The BuddyRest story started 48 dog years ago, with a routine visit to the vet. They warned me that Buddy was going to suffer from stiff, painful joints and live a shorter life than other dogs. I was told that big dogs like Buddy live on average 4 years less than smaller dogs - frequently due to conditions such as arthritis and joint problems.
The Vet told me he often saw dogs of all ages with these problems - painful swollen joints, arthritis, lameness, and general loss of mobility. Veterinarians have all types of treatments from pain medication to laser treatments and even stem cell therapy. However, the ironic thing is often times, after all that treatment, those same dogs go home and end up sleeping on the tile floor.
As chance would have it, I was working in the mattress industry at the time and I knew how important support was to the body. I had seen it first hand how a pressure-free support had changed the lives of numerous people.
The Search for a Better Dog Bed
It was obvious to me that Buddy needed a better bed. The standard dog bed he was sleeping on just didn't support his body well enough. So, I set out to find him one.
That's where things got difficult.
As hard as I looked, I just couldn't find a dog bed that had the support like a human mattress. I saw a lot of cheap egg crate "orthopedic" beds that I knew were anything but supportive.
Unwilling to settle for second best, I decided to use my expertise to design a dog bed that ticked all the boxes. It was that moment I decided to do something for Buddy and the millions of dogs out there destined to suffer the same fate.
