We sure did have a wonderful CATurday with Reeses! She came in today for her annual visit. 🩺 💉

Did you know Calicos are known for their tri-colored coats made of 25-75% white with large patches of orange and black. This pattern is a genetic mutation that affects two X chromosomes, therefore making male calico cats extremely rare. Male calico cats are born 1 in every 3,000 calico births 😱. This pattern does not affect the cats at all, it just makes them more beautiful 😻.

Dental disease is commonly seen in exotic pets. Unlike dogs and cats, the signs can vary species to species, and they can be subtle. If left untreated, it can cause discomfort and severe health issues.

For this reason, regular dental checks are recommended for rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets and bearded dragons.

Meet Sully, he has broken bottom incisors and inflammation surrounding them. He is also a very silly boy. For Sully a Comprehensive Oral Health Assessment under general anesthesia is recommended to address his incisors and get this guy more comfortable.

Dental disease starts with gum disease. The plaque (bacteria) or tartar that sits on your pets teeth causes gum disease by accumulating on the tooth. As the amount of plaque grows under the gumline, bacterial waste products accumulate and starts causing damage to the surrounding tissue. Your pets own response to inflammation of the damaged tissue and bacterial infection causes tissue breakdown and loss of the tooth’s supporting tissues as well.

🐈Resorptive lesions in a cat 🐈‍⬛
Tooth resorption is a progressive, potentially painful disease that affects many species. It commonly affects up to 60% of cats 5 yrs and older. The cause of tooth resorption is unknown, what we do know is tooth resorption is not always seen on the crown of the tooth (the portion of the tooth that you can see) therefore, we would need to diagnose with full mouth x-rays. Tooth resorption is when the dentin of a single tooth is severely eroded and eventually becomes irreparably destroyed. Over time, all areas of an affected tooth, from root to crown, may become involved. A pet may clearly indicate that they are experiencing excruciating pain when it bites down on an affected tooth or if the tooth is touch. Common signs are drooling, decreased appetite, picking up food and dropping it, needing to switch food from dry kibble to soft food, tilting the head the chew, swallowing without chewing, and more.
