We are thrilled to announce the birth of a healthy African elephant calf, a male, born to mother Talia on April 10. Both mother and baby are doing well, under the attentive watch of the Zoo’s veterinary and elephant care teams.

His name is Bomani, which means “warrior” in Swahili.

Bomani is already showing signs of curiosity and energy, standing up within his first few minutes of life and exploring his surroundings under the watchful eye of mom and other members of the herd. They will remain behind the scenes for a while to allow for the observation of bonding, nursing, and positive herd behavior.

Lucky Zoo guests may be able to catch a glimpse of him this weekend as he moves about his new space behind the Elephant Boma.

We know you’ve been waiting for an update, and we’re thrilled to share that Mahale and Kyansa continue to thrive while bonding behind the scenes. Kyansa has been nursing beautifully, and Mahale is recovering well. 🧡

Exciting birth announcement - but not the one you're expecting! Yesterday, April 7, chimpanzee Mahale welcomed a healthy baby girl, via a planned C-section.

Just over two years ago, you shared our excitement as we watched Mahale reuniting with Kucheza following his emergency C-section birth. Fans, both new and old, joined us on the journey of mom and son until Kucheza passed away due to an accidental injury at just five weeks old.

Now, we are thrilled to share the news that after a healthy pregnancy, Mahale has successfully delivered another baby – and this time it’s a girl! 🎉 The baby was named Kyansa (key-AHN-sah), after a peak in the Mahale Mountains National Park in Tanzania.

Because she had previously delivered an infant via C-section, another surgical delivery was prescribed to reduce the risks sometimes associated with natural births after C-sections. Once again, Drs. Laura Whisler and Janna Chibry of College Hill OB-GYN performed the cesarean section alongside our veterinary and animal care teams.

Mahale spent the night recovering and was able to be reunited with baby this morning – just 14 hours after delivery. Positive signs of bonding have been immediately visible through constant observation by their caretakers. The pair will remain behind the scenes to allow time for Mahale to heal from surgery and for mom and baby to develop their bond.

This is the fourth offspring for Mahale, and an important birth for the chimpanzee population.

Follow us to watch their story unfold. We can’t wait to take you on this journey with us. 🧡

Wondering about the smoking coming from the Zoo? 🔥 Today, we're working with the Sedgwick County Fire District 1 to conduct prescribed fires to burn overgrowth and weeds.

These controlled fires benefit grassland birds by mimicking natural wildfires, promoting healthy plant growth, controlling invasive species, AND improving habitat for these birds and other wildlife.

🕊️Grassland birds are the fastest declining bird populations in North America. According to the American Bird Conservancy, there are 3 billion fewer birds in the United States and Canada today than there were in 1970, with a 53-percent reduction in grassland birds alone.

We hope you have an otterly amazing day! 🦦

Did you know that the North American river otter can remain underwater for up to 8 minutes? Their ears and nose close automatically when diving, enhancing their semi-acquatic lifestyle.

Two weeks have passed since the loss of our first elephant calf, and we’re happy to share that Simunye and the rest of the herd are doing well. 🐘 Their strong bonds remain evident as the herd adjusts to the loss of Malaika.

Talia and Xolani both continue to be closely monitored through bloodwork and ultrasounds as they approach their due dates. While neither are showing signs that birth is impending just yet, that could change at any moment!

We appreciate your support as we continue to care for them and look forward to sharing more updates as things progress! 🧡

With profound sadness, the Sedgwick County Zoo announces that 29-year-old African elephant Simunye, has delivered a stillborn calf following a healthy, full-term pregnancy. The Zoo community, staff, and elephant herd alike are mourning this devastating loss. This would have marked the first elephant born at Sedgwick County Zoo in its 54-year history.

The monumental journey of Simunye's 22-month pregnancy ended in heartbreak on Friday, March 14, despite the expert care provided by the elephant care and veterinary teams. Regular prenatal exams and behavioral observations indicated that both mom and calf were healthy with no sign of complications throughout the entire gestational term.

Simunye began showing signs of active labor early Thursday morning while the care team watched remotely to allow for the most natural birthing environment. She delivered her calf Friday afternoon and despite her best attempts to assist, it showed no signs of movement. Other members of the herd surrounded Simunye throughout labor, and continued to provide support throughout the night as they grieved the loss together.

The calf, a female, was named Malaika, which means “angel” in Swahili.
