In accordance with recommendations from the American Heartworm Society, we require annual heartworm tests for all dogs over 6 months of age who need preventative prescribed regardless of how long they have been on preventatives. Heartworm tests look for presence of adult heartworms by looking for antigen released by the adult in the blood stream. This test is usually run in clinic, takes a very small amount of blood (3 drops!), and is done within about 10 minutes. Timing with heartworm tests is very important as it takes 6-7 months from point of infection with microfiliaria (via mosquito bite) until an adult heartworm is formed.
Sometimes, we can see microfilaria on the microscope! The video was made in clinic and shows microfilaria moving through a blood smear under magnification.

Have you seen our collection? There are 40 fleas hanging from our ceiling to represent the number of fleas a SINGLE adult female flea can lay in ONE day! Donβt let your home become a breeding ground, ask us how to protect your pet!
π± This is just one reason we recommend year around flea and tick preventatives! Stay tuned for more reasons throughout the month! #tickseason

Please make any medication requests needed this week if possible. Especially if your dog will be needing any anxiety medication for the upcoming Fourth of July Holiday! Urgent appointment requests will be referred to near by veterinary clinics and all emergencies will be referred to the Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Hospital. Thank you in advance for understanding <3 <3 <3
