If you didn’t get a chance to meet Snoopy last night at our event, here is a little more about this pup! Please contact K9 Konnection if you would like to meet him.

Snoopy here or Snoopman, I’m about 4 years old and possible mini Heeler heritage. I’m a bit shy at first, have had some training, get along with all humans, pooches and most likely cats. Come meet me by calling 928-232-2611 ❤️🐶❤️

Just a friendly reminder from the equine tooth fairy to get their teeth checked and floated. Dr. Scott and Megan helped Ginger, a fabulous pony, today and her two legged family was very engaged in the procedure. Good job Ginger 🐴 🦷

We hope you had as great a Tuesday as Harvey! Harvey came to see us with a rocking mohawk and a smile.

Harvey wants all his canine and feline friends of the community to know vaccinations are an important part of preventative health. Harvey did great for his vaccine appointment today and we wish him the best 🐾

Good morning, Wickenburg and surrounding areas. For this Saturday morning, we thought we’d change it up and share a story in more of a blog format. Join Dr. Lovell as she shares a great case with you all.

Hi y’all! I know I’ve met so many of you, but if you haven’t met me before I’m Dr. Jordan Lovell. I graduated from Colorado State University last year with my veterinary degree and I’m originally from Texas. I wanted to share an important lesson with you that I recently learned as a veterinarian. As a new graduate veterinarian, one of the hardest aspects of the job is seeing cases that you’ve never seen before. Last week, I was presented with a young, otherwise healthy Australian Shepherd with acute onset blindness. Now I’ve seen many blind dogs, but I knew this case was different. This was a healthy, young dog and my mind immediately went to intoxications. I asked Dr. Ruisi, my fearless mentor, for some guidance on this case. She encouraged me to ask a more detailed history about ivermectin use in the horses at the property. Turns out two horses on the property were dewormed the day before with regular equine ivermectin dewormer. This dog had eaten the horse manure or dropped dewormer from the mouth and poisoned itself with ivermectin horse dewormer.

Of course your next question is, don’t we give ivermectin to dogs in other products? The answer is yes, but at much lower doses. The other critical piece of this case is the breed of this dog. White footed dogs like Australian shepherds, Collies, and other herding breeds have a known genetic mutation that makes some dogs within the breed more susceptible to the effects of high levels of ivermectin. In the veterinary world, we call that receptor mutation MDR1. Keep in mind, not all Aussies or Collies will carry this mutation, only some. Ivermectin is still a very safe and effective drug when used properly.

Fortunately, this dog did wonderfully after a day of hospitalization on lipids, which help bind the ivermectin for excretion outside the body.

Reflecting back on this case, I know I learned the signs of ivermectin toxicity and how to treat it. I hope my story gives you a glimpse into the day as a young veterinarian knowing we never can predict the types of cases we see.

For horse owners, I would encourage you to keep manure picked up at your property, especially around the time of deworming. Also, do not let your pups eat dewormer dropped from the horse’s mouth. Enjoy your Saturday

For case Friday, we decided to add some color 🎨 to the day!

Let’s talk about cytology… you might ask what we are looking at when we take a sample from your animal and look at it under the microscope. Here are a few examples of what we see!

Cytology (looking at cells under the microscope) can be very helpful when looking at masses, parasites, ears or even skin! These findings help us with diagnoses and treatment for your animals. Check out the beautiful images captured with an iPhone through our microscope.

We want your equine partners thriving into their ✨ golden ✨years

It’s not uncommon to find horses and ponies living well into their 20s and 30s, thanks to continuous advances in nutrition and health care.

Horse owners have a big impact as well and can help their horses thrive in their golden years through proper management practices like those illustrated in the graphic. But remember, although there is much you can do on your own to keep your older horse happy and spry, some conditions associated with aging require medical intervention.

Scheduling regular visits and keeping a good line of communication with your veterinarian will allow you to respond quickly to any ailments or injuries that could cause your horse a serious or prolonged set back. That means less worry for you, and a better quality of life for your old friend!

Friday funday! That also means it’s Case Friday! The spotlight is on our equine patient, Nitro.

Pic 1: initial presentation of an acute forehead laceration

Pic 2: immediately after sutures placed

Pic 3: 2 weeks later after suture removal

We love how well head lacerations heal. The skin and tissue along the head is very well vascularized which means the injuries bleed but do heal quite well with veterinary care. Go Nitro!!

Dog or horse???

One of our favorite patients, Bodhi the Newfoundland, visited us today! There was some confusion as to which department should see him today and he ended up in our equine stocks. We adore Bodhi and appreciate the laughs and joy he brings our staff.
