistakes, but slow to praise when things are done well. The more praise the quicker your dog learns.
Would you really listen to feedback from Ben Stein? The teacher from Peanuts? No. You need to be exciting when you are giving your dog feedback. Put a little pep in your feedback (not too much, we aren't having a party).

TTT - Treats
New Series!!! ๐ TRAINING TIP TUESDAY ๐
Let's talk treats. You need to be paying your dog. Start your training with high value treats, we can fade them away later. Watch this video to learn how we prepare treats.
PRO TIP: Mix your hot dog and string cheese with your dog's kibble to make high volume high value treats.
Stay tuned for next week! You never know which staff member might pop up to teach you something new.
What training tips would you like to see us cover?

PDS Object Socialization
We keep posting about Puppy Day School, but what do we do in PDS that is so important to get your pup off on the right paw? Well, let's talk about it.
This is a video about socialization in Puppy Day School. Socialization is not just dog to dog or dog to human, dogs need to be socialized in different environments to different sounds, sights, and surfaces.
In the first clips you can see Zelda, she was initially leery of the owl puppet, but with some time and some yummy treats she discovered that it isn't so scary. She gained some confidence around the objects, didn't really react to the umbrella, and even climbed on the Bosu ball! All of this was done while practicing some of her basic cues.
Zoey, the goldendoodle, is a PDS grad and is back with us for a couple of weeks to work on her recall. Zoey is used to the objects because we worked with her when she was a young puppy to socialize her around them. Now we are working on proofing her recall, you can see that she comes when called and even blows right past all of the fun stuff we have set out for her. Always remember: you need to practice your training here, there, and everywhere.
Of course, when appropriate, we do have puppy play time for socialization; Winston and Zelda demonstrate that at the end of the video.

Lunch time at Puppy Day School!
Lunch time at Puppy Day School! ๐on for extra cute puppy snortles!
Puppy Day School school lunch looks a little different that a square pizza and carton of milk. We serve our students their own kibble (with some extra Cheerios or treats sometimes) in puzzle toys. We have several puzzle toys of varying difficulties to challenge your fur babies' little brains.
Mental stimulation is essential for your dogโs overall wellbeing as it reduces stress, builds confidence, and relieves anxiety. When dogs donโt get enough mental stimulation they may fall into bad habits such as barking or chewing things they shouldnโt.
Their mornings are filled with handling skills, manners skills, and object/sound socialization. They get to wind down with a puzzle toy school lunch then it is nap time.

Ball pit
We recently had a ball pit donated to us, we would say Beanie approves.
A ball pit or puzzle toy is a great way for you dog to get physical and mental exercise when the weather is too cold or too hot for them to be outside.
Throw kibble or treats in the ball pit and let your dog find them. For a homemade puzzle put kibble or treats on a flat towel and roll or scrunch it up- you can even tie it in a knot for more of a challenge; please supervise your dog with a towel puzzle.
