When fire crews entered a smoke-filled apartment, they expected to find flames and damage, not a tiny dog fighting for his life. During the search, firefighter Andrew Klein spotted Nalu, a small Bichon Frise and Shih Tzu mix, lying lifeless on the floor.

The heat and smoke had overwhelmed him, and Klein could feel his dead weight in his arms as he carried him outside. Without hesitation, he dropped to his knees and began CPR, giving mouth-to-snout breaths and steady compressions. Minutes passed, then more minutes, until nearly twenty had gone by. Slowly, Nalu started to respond.

Fire crews placed a pet oxygen mask over his muzzle, helping him stabilize enough to be taken for care. Nalu’s owner, Crystal Lamirande, had arrived home just moments earlier and had been unable to get inside because of the heavy smoke. She watched the rescue unfold, hoping for any sign that her dog would survive.

In the days that followed, Nalu recovered fully, and on a visit to the fire station, he met the firefighter who refused to give up.
